Catherine, yes it was a wonderful win. An ex ATP player messaged me after asking if MK was fined for poor effort. Emma could go far now and that will be so great for WTA, Wimbledon and British tennis.

Tiafoe took an exceedingly long bathroom break in the middle of his loss to Cam Norrie. He grabbed extra clothes and sneakers and returned looking like he had taken a full shower, looking fresh in crisp whites and a new headband. I chuckled but it also seemed wrong to exploit this gaping rules loophole in tennis. Norrie wasn’t phased and continued to out-work the American.

Can’t see anything coming from match v Sabalenka except a learning experience for Emma which had to come sooner or later. Don’t think they’ve met before.
Emma will always be up and down but just her presence is good for British tennis – she’s an idol for kids here.

Fonseca is a natural born thriller, he inspires the big fan turnout every time and he inspires their passion and animation. Sinner on the other hand has no ability to excite and electrify fans. As I said after Miami Ope match vs Tien, every Fonseca match should be on stadium court. I heard something from an insider about Munar recently that I expect him to vault up the rankings and get some pretty big results.

Novak on Zverev: “Sasha and I have a great relationship. I like him a lot as a person. We talk quite a bit actually about tennis and different topics in life as well. We had the chance after our training session here before Wimbledon about some technical stuff on the court.. He was asking me and I was sharing with him. He knows he can always reach out to me. I understand exactly what he’s going through because I’ve been through that many times where you feel empty or less joy or less happiness playing. Where you’re not delivering the kind of results on court that you’re looking for. It’s all part of the process. You can’t always feel your best. He’s one of the players that’s been playing a lot this year in terms of his calendar. Maybe he’s just overwhelmed with so many tournaments and everything. Maybe he’s needs to take a break and refresh his mind. Him and his family know best. I empathize with him. I know mental health is a topic that hasn’t been much talked about in the tennis world before. But I think it deserves more attention. I salute the players who have the courage to come out and speak about that. I definitely wish him all the best. If he needs me, I’m here.”

Scoop — Going back to Emma – I don’t hold much hope v Sabalenka. It’s a mountain to climb.
There’ve been some comments on how underpowered she is against the top players. This could be partly because during the important developing years other players her own age were playing a lot of tennis and growing physically while Emma was a full time student. She left school at 18, with a lot to catch up on. Whether she can do this while playing full time is the big question.

Catherine, she won a grand slam when she was 19. It’s not the power of her shots, its other reasons. She was a top junior and she had a full junior career. I still think the biggest problem for her was once she won the US Open, she became a huge target and everyone who played her played it like it was their US Open final – and for her it was just another match. Then the losses and pressure deflated her confidence and aura. The rest of the WTA knocked her down several pegs and made her a journeywoman player mentally and physically. She has to wonder now: Was that US Open just a fluke glitch in the grand slam universe?

Scoop- Sabalenka won as expected but surely this was a match where Emma showed that much of the limelight was truly hers and truly deserved.

Raducanu might have played better in this loss to Sabalenka than she did at US Open final vs Fernandez. I would have asked her that question yesterday. It was a loss for Raducanu but also in some ways it was a win. But I was more impressed by Jarry beating Fonseca. Norrie next, then Carlos. Jarry is killing the ball right now. The other surprise is Munar vs Cilic in the fourth round. And Majchrzak vs Khachanov. Majchrzak is 29 and played Wimbledon main draw only two other times, losing 1R both times 2019, 2022.
