US Open Qualies 2024 Starts Monday With Intriguing Duels
19 Comments · Posted by Scoop Malinowski in Bios

Plenty of intriguing first round US Open qualies matchups….
The ancient Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas somehow has earned an entry into the qualies though he hasn’t played a pro match since losing first round at AO qualies 60 61 to Giulio Zeppieri. Pablo will earn $25,000 for losing to Lucas Van Aasche.
Veteran Kiki Mladenovic will play teen Linda Fruhvirtova.
Veteran Heather Watson will meet American teenager and highly regarded future star Clervie Ngounoue.
American black prospects Hailey Baptiste and Tyra Grant will clash for the first time.
Keep an eye on American teen Robin Montgomery who will play Brit Katie Birrell.
Denis Kudla vs Richard Gasquet.
Kukushkin vs Trungelitti will feature two over 30 journeymen who are not strangers to Grand Slam qualies.
Brazilian rising star Joao Fonseca vs Lukas Klein.
Two young guns – Martinn Damm vs Shintaro Mochizuki.
Powerhouse Federico Gomez of Argentina bludgeons the ball and recently won his first Challenger at age 27, he will face Gijs Brouwer. Gomez is a very animated fun player to watch.
JJ Wolf vs Oliver Crawford will be like two American bulls slugging it out.

Scoop, have a laugh at Cuevas but he is a solid hard courter and can beat giraffe-neck Van Asche… I’ll be all over that 9 to 1 moneyline 🙂 absolutely can win.
I Wonder if Paire will get past Tseng…
Diego Shortman is playing too… he will duke it out with Italy’s Pelligrino… isn’t the former retiring?
Broady / Virtinen should be a good one.

make that 12.5 to 1 odds on Cuevas moneyline 🙂

Not 100-1? ) Cuevas is gonna get trounced.
Scoop Malinowski · August 19, 2024 at 8:23 am
Cory, Cuevas has won ONE GAME all year in the ATP. 06 16 against Giulio Zeppieri. He hasn’t even played any Challengers or ITFs. What Cuevas might achieve today is the quickest loss in Grand Slam history – let’s see if this match lasts much longer than a half an hour )

Sorry I can’t give any analysis of Paire vs Tseng or Shortman vs Pellegrino but Virtanen should handle the Brit veteran lefty.
Cory · August 19, 2024 at 8:59 am
The “wisdom of the crowd” seems to agree with you, as the odds have risen to 16-to-1 for giraffe neck… love Cuevas! He will surprise you today – may not win but he’ll show up. 😉

Cory! Look for me I’ll be wearing all white long sleeve, orange miami open fedora, beige pants. Cuevas might have some trick up his sleeve and be ready to rumble also, and pull off a Raducanu ten in a row )

Cuevas looked okay but could not keep up with Doogie Howser’s firepower at all… i still think he could bang around the clay Challengers/250s if he cared to… at his age, he’ll probably take WCs at a couple South American tourneys in 2025 and call it a day.
I may pop out there Th/Fri… I’ll keep an eye out for u then. All I gotta do is look for the fedora. 🙂

Cory, I got stuck in traffic and arrived just after it ended, a friend reader Ryan Balon saw it and said he was off, forehand off too. Probably just came for the $25 via injury exemption, like Amir Weinstein did at the end. Gasquet was down 0-3 but then he started grunting in desperation and turned it around 64 75 vs Kudla who he only played one other time in 2018 and won then 76 63. Pierre Hugues Herbert came to watch at the end of the first set and then left. Looked like he came from practice with his big Yonex bag. Nobody recognized him in the tenth row. I saw Danilovic have game points for 5-0 in the third vs Xinyu Gao but failed to get that game, 4-1, then rain came and after delay she lost five in a row. My friend is coaching Maxime Janvier but he got rolled by young American Ethan Quinn 61 60, had game points in four games in the first set and lost all four. Garin and Wong had a great battle, a lot of emotional adrenaline and yelling, Wong prevailed despite the vocal Chilean support, 46 76 63. Wong’s coach from Nadal academy jots down notes after every single point. He was doing that in Newport too. The longest name in tennis history played today Guiomar Maristany Zuleta De Reales but she lost a short one to Kartal 36 36. Kukushkin vs Trungelitti went the distance with the Argentine prevailing 16 64 76. Paire lost another heartbreaker to Tseng 76 67 46 and a few guys were getting on Paires serves in the first set by overly cheering Tseng chanting his name, why? Probably a bet on Tseng is my only guess. Best outfit was Sasnovich in a long sleeve body suit with cool colors by K Swiss, I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot of it in the coming days with other players wearing it too. At the Mochizuki vs Damm Jr match won by Shintaro 76 in the third was a notable former player in the row ahead of me – Jared Donaldson, wearing a faded Stanford t shirt. He retired about 4 years ago with a knee problem and is now an intern investment banker in NYC. He was with two friends watching as a fan, looking like some guy who plays at the local public park. I saw Romanian Todoni save five match points in the last game, all after deuce vs Hibino but finally succumbed to the much smaller player. Keep an eye on Todoni. The day had two rain delays.

Mark, which day after qualies is over is the day everyone practices? Friday, Saturday or the Sunday before the main draw begins?
I went in the past but can’t remember which day.
Scoop Malinowski · August 20, 2024 at 10:03 am
Sunday is the secret great day. everybody is there training.

From my view it looks very bad for Sinner. The excuses story sounds very weak. Cahill’s defense sounds phony and cliched. But most damning is that Sinner is in hiding, he still hasn’t shown up at US Open. An innocent man would not be hiding like Sinner is now. His image and rep are taking a massive hit from this episode, he may not recover from this.
Sam · August 21, 2024 at 9:51 pm
Scoop, hasn’t Cahill been affiliated with three dopers now?? 😼. Yes, it was good to see Evert kinda admit what’s really going on.
And is this why Sinner didn’t show up at the Olympics—more stringent drug testing? I don’t believe he had tonsillitis—more like doperitis. 🤥
I think this will have a serious negative impact on his career, and deservedly so. But at the same time, my guess is that all the top players are doping.
Scoop Malinowski · August 22, 2024 at 8:49 am
Sam, yes Cahill involved with Halep, Agassi and Sinner, all three have PED histories. Though it’s unfair to blame Cahill for this coincidence. Cahill is a loyal coach and friend who automatically defends his players even if they are/were guilty. A good coach will take the bullet for the player. No comment on Fed or Rafa but I think Djokovic has always been clean. Early in his career he faked injuries and illness and fatigue as he was figuring out how to get to the top but then he found his way and ended that monkey business. I know Djokovic was always super fit because I saw him beat Monfils at US Open in five sets as a teenager (2006) after he collapsed twice for ten minutes each in the fifth, got up and won. So I think he had a tricky habit to trick opponents with trickery. As Roddick famously accused Djokovic of faking 16 or whatever injuries, etc. Once it was spotlighted, Djokovic stopped it which is around the time of the gluten free diet change. Djokovic became the ultimate physical beast but he was always super fit, super serious. Just took a few years to figure out how to get to the mountain top.

Scoop, well, Cahill at least needs to make his responses seem less canned. 😉

I hope you’re right, but nothing would surprise me these days.

16? 🤔
Just took a few years to figure out how to get to the mountain top.
And if he ate plenty of saturated fat from animal products as well as organ meats like liver, he’d probably be even fitter. 💪
Scoop Malinowski · August 22, 2024 at 10:14 pm
Sam, Cahill is reading off the script, same old tired cliches. I’m fairly certain Djokovic is clean and always was clean – the tennis deep state would have found something on him and used it to end his career. Unless Djokovic has some kind of inside info on Federer and Nadal that he uses as leverage to protect himself. You never know. I think Djokovic is as fit as he possibly could be. When he was tired in the Cincy final last year, I think he feigned it for a mind game because he was in a desperate precarious losing position. Desperate players make desperate moves. Anything to try to change the match flow. I’ve seen both opponents fake cramps. I’ve seen a player fake a leg injury, hop on one leg and still rifle forehand winners and close out a match on one leg (this year in Sarasota Open).

Yeah, Scoop, that’s always a possibility. 😏

I wonder how many minutes a day players typically practice their “deception” skills. 😁

Sam, these players are wizards with racquets, they can do anything.
