Wimbledon Heats Up

Emma Raducanu had set point on world no. 1 Aryna Sabalenka but ultimately lost 67 46. But it was the finest tennis we’ve seen from the former US Open queen and perhaps it was an even higher level of all around performance than five years ago when she conquered US Open and Leylah Fernandez in the final.

One of the biggest surprises so far at Wimbledon, aside from the rampages through the draw by Marin Cilic, Nico Jarry (ranked 143), August Holmgren, Jaume Munar and Kamil Majchrzak (109) was coach Goran Ivanisevic’s verbal humiliation of his player Stefanos Tsitsipas. “He wants, but he doesn’t do anything. All ‘I want, I want’, but I don’t see that progress. I was shocked. I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I am three times more fit than him. This is really bad. It’s simple and it’s not simple. I’ve talked to him a lot of times. If he solves some things outside of tennis, then he has a chance and he’ll return to where he belongs, because he’s too good a player to be out of the top 10.”

There is no way Goran and Tsitsipas will stay together for another tournament after this public verbal humiliation. Tsitsipas is a broken player at rockbottom. And Goran kicked him when he is down.

Alcaraz on facing Rublev next: “I think he’s a really powerful player. I think he plays really well on grass. He always loves to be aggressive. When he finds his forehand, I think he likes to move his opponent from side to side. It’s gonna be really difficult because on grass, the movement is the most difficult thing to do. I think we are really similar that we always like to find our forehand. Doesn’t matter if it’s inside out on the forehand side. Always try to play aggressively. He has a big serve as well. It’s gonna be a really interesting one to be honest. Facing Rublev in the 4th round, I think it’s gonna be a really big challenge. I’m ready to take that challenge. We’ve played big matches already. I’m happy to face him once again. First on grass. I’ll go for it.”

Portuguese players Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral were given permission to alter the AELTC all-white dress code to pay tribute to soccer star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who died this week in a tragic car crash. They will wear black ribbons on their shoulders/hats.

Palestine Solidarity Campaign protested outside The Championships to demand that Wimbledon tournament sponsor Barclays, to stop bankrolling Israel’s genocide and apartheid against Palestinians.

Tennis fan complaining about Wimbledon queue: “I hate it. It is a horrible way to make tennis fans feel inferior, poor, frustrated, tired, angry and sleep-deprived… Many people who are young, old, sick, disabled can’t queue Also – able-bodied adults who have jobs or children. I couldn’t queue overnight because I have kids to look after and take to school. Why not just let us buy tickets on websites?”

Goran likes Novak’s chances at Wimbledon and US Open: “This is not Novak’s last chance — he has a shot at the US Open too. In Melbourne this year — if he hadn’t gotten injured, no way Zverev beats him, and the final with Sinner would have been interesting. He’s the best grass-court player, experienced, he knows exactly what it takes here.”

August Holmgren, the 27 year old from Denmark who had never won a Grand Slam main draw match before Wimbledon, wears the attire of a brand called Quiet Please, which consists of a monkey in it’s logo. Holmgren will play Alex deMinaur in third round. Holmgren played for San Diego State University.

Naomi Osaka lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 63 46 46: Prakash Amritraj: “She seems lost.”… Lindsay Davenport: “She’s gotta figure out, is this really what she wants to be doing out here.”…

Speaking of heating up, it’s supposed to be unusually warm in London this week. 🔥

Yeah, it’s interesting that Ivanisevic just let it all hang out about Tsitsipas. I guess he has no interest in keeping his current job. 😉

Actually, the more you think about it, Ivanisevic probably sees the writing on the wall and is just doing damage control at this point. ☢️

Sam, Tsitisipas has made like $50m from tennis but it feels like he’s a broken player But he’s had a fantastic career in the toughest era ever. He’d have four Grand Slams in the Pete Andre era.

Sam, yes it looks like Goran fired Tsitsipas actually. Doesn’t want to be involved with a sinking ship.

An MMA fighter told me athletic peak in males is 27 years old. Tsitsipas is 26 and can still turn it around if he takes Goran’s words to heart. Embrace the Aero 98 tell Pops to hang back and look after the Greek properties and decide towant it as badly as Norrie or Cobolli or Brooksby or Fritz.

Every person has different unique peak. Not one size fits all.

Scoop, maybe Tsitsipas can share some of his fortune with Andre and Steffi. 😉

Scoop, glad that Ivanisevic has the foresight to grab a life raft and get off the Titanic.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 14, 2025 at 7:40 am

That would be a good coaching option for Tsitsipas who appears to be washed up.

  • Sam · July 21, 2025 at 11:58 pm

Yeah, staying on a sinking ship does have the ability to make one “washed up.” 💦 😏

And speaking of Andre and Steffi, I guess now we know why, when that rando proposed to her during one of her matches, she replied: “How much money have you got???” 😂

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 22, 2025 at 8:26 am

Yes that was one of Steffi’s rare unscripted moments. I guess she thought that was funny.

  • Sam · July 29, 2025 at 3:12 am

In case they’re really running low on funds, I hope Steffi never tries her hand at stand-up comedy, because the joke will be on her. 😏

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 29, 2025 at 10:26 am

Sam I don’t see Graf having any hope of doing comedy, perhaps as a coach. But Spadea said in his book when he visited them in Vegas all she said to him was stay positive Vince stay positive.
