US Open 2020: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Dominic Thiem won his first major title in his fourth attempt, a sensational five set triumph over Alexander Zverev, one of the most compelling US Open finals of this century.

There is no more deserving Grand Slam champion than Thiem, perhaps other than his conquest Zverev, who won the hearts of the tennis world today with his example and performance.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Zverev to lose in the fifth set tiebreaker after holding a two set lead but Thiem had more Grand Slam experience to draw on, all three of his previous final losses were to Nadal twice in Paris and Djokovic in AO this year.

Now Zverev has this priceless experience in his pocket and he surely will win his first major soon.

I gained more respect for Zverev from this defeat than any of his previous career wins. He played a superb match from start to bittersweet finish but it was the class he showed in battle and especially after the match how he accepted the defeat so gracefully and how he broke down emotionally when thanking his parents who were not allowed to attend the tournament. Zverev surely increased his fanbase worldwide considerably because of the way he conducted himself in this unforgettable final.

Conversely, one player who surely has lost a significant amount of fans because of her questionable behavior during this US Open was the champion Naomi Osaka, who bizarrely elected to honor some career criminals by wearing their names on her mask before each of her seven matches. Among those so called victims of social injustice saluted by Osaka were rapists, drug addicts, counterfeiters, traffickers, juvenile delinquents, thugs and lowlife losers. Osaka showed no respect for Jacob Blake’s 14 year old rape victim or the pregnant woman’s belly that George Floyd pointed a loaded gun at.

Most disturbing of all was the photo of a happy Osaka posing with her boyfriend and her new US Open trophy. In the photo Osaka and the goonball rapper were smiling with him giving the middle finger to the world, right on Arthur Ashe Stadium court, inside the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The great Arthur Ashe surely rolled over in his grave, witnessing such obscene gesture on the illustrious, historic court that bears his name and legacy. Shame on Osaka and the disgusting company she keeps around. And shame on the media for giving her a pass for this violation of sportsmanship because if Novak Djokovic or Tennys Sandgren did it, they would be crucified.

Many tennis fans have revolted on social media against Osaka because of her controversial activities this past fortnight. Many boycotted watching the tournament on TV. It’s a stunning shame because two years ago Osaka was as beloved and popular as anyone young first time major winner. She captivated all of our hearts with her shy, humble, classy, bashful, endearing demeanor. The Japanese Haitian woman-child had the sport wrapped around her finger. But with her stupid anti white stunts this summer, Osaka will go from most liked player to most hated. Then of course, she will cry racism.

One long time tennis fan even suggested Yonex dropping their sponsorship deal Osaka, because she is giving then respected company a bad image. Keep in mind, the highly sensitive Yonex company gives fines to Yonex racquet using pros who break their racquets on court.

It’s a crying shame because Osaka could be one of the great champions in women’s tennis history. One veteran tennis player I know, says Osaka is the best female tennis player he ever saw play, astounded by her blend of power, consistency, IQ, fighting spirit and phenomenal movement abilities.

Osaka is now 3-0 in her first three Grand Slam finals, and like Zverev and Thiem, you can be certain she will play in many more major finals.

Sometimes people who achieve superstardom too fast, like Osaka, need a reality check. Perhaps an after midnight hike through Chicago with her pals Frances Tiafoe, Michael Mmoh, Chris Eubanks would serve her well – and help her to understand how ruthless and violent and scary the crime world is outside of her sheltered tennis bubble life.

The US Open 2020 wasn’t even supposed to happen after NYC mayor DeBlasio said in the summer that all non-essential events would be canceled but of course, somehow he contradicted his words about the nation’s biggest tennis tournament. When money talks the truth stays silent, so the Russian proverb says.

This US Open edition featured only essential workers and no fans, well, sort of. If you looked closely around Ashe Stadium you saw some cardboard cutouts of Black Lives Matter faces the USTA strangely installed, as a creative attempt to generate some kind of fake atmosphere in Ashe. The good news is that at least those cardboard people didn’t come to life and riot and loot the complex, like some kind of new age Twilight Zone episode.

This Twilight Zone US Open provided so much wondrous tennis and inspiration for so many tennis fans who have been clamoring for months to see the sport alive again. Even if there was no crowd roars, no energy, no buzzing food courts, no spontanous bumping into old friends you haven’t seen in five years, heck some people even told me they missed the morning traffic into the venue!

But most importantly, pro tennis is back, two new worthy champions declared themselves and our world is on it’s way to returning to normal life, as we knew it. See you next year US Open!

All Lives Matter.

Bravo Scoop. Couldn’t have said it better. What a glaring contrast of winners; a humbled, grateful Alexander Zverev, and a cavalier, ignorant and racist Naomi Osaka.

Bingo Bango Cory. Maybe didn’t sing enough praise for Thiem, such a class competitor and now finally a champion, destiny fulfilled after heartbreaking delays and such a bumpy road to finally get there. Always say to question everything, one thing that struck me watching this final was the first four sets seemed to be played at a lower level of intensity, Zverev did not roar a cmon until the fifth set. For some odd reason. Almost as if the first four sets were tank sets and the fifth was real. Zverev should have shown more intensity in the third and fourth sets like he did in the fifth or he knew he wasn’t supposed to win those sets. Or he is still inexperienced in using his emotional adrenaline power source. Still it was a great match either way, very memorable, the fifth set was spectacular. Feel bad for AZ because the margin of victory and defeat was only two points. Fifth set tiebreakers are a cruel way to determine a major champion, I’d rather see them play it out like Isner Mahut. If it goes super long tough luck, that’s tennis, that’s will to win, that’s the beauty of sport. Major finals should not be governed by a clock.

Novak Djokovic had very high praises for both Thiem and Zverev: djokernole

This is what sport is all about. Respect, appreciation and friendship. Regardless of the rivalry these two guys have and the amazing battle they had yesterday, they still showed big heart and inspired many tennis players. Thank you 🙏 both Domi and Sasha for standing strong for your character values and seeing always what matters the most – love and respect for each other. Congratulations to both of you for the great achievement and fantastic match you gave to the tennis world. @domithiem @alexzverev123

Does anybody know if Federer and Nadal made any social media comments/respect/praises/congrats to Thiem and Zverev like Djokovic did? Or did they not comment at all? This is very impressive by Djokovic and he deserves respect for doing this. Pure heartfelt class by Djokovic.

Domi Thiem story memory from my friend Ryan Arguelles:

I have a story on thiem. When I came home in the Philippines in 2010 or 2011 I stayed in the big city of metro manila for 2 weeks coaching my godchild and supporting him in his itf junior career so I coached and trained him after I landed in manila from new york and my godchild junior player landed came from different city of the Philippines and we meet at the airport and went to hotel and then go to Rizal tennis center in manila to formally register in junior itf grade 1. My player jong jong cabusas lost in the qualifying round but we stayed for the whole tournament to watch. Kygrious, kokkinakis and Dominic thiem we’re at that junior itf tournament and kygrios won it against the Filipino junior player who was no.9 in the world. Jeson patrombon is his name. Thiem lost earlier in the 2nd round but what amazes me was kygrious won that tournament in the Philippines and thiem lost but today thiem was crowned a grandslam champion. Thiem was skiny and small 10 years.ago in that itf junior tournament

One unexpected note about this US Open is this site drew the biggest visitor numbers by far. BY FAR. So the site is doing better than ever after all the adversity and turmoil earlier this year. Thanks to everyone who visits and comments or just visits the site. You’re support and interest are most appreciated and I will continue to do the best job I can for you with this basically one man tennis information outlet.

  • George · September 14, 2020 at 10:51 pm

    Well said Skip.

Thank goodness those vile leftists have left the site, especially that know-it-all, childless, old-maid cat lady, whatever her name is.

Are you saying that something might have been going on?
If so, why would Zverev have even bothered in the 5th set?

“Fifth set tiebreakers are a cruel way to determine a major champion”

    Right–too much luck involved.

“One long time tennis fan even suggested Yonex dropping their sponsorship deal Osaka, because she is giving then respected company a bad image.”

If enough people contacted them and complained, they just might.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 15, 2020 at 9:01 am

George, Im sure they still visit and read here but they know they are now the silent small minority.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 15, 2020 at 9:03 am

Sam, you know the old exhibition formula, split sets than play the third one for real. It was curious why Zverev was completely stoic emotionally in the later stages of third and fourth sets when he was so close to the title and then early in the fifth set he suddenly roars a cmon. Just an observation.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 15, 2020 at 9:05 am

Sam, no I think it’s unlikely Yonex would drop Osaka, political correctness controls most corporate. My guess is they will give her a private warning.

  • Sam · September 15, 2020 at 4:07 pm

“Sam, you know the old exhibition formula, split sets than play the third one for real.”

Actually, I didn’t know that, Scoop, but I’m glad to now. Thanks. 🙂

“It was curious why Zverev was completely stoic emotionally in the later stages of third and fourth sets when he was so close to the title and then early in the fifth set he suddenly roars a cmon. Just an observation.”

Wow. It seems like the more you learn about sports, the more corrupt you discover they are. 🙁

“Sam, no I think it’s unlikely Yonex would drop Osaka, political correctness controls most corporate. My guess is they will give her a private warning.”

Here’s the thing–the more complaints they get, the better. I called up Yonex today, and they told me to send any complaints about Osaka to support@yonexusa.net. I plan to send them an e-mail, and encourage others who feel Osaka is a poor role model to do so as well.

As for Jacob Blake,he did not rape 14 years old child, but had an assault on ex-girlfriend, https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/09/03/fact-check-jacob-blake-sex-assault-charge-tied-woman-not-child/5700351002/

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 16, 2020 at 9:27 am

Krzysztof, any way you slice it, jacob blake is not worthy of being lionized or saluted in any way shape or form.

  • Janella Calcutt · September 18, 2020 at 1:58 am

I just read about what Trump is accused of. I guess model AMy Morris has accused him of abusing her. Apparently she claims he assaulted her during the US Open years ago. What do you think about it?

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 18, 2020 at 7:27 am

Hi Janella. Why did she wait just before the election to say this now 23 years later instead of reporting to police the next day? It surely is more fake news as part of the endless fake news smear campaign by the biased anti Trump anti white media political activists.

  • Sam · September 18, 2020 at 12:22 pm

According to her, her boyfriend was in the VIP box too. Can he confirm her story? Can anyone else?

Actually, the fact she didn’t report it to the police doesn’t mean much–many woman are afraid to go to the police, for good reason. But why didn’t she reveal this a few years ago, when everyone else came out with their “revelations”? Or why didn’t she reveal it, say, last year?

Yes, you have to ask: Why did she wait until a month and a half before the election to say this? Her timing is very, um, interesting. 😉

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 18, 2020 at 2:03 pm

Sam, my money is on this suspect being a fake news media manufactured mud slinging money grubb. All the demonrats care about his slandering smearing and lying about Trump because they can’t assassinate him.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 18, 2020 at 2:05 pm

There is absolutely no chance Trump assaulted this woman at the US Open. If he was drunk and did do it, it would have been front page news in the NYC tabloids the next day. The power of media manipulation is so great that it can manipulate people to want to change their gender. Think about how powerful and evil that is.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 18, 2020 at 2:09 pm

The fake news media has a monopoly on information control and dissemination but Trump has crushed the media apparatus by awakening millions along with Q. Media manipulation pwoer has been greatly weakened. And you can be sure the deep state are very angry about this turn of events and the future consequences.

  • Sam · September 18, 2020 at 4:53 pm

“There is absolutely no chance Trump assaulted this woman at the US Open. If he was drunk and did do it, it would have been front page news in the NYC tabloids the next day.”

Well, she claims he did it behind a partition or something blocking a bathroom. Here’s some text from an article:

“Dorris cannot recall if she told Binn the full details of the alleged assault, but she says she asked him to tell Trump to leave her alone. She said she told Binn: ‘He’s all over me. I can’t deal with this. You have to do something.’

“Binn did not respond to a request for comment. However, according to Trump’s lawyers, Binn told them he had no recollection of Dorris telling him that anything inappropriate had happened with Trump or that she felt uncomfortable around him.

“Dorris said that soon after the alleged incident, she phoned a friend who lived in the city and told them what had happened. ‘I think I just felt safe knowing that I had someone in New York that I could go to, God forbid it got worse,’ she said.”

It’s interesting that her former boyfriend Binn has not corroborated her account. I don’t know what the truth is. However, if Binn could confirm what she supposedly told him, that would help her case.

Anyway, the timing is awfully suspicious. As a result, I think it’s only normal to be skeptical. Without Binn’s confirmation, her case isn’t that convincing, in my opinion.

  • Sam · September 18, 2020 at 5:01 pm

“Sam, my money is on this suspect being a fake news media manufactured mud slinging money grubb.”

    That’s certainly possible.

“The power of media manipulation is so great that it can manipulate people to want to change their gender. Think about how powerful and evil that is.”

    It’s sick.

“Media manipulation pwoer has been greatly weakened. And you can be sure the deep state are very angry about this turn of events and the future consequences.”

    Isn’t that great? 🙂

Anyway, about the assault, obviously I wasn’t there, so I don’t know what happened. But I would like to hear what Binn (the former boyfriend) has to say about the matter before reaching any firm conclusions.

Speaking of tennis, I see that Djokovic passed a challenging test today. A final with both him and Nadal would likely be exciting. 🙂

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 18, 2020 at 5:08 pm

Enough about these anti Trump fake news fabrications. Wawrinka is now working with Valverdu. Svitolina beat Kuznetsova. Djokovic beat his buddy Krajinovic. Osaka doesn’t want to play Roland Garros.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 20, 2020 at 6:59 am

Rafa shockingly knocked off by Schwartzman. One of the biggest shock upsets of the century. Diego now 1-9 vs Rafa.
