Wimbledon begins

wimbThe highpoint of the tennis season is here. It looks like Novak and Andy are on a collision course but you can never count out Roger Federer who is especially hungry and eager right now because this could very well be his last chance to win a major title. There are some fine first round battles – I like the Fritz vs Wawrinka showdown and Karlovic vs Coric and Isner vs Baghdatis as well as Gulbis vs Sock. How Kyrgios and Thiem and Raonic progress will be fun to follow. Thiem has his hands full in the first round with Flo Mayer. On the ladies side it’s hard to see anything but Serena vs Garbine or Kvitova. The world’s best tennis event has begun and it’s time to analyze and dissect the brilliant tennis we are about to observe over the next fortnight….

Here is a very good quick preview of the Big W – http://www.speedburneronsports.com/#!tennis/cktu

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 27, 2016 at 10:59 am

Karlovic straight sets Coric – 37 year old Dr Ivo still a lethal force on the ATP Tour. Querrey is locked in a marathon battle with Rosol 7-7 in the fifth. Q Ball really needs this. He has lost a lot of close ones like this in majors over the years. Needs this win badly.

  • jg · June 27, 2016 at 11:30 am

wow, Q ball won, you know he didn’t want to go out early, you would have thought he would cave after being down 2 sets early–he really needed it. Hopefully he can follow it up and not be content with a come from behind win.

  • Dan markowitz · June 27, 2016 at 1:09 pm

This Murguruza-Giorgi match is fun. Both players really bat the ball. Chris Every doing commentary for ESPN said Giorgio hits too many line drives that she doesn’t have enough shape on the ball. But the pro teaching my son now, Eric Scharf, had match points against Kristen Pless, when he was top 50, said people get trajectory and spin confused. He said you actually want to hit line drives–think about hitting through three balls in a row–and only shape the ball at the very end of stroke. That’s what Spadea says too actually.

Shiloh breaks Laver record of 28 straight slam wins. Samantha Crawford won a match. She seemed like she was.going to be a lioness killer in Brisbane.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 27, 2016 at 2:22 pm

Rosol is not an easy guy to beat on grass jg as we all know what he did to Rafa a few years back – HUGE win for Q Ball and he should handle his business in the second round –

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 27, 2016 at 2:26 pm

Giorgi plays like a prime Pierce but she has a better athleticism but not the height reach and leverage – I’d like to see Spadea coach Giorgi – Federer looking okay so far – barely ekes out the first set by Pella who has stepped up in the last year – Pella looks like a potential top 30 player – Just looks like he belongs and is a natural fit for the big stage –

  • Thomas Tung · June 27, 2016 at 9:44 pm

Only one I can think of who plays more aggressively than Giorgi in today’s game is Aravane Rezai (where has she gone?). I like Camila’s fearless game, but, given her usual court positioning, she commits too aggressively and can’t deal with safety shots all that well (just attempts to flail away at it) — somewhat like a certain young A. Agassi in that regard. Maybe Gilbert can work with her? Then again, given what I have heard about her father, that might not be a good fit.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 27, 2016 at 9:52 pm

Aravane Rezai – wow – now that is a player who totally disappeared – I did a Biofile with her in Key Biscayne about four years ago and she was so nice but she just vanished – I’d guess it was injuries – Pmac tried to coach Giorgi and so did Cahill according to my South FL source – but the father does not want any long term commitments – and from all I hear Sergio Giorgi is a decent coach for his daughter but not equipped to take her to the elite level where she does seem to have the potential to be – He is too tense and some of his decisions for training and practicing are highly unusual and questionable –

  • Thomas Tung · June 27, 2016 at 10:04 pm

Scoop, I’ve heard the same, and also that the big words with Sergio are “control freak”, followed VERY closely by “greenbacks”.

Then again, I’m surprised (maybe I shouldn’t be) that Giorgi neglects/ignores some very basic safety plays in tennis. It’s as if Bollettieri & Co. ignored that part (a very big part in sustaining aggressive play) of the tennis handbook. But, admittedly, it’s not like Nick was teaching Andre how to play good defense back in his late-80s/early-90s “rebel years” …

I personally think that Nick had a “nostalgia attack” when he saw Giorgi; after all he proclaimed her the “female Andre Agassi”.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 28, 2016 at 8:48 am

Andrei Kozlov is sub coach for Giorgi and he says Sergio Giorgi pays cash on the spot based on her results in the tourney that he works – so he pays but just does not want anything long term – Kyrgios vs Step is a great battle here – They first played three years ago at Roland Garros and Kristos Kyrgios told me Nick won the first two sets on the clay and Step tried to bully Nick on a changeover with an intentional bump but Nick wasn’t bothered and finished it – Step just won the third set tiebreaker and now they are into the fourth –

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 28, 2016 at 2:04 pm

Nice to see Dimitrov win again finally boy did he need that – Willis is the story of the tourney though –

  • jg · June 28, 2016 at 2:18 pm

check out the You Tube of Willis playing Sandgren at the Knoxville Challenger, he takes out a RC Cola and Candy bar during change over, have to love it, the announcers amazement is hilarious. That said he does have a crafty game on grass.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 28, 2016 at 3:09 pm

Could Willis vs Federer be the next Bastl vs Sampras?

  • jg · June 28, 2016 at 3:16 pm

didn’t Becker lose to a low ranked Brit?

  • Ryan Balon · June 28, 2016 at 10:21 pm

No he lost to Neville Godwin

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 29, 2016 at 8:43 am

Didn’t Becker retire South African Godwin because of an injury in middle of match (knee)? Roddick losing to Lu was a shocker too –

  • Ryan Balon · June 29, 2016 at 10:11 am

Yes Becker did retire thought it was his wrist though

How about Agassi losing to Doug Flach

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 29, 2016 at 12:42 pm

Ryan you are right it was the wrist – but I was watching that match and Godwin was playing really well up to the point of stoppage – Loving this Willis guy he is the happiest guy I ever saw on a pro tennis court – never saw a player smile so much before the match even started – Hope Willis gets a bunch of WCs the rest of the year he is a star player now – incredible achievement by Willis to get to this point of playing Fed on Center court – and he’s doing well despite first set bagel he was in just about every game –

  • jg · June 29, 2016 at 1:48 pm

they should give him a wild card to Newport, at least to qualies–he can play on grass. He’ll get killed on the hard courts.

  • Dan markowitz · June 29, 2016 at 2:38 pm

Are they really having a Bencic-Pironkova match on Centte Court!?? Please…Pironkova played only 16 per cent of her shots in the first set inside the service line on grass. I mean it’s a joke.

Just got back from playing on grass at Newport. Now that’s a real grass court. Ball stays low and can zip on you. With a good slice serve you can make hay. Expensive. Each of us paid $150 apiece, $600 total for 3 hours total court time, but we could stay on after the 1.5 hrs was up each session. The courts were busy. They even had juniors out there which is a great idea because movement and balance are a developed skill on grass.

  • Dan markowitz · June 29, 2016 at 2:42 pm

I’ve lost a lot of respect for Billie Jean saying Serena shouldn’t take a Battle of the Sexes match w Johnny Mac because she’d have everything to lose and nothing to gain. What a hypocrite while she jumped at chance to take Riggs match and Riggs was a shadow of Johnny Mac.

Shame on Serena if she doesn’t take match and drill him on any surface.

  • catherine bell · June 29, 2016 at 2:49 pm

Tell me what’s the point of Serena playing Mac or any other male player ?

    So yesterday.

And BJK played Riggs basically to shut him up after Margaret Court had failed to do the job.
She won, but she did not actually enjoy the experience, whatever her memory tells her now.

  • Dan Markowitz · June 29, 2016 at 4:52 pm

    Catherine,

BJK got more fame and probably fortune from winning that match (and now they’re even doing a movie on it. And we all know there have not been basically any big-budget, Hollywood movies on tennis so it’s a big deal)than she did by winning any other match or slam titles in her playing career.

So tennis is waning as a sport. ESPN didn’t even broadcast the French Open in the U.S. Why not do something for the sport that has made her so famous and enriched her greatly? Why not have a match where a great deal of the tv money and gate draw goes to the winner’s favorite charity. Why not take part in a match that could fill Madison Square Garden or even Arthur Ashe Stadium? Why not make tennis for once the sport that all the world’s eyeballs are on?

Because I remember well the Riggs-BJK match and it was on national tv and it was a big deal, bigger than any slam finals match in the 1970’s I’d imagine. It filled the Houston Astrodome.

What has Serena got to lose? Are you telling me she doesn’t have confidence in the fact she can beat a 57-year-old guy when she came two matches away from winning a Grand Slam last year?

I’ll give you another two main reasons to take the match (because you know Johnny Mac will do it): Do it for competitive fire (wasn’t it Serena and Venus when they were like 20 and 21 fascinated with taking down the no. 100 player in the world? Are you saying now Serena doesn’t think she can beat a guy who would be bageled easily by the no. 100 player in the world?

Do it for the women’s game which is hobbling now with no young players emerging with the exception of Murguruza and Keys to a lesser degree. Show the world that women can play the game at a high level by beating the best 55+ male player in the game.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 29, 2016 at 5:02 pm

jg: the thing is there are a lot of younger more worthy and deserving players who should get wildcards like Kozlov and Tiafoe and even Spadea 🙂 But yes after what Willis has accomplished this month I think he now has a substantial fanbase and a lot of tennis fans want to see him again at the ATP level.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 29, 2016 at 5:05 pm

Fully agree Dan. Riggs took the risk and gave BJK the chance now Serena should also show bravery like Riggs and lay it on the line. Why can’t Serena have the same bravery and courage to take a big risk that Riggs did? Men and women are equal now right? Equality in risk taking. Come on Serena and BJK, show the sport respect. A lot of fans want to see this match and another edition of Battle of the Sexes.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 29, 2016 at 5:09 pm

Dan, it seems Serena and BJK KNOW Serena will lose badly to Johnny Mac. If they were truly confident they would say “Bring it on John.” Funny how all the sudden BJK has cold feet towards the idea of a new “Battle of the Sexes” – a platform which elevated her popularity and status considerably. Beating John McEnroe would also do the same for Serena and it would surely be a nice part of her overall legacy.

  • jg · June 29, 2016 at 5:20 pm

    Willis would play Serena

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 29, 2016 at 7:40 pm

Would love to see Willis get that gig 🙂

  • Jg · June 29, 2016 at 7:50 pm

I actually think Willis would have given some of the US players fits on the grass courts, not Kudla or Ram, but Sock, Q ball etc, on a hard court no, but on a grass court I would take Willis, even Federer said it wasn’t easy. It’s like playing a good “pusher”, it gets to your head.

  • catherine bell · June 30, 2016 at 6:11 am

    Dan/Scoop

What I’m saying is that the King/riggs match was at a certain time in the culture which was unique and can’t be repeated or replicated (and yes, I was around then) and so I can’t see the point of any pale imitations in a very diffewrent social era. (Serena is perhaps a bit past her best anyway.)

And I really think the women’s game, if it’s in such poor shape, should nurture some real talent and not depend on some meaningless male/female contest for publicity.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 30, 2016 at 8:08 am

jg: Willis was in every game in the first set vs Fed but he couldn’t close – even on Fed’s serve Willis could have broken – Willis beat top 75 Berankis in straight sets – like a lot of unknown obscure players Willis is not far away from being a top 100 or 200 player – but then again it’s the old ‘so close yet so far’ situation –

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 30, 2016 at 8:12 am

Catherine: I think the Battle of the Sexes in tennis would always intrigue and captivate the public but with BJK winning that night vs Riggs they decided to take the $$$ and run – I have read there was supposed to be a rematch but BJK refused it and did not honor that part of the deal – BJK will never advocate another Battle of the Sexes because they got what they wanted and they will never give it back –

  • catherine bell · June 30, 2016 at 8:30 am

I seem to remember some odd male v female match years ago, in Las Vegas perhaps, featuring Martina N, maybe Connors, can’t recall any details.

Money was involved but it was otherwise a flop.

  • Dan Markowitz · June 30, 2016 at 9:10 am

The Connors-Navratilova match, as I recall it, was not a flop. Connors gave Martina half of each doubles alley and he only took one serve, and he still beat her. Connors was 40 and Navr was 35. The first set was very competitive as Connors broke Navr at 5-6. When Navr double-faulted to lose the set, she swung her racquet in frustration. Connors closed her out 6-2.

The stands were packed and there was a buzz to the crowd. You can see why Connors had to get bilateral hip replacements from the way he played Navr, running side to side on hard courts, skidding into shots, making quick cuts. The guy was a maniac. Navr played him tight in the first set, but even with the advantage in size of court and one serve for Jimmy, she couldn’t handle his passing shots after the first set. Watch some of the points, they’re high-quality, grueling, tactical tennis, much more interesting than the average women’s match on tour.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGRIf7e6fP0

So you can give all the reasons you like how BJK and Serena would want to bypass this match, but in my eyes, it’d be one of the biggest matches ever in tennis if it occurred, even a Venus-Johnny Mac match would be huge, and I think it’d be a boon for the game if it happened.

Remember, Johnny Mac may be 57, but you know his game, his persona, his ego (he’s the Norman Mailer, the Bill Clinton, the Donald Trump of tennis–I knew Scoop would like this reference) would make it must-see tennis for even the non-tennis or casual tennis folk. And Serena, of course, before she retires soon, is also extra-terrestrial in the world of sport and culture.

And just like Navr took on Connors–she had to know that her chances of winning were slim–at the same age Serena is now, it behooves Serena to take on the challenge. Connors was playing at a much higher level than Johnny Mac would be today and Serena’s supposed to have exceeded Martina and Steffi as the GOAT.

  • Dan Markowitz · June 30, 2016 at 9:11 am

    Serena should win…easily.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 30, 2016 at 9:18 am

Dan you said you were not going to inject politics into the tennis discussions anymore 🙂 Johnny Mac vs Serena would be absolutely HUGE – bigger than Riggs vs BJK FAR BIGGER as both Serena and John have greater public profiles than Riggs and BJK did back then and also tennis is a bigger sport now in the culture than it was back in the late 60s – Tennis would benefit greatly by a new Battle of the Sexes showdown which could possibly overshadow baseball soccer golf and all the other sports if it were to happen – BJK and Serena should not be stonewalling that aspect – Dan I think we have to interview players about this and try to get the snowball rolling –

  • Dan Markowitz · June 30, 2016 at 10:15 am

BJK-Riggs match happened in 1973. If I recall, they canceled “Happy Days” to show it live on national tv. I’ve talked to former pro, Jeff Salzenstein about this, and of last year, he thought Johnny Mac would win 2 and 2.

  • catherine bell · June 30, 2016 at 12:59 pm

Dan – thanks for clearing up my vague memory. Maybe not a flop but not a reprise of Riggs/King either.

Scoop – I have to disagree. 2016 is not 1973. As I’ve said before Riggs/King took place in another time. Really, that couldn’t happen now. Lots more things going on these days, different political atmosphere. Tennis was a big focus for women in the 70s – linked to other parts of women’s lib etc.

Serena/Mac would be a circus and people would dismiss it as such.

  • Dan Markowitz · June 30, 2016 at 5:24 pm

Is Spadea a friggin’ genius or what? He says the other day even as Thiem is winning a pre-Wimby grass event that he doesn’t like his game on grass. His back swings are too big and his serve is not powerful enough and look what happens, Thiem loses in the second round of Wimby to Jiri Vesely, in three breaker sets.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 30, 2016 at 8:42 pm

Catherine: If the media presented it as a circus the people would see it as such – if the media presented it fairly and unbiased without any agenda the public would enjoy the spectacle – presentation is the key – I see Johnny Mac vs Serena as far far more appealing and entertaining than Riggs vs BJK because both John and Serena are far far FAR more popular and colorful larger than life iconic characters –

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 30, 2016 at 8:43 pm

Vesely is a grass court nightmare Dan – Big tall lefty with big weapons and a feisty personality – not an upset at all – Just a tough luck result to lose three tiebreakers –

  • Dan Markowitz · June 30, 2016 at 9:21 pm

Not an upset! Thiem had won a Wimby warm up. Thiem’s ranked no. 8, Vesely no. 64. Vesely had won only two slam matches this year before this match and had lost first round of Aussie O to Renzo Olivio, whoever that is.

Saying it’s not an upset is like saying if QBall knocks off Djoko in the 3rd rd it’s not an upset.

  • Scoop Malinowski · June 30, 2016 at 9:50 pm

Vesely is a big tall Karlovic type dangerous guy – definitely a threat on grass – guess you can call it an upset of course but not the total shocker like Q Ball beating Djokovic would be –

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 1, 2016 at 3:07 pm

QBall is up two sets to love on Djokovic – No this is not a typo – Q Ball is playing perfect Q Ball tennis – deadly serving and steady baseline pounding – Djokovic can’t handle that serve which when it’s ON it’s the best serve ever – Proof? Querrey has the record of serving ten consecutive aces vs Blake in Indy – Pete or Goran never did that – Q Ball is serving incredibly well – Djokovic looks helpless and can barely win any points when Q is serving – Querrey is finally playing the level of tennis we all knew was inside of his lanky loosey goosey whip like body – Djokovic looks absolutely dazed and confused – no injury just bewildered by the level of tennis QBall is showing –

  • Thomas Tung · July 1, 2016 at 3:56 pm

Just as shocking is the score in the 2nd set of the Querrey – Djokovic match. 6-1. I haven’t seen that match, so I don’t know what’s happening. Novak going on mental walkabout with his return of serve?

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 1, 2016 at 6:09 pm

TT: Querrey just played perfect tennis and Djokovic was shocked at what was happening – It’s like a boxing champion expecting a trouble free title defense against a mediocre contender he doesn’t feel threatened by and then he starts getting rocked by heavy punches over and over and over and he gets dazed and confused – Djokovic tried everything but it wasn’t enough to shake Querrey – Djokovic saved the mini break in the tiebreaker but then Sam answered that challenge and continued making huge serves and big shots – Second set Djokovic just crumbled because he was in a state of shock – if it was a boxing match Querrey would have won by knockout – Querrey is that kind of player that can blast great players off the court – I saw he did it to Berdych on grandstand at US Open years ago 62 62 62 – Querrey is capable of playing that kind of devastating tennis – it’s just that he only has shown this level on very rare occasions –

  • Thomas Tung · July 2, 2016 at 12:33 am

Yeah, watching Querrey over the years, he has a great playstyle & plenty of talent, but seems content to coast in the Top 50 (soft mind). Shame — he really has all the tools to be a Top 10 guy, and moves quite well for a guy who is 6’6. Glad to see that (so far in this match) he’s been putting it all together.

  • Dan Markowitz · July 2, 2016 at 8:22 am

    Tom,

Are you serious? Qball has all the ingredients to be a top 10 player1? I don’t think so. He has a dynamic serve and forehand, but he’s not a great mover even for a big man, his backhand has always been below average and the guy has never had the mental makeup to be a great player. He has his blips, but he’s a guy who wasn’t a touted junior so I think he always feels like to be top 50 is really good.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 2, 2016 at 12:45 pm

We all wondered and speculated how Querrey would respond this year with all the young Americans coming up and Sam kind of entering ‘journeyman’ status and we got our answer today – Querrey is extra motivated now and his fire has been lit – he played top five tennis today – heck if he keeps playing like this he can win the title – surviving that five setter vs Rosol in round one was so big for Q Ball – Full credit to QBall who played incredible tennis today – it wasn’t that Djokovic had an off day it was QBall just playing at a level that Djokovic could not handle –

  • Hartt · July 2, 2016 at 3:55 pm

A lot of players will be very grateful to Querrey. Raonic just won against Sock in SS, and if he gets past Goffin, won’t be facing Novak in the QF. I think Milos has a real shot at winning Wimby this year. Probably the big test would be Murray and that does not happen until the F.
