Zane Khan Retires At 23

Former top American junior Zane Khan has retired from tennis at age 23. His best ranking was 404 in the world in singles back in 2021.

Khan was hampered by perpetual foot problems since juniors. He was sponsored by Nike but had difficulty finding shoes that were sufficiently comfortable to play in. One year at Eddie Herr Championships at IMG Academy in Bradenton, I saw Khan playing singles with worn out older hard court Nike shoes on Har-Tru clay courts in the 18s because they were the “only shoes that didn’t hurt his feet.”

Khan made his ATP debut at 2020 European Open in Antwerp, Belgium playing doubles with Luca Nardi (lost to Geerts and Mertens 46 67 in main draw) and singles qualies, a 67 26 loss to then world no. 90 Lloyd Harris. His final ATP match was at 2021 US Open in the third round of qualifying, a 36 75 67 (4) loss to Evgeny Donskoy (after defeating Sergey Stakhovskiy and Damir Dzumhur). During that epic marathon with Donskoy, Khan suffered a foot injury that would sideline him for four years.

Earlier this year Khan finally made his way back to the lower level of the pro circuit, competing at the Battle of Boca events in Boca Raton, FL, winning two titles and losing in the final of the third one. This week Khan decided to end his playing dreams and he announced on social media that he is currently coaching in the South Florida, Boca Raton area where he grew up.

He earned just over $72,000 in prize money in his short pro career.

I actually helped Khan get a wildcard into the main draw of Tallahassee Open in 2020, where he lost first round to Martin Cuevas 36 02 ret. with a stiff neck from sleeping in the car during the drive from Boca to Tallahassee.

At Sarasota Open where Khan lost to Daniel Elahi Galan, his coach, a friend, asked me if I could help the get a wildcard into Tallahassee the next week. And one phone call to the tournament director Karen Vogter actually did the trick. I have known Khan and his uncle/coach Sharif since seeing him win Eddie Herr 12s.

There was another player named Faris Khan who used to play for Duke. Are the two related by any chance?

  • Scoop Malinowski · October 14, 2025 at 8:55 am

Yes they are twin brothers Sam, Faris finished at Duke and works in the money markets in NYC.

Oh, interesting. Identical or fraternal twins?

Identical but seeing them both play at Eddie Herr 12s it was clear Zane is the alpha twin. But who knows maybe that changed?

Or maybe Faris is more “alpha” at other parts of life.

Two brothers pushed hard into the sport, not a wealthy family, they did great for a while but it got tougher and tougher as they got better and older. Money pressures a factor too.
