US Open 2025 Notebook

Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori defended their mixed doubles title and pocketed $1m, that’s an $800,000 raise from last year’s mixed doubles payday the Italian team earned. They beat Ruud/Iga in the final 63 57 10-6. Errani said this after the win during her on court speech: “I think this one is for all the doubles players that couldn’t play this tournament. I think this one is also for them.”

Former US Open champion Stan Wawrinka, age 40, was declined a US Open main draw wildcard.

2000 US Open king Marat Safin hit yesterday with Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov on Louis Armstrong Stadium. Safin is back co-coaching Rublev with Fernando Vicente.

Yesterday despite the rain, Coco Gauff and her team were outside on a practice court working on her serve.

Novak Djokovic hit with Holger Rune yesterday on Ashe.

Nick Kyrgios has not won a match all year. He has withdrawn from the US Open. He’s now skipped 11 of the last 12 Grand Slams dating back to 2023. Stick a fork in Nick.

Sloane Stephens has joined the ESPN broadcasting team for the 2025 US Open.

John McEnroe saluted Fred Stolle on last night’s ESPN broadcast, saying “Fred Stolle, God Rest his soul.” Mac responded to a Mary Joe Fernandez mention of Sandon Stolle, the son of Fred. McEnroe is the only US TV announcer to honor the Grand Slam champ and former ESPN analyst on air. A very popular figure in the sport from the 60s through 2000s, Stolle passed away earlier this year. Stolle also coached Vitas Gerulaitis.

Former Grand Slam champion and Australian Open tournament director Paul McNamee on the 2025 US Open mixed exhibition: “It was a successful show. The only bonafide doubles team won. Top players playing mixed is highly attractive – remember Hopman Cup? In my opinion, half field doubles teams and half wildcards with top singles players will work and be deserving of a title.”

The US Open 2025 draws “will be revealed” at high noon today. It is not known when they were actually created.

Because of persistent rain yesterday, not one qualies match was completed.

Have you seen the youngster from Peru, Buse? He seems very composed for his age. Nice serve, nice slice, nice net game.

Looking for a fedora headed person at court 10. Watching Gomez vs. Grenier right now on the telly and they are on fire & the crowd is going wild.

Yes I saw Buse, he finished that like a future star. Very nice energy from the Peruvian gallery. That was fun to experience. Watch out for that kid.

It was Gomezmania out there, what a thriller. I saw a lot of it. Though Gomez was dead at 67 03 but what do I know. Incredible match and I’m doing a story on it. Gomez mania.

Scoop, how do you expect the Djokovic-Tien match to play out?

  • Scoop Malinowski · August 24, 2025 at 9:15 am

Sam, Tien will be very difficult. He will play the best match of his life – keep in mind he has already beaten 2 or 3 top five players – and he will rise to this challenge. I hope Team Djokovic is doing their thorough homework on this guy. This is a set up tough draw to knock off Novak. I see Novak winning but am not ruling out the shocking upset either. Tough match.

Well, I guess we’ll see how Djokovic handles Aunt Fritzi next. 😏

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 1, 2025 at 8:22 am

Fritz has challenged Djokovic with tough tussles a few times but other times he’s gotten wiped out. Djokovic is looking really great again, outstanding performance vs Struff last night. Maybe his influencer can give him a new gameplan for this latest showdown. Influencers don’t really influence anything because what sells tennis is the action, the drama, the mind games, the controversy, the energy, the aura. Sports fans don’t need an influencer to help them love tennis.

    What do influencers actually do?

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 10, 2025 at 8:21 am

    Promote themselves by using tennis.

  • Sam · September 18, 2025 at 2:47 am

    They sound like parasites. 🪲

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 18, 2025 at 8:15 am

Sam, Tim Henman once said Marcelo Rios told him the tennis media parasite off the talent of the players. Interesting quote, I always tried to keep that in mind with what I write and try to give tennis fans more than they expect and want.
