Thursday At US Open Qualies

I really like the new grandstand (above photo).   It’s spacious and modern and it has a shady side. Today it featured some potent practices – first with good buddies Sock and Kyrgios.  The two fun-loving superstars enjoyed a typical light hearted yet also intense practice with Nick grunting heavily during the initial baseline hitting.  Sock was at first unusually subdued but eventually showed his humor when he ripped a first forehand at Nick when he came to net for volleys. Kyrgios smiled at it and later whacked a practice overhead at Sock’s three man entourage which was planted in a corner about five yards from the baseline. The smash hit one of Sock’s crew in the foot. The two went at it all out in the practice set but sat with each other during breaks chatting. Roger Federer started this trend of sitting with his practice partner at majors rather than apart – I believe it was with Hrbaty but I will check my records…  Feliciano Lopez practiced on grandstand later  with David Ferrer and both went at it very hard both grunting and running all out. It was an awesome show of first class tennis. Interestingly both Spaniards elected to sit apart on breaks preferring the company of their teams. Lopez was wearing a black Ellesse tank top – a choice of attire I have never seen a pro wear before on the practice court.  Stosur waited and watched the practice out of view of the fans and players in a hallway as she stretched – presumably she had the court next… Reader Thomas Tung said he spotted actor mark Ruffalo watching the tennis action today with his family…  I didn’t see any stars today but I did spot former pros Galo Blanco Johan Van Herck and Igor Kunitsyn… The 97 year old black tennis legend Bob Ryland was at qualis today. Ryland is not wheelchair bound and gets around on his own two feet… CiCi Bellis just annihilated Grace min 64 60 and vented a lot of positive intensity in the process. Bellis is newly blonde and after the win was spotted roaming the grounds with a boyfriend… Taylor Townsend thumped Olga Savchuk 62 60… Fading star melanie Oudin lost another heartbreaker 64 in the third to myrtille Georges… Remember Larri Passos? The former coach of Gustavo Kuerten was here today coaching Alize Lim who lost in three sets to Donna Vekic despite being up a set and a break. Good win for Vekic who I first saw play qualies as a fifteen year old several years ago…  Ryan Harrison continued his hot summer post Newport with a straight set win today vs DeJoore of Belgium… A rain delay changed the schedule and a lot of matches are being played now at 10:23. Expect a typical post midnight US Open qualies night… Players who usually participate in US Open qualies but are conspicuously absent this year – Larcher De Brito – Romina Oprandi – Ricardo Hocevar – matwe middlekoop – Rik DeVoest – David Guez – Giovanni Lapentti – Golubev .

Scoop sorry I missed you, there is something about that new grandstand I don’t like, seemed like the balls were going into the stands often, and it feels like a main stadium court, maybe it’s excessive for how much use it will get. I mean after a couple of rounds will they really need it?

JG: It’s not as good as the old GS but I like it as it has shade – could be worse – but still wish the USTA would preserve the old GS –
