US Open 2024 Notebook and Observations

  • Emma Raducanu on the new era without Andy Murray: “It doesn’t feel different at all. Tennis is unforgiving in that sense. No matter who you are, it just moves on. There’s always another match, there’s always another tournament. Of course…I watched him win this tournament but yeah, it’s fast paced like life – it’s old news the next day.”
  • Andy Roddick has been very supportive and defensive for Jannik Sinner after his twice failing drug tests earlier this year. If Roddick was still playing and a top 5 elite player, there is absolutely no chance he would be so supportive and defensive for Sinner. This is your proof that Roddick is controlled by the establishment totally. He will never dare to defy their agendas.
  • These tennis influencers don’t influence anything but it does get them good seats to watch matches they don’t really seem to enjoy watching.
  • Will the Carota Boys be wearing I LOVE Clostebol T-shirts?
  • Didn’t expect to see anyone wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt during US Open practice on Thursday but nine-time Grand Slam champion and 2016 Olympic gold medalist Bethanie Mattek Sands isn’t your conventional player.
  • I’m halfway through former ATP pro Conor Niland’s “The Racket” and it’s a tennis book masterpiece. As entertaining and insightful as any you’ll ever read.
  • Djokovic talks about winning Olympic gold at US Open ASICS event in NYC. “I’ve had the honor and privilege to carry the flag at the opening ceremony for Serbia in 2012 in London and that was the best feeling I’ve experienced as an athlete overall until I won gold in Paris…definitely the highlight of my career… It was one of the best levels of tennis I’ve produced in years.”
  • John McEnroe’s praise words to his partner Novak Djokovic on Ashe Stadium after a doubles exo 10-8 win vs Agassi and Alcaraz: “What you’ve done for our sport, and what you just accomplished the last couple months, particularly Olympics, thank you man, for being part of this sport.”
  • On Thursday Yulia Putintseva practiced on court 8 with her coach/hitting partner, taking the court from Adrian Mannarino and his coach. After her practice on the way to the locker room she walked onto court 6 while ATP no. 60 Alexander Shevchenko was hitting with ATP 331 Alexey Zakharov to tell him something. Maybe they had a date later?
  • You rarely see big stars walking the grounds of the US Open but I saw two on Tuesday – Vika Azarenka walking back through the crowds to Ashe all the way from court 16 after a practice. And Roberto Bautista Agut walking back to Ashe from court 8.
  • I saw two former prominent players on Tuesday on the grounds totally unrecognized – Kevin Anderson near court 7 and Jared Donaldson watching Mochizuki beat Martin Damm Jr. on court 7.

    Emma R on her scheduling:

‘ I have always done things a little differently to other players…. I mix and match. I don’t think I will ever be the player who is playing close to 30 events a year…when I was playing juniors even. I have always done it that way. I’m not in a rush to play loads. I would rather target tournaments and be ready to play tournaments that I’m entered in.’

Translation: I’m a grand slam champion and a star, I do things my way.
