The Leader and the Puppet

ATP, via it’s ATP player council, has decided to cancel Wimbledon points for 2022 competitors meaning 2021 winner Novak Djokovic will lose the 2000 points even if he defends the title next month…

Nadal and Djokovic both talked about the controversy yesterday in their press conferences after beating Jordan Thompson and Yoshihito Nishioka, respectively…

Rafael Nadal, member of ATP player council, on Wimbledon/points. “I don’t have a clear opinion. There is always a board or a person making decisions and all players have to follow. Every player has a different opinion about all matters and in this world we need somebody to make decisions. Doesn’t matter if I agree.”

Novak Djokovic, not a member of ATP player council, on Wimbledon/points: “I’m affected because I’m not able to defend 4.000 points [Australia and Wimbledon], but I’m happy to see that the ATP and the Players decided to show Wimbledon that when you make a wrong decision, there are consequences.”

Djokovic said he had access to a document where the UK government gave Wimbledon other options apart from banning RUS/BLR. “They still decided for this one without talking to anybody. I’m for the union, always was.”

“Wimbledon is still Wimbledon, it was my dream as a kid, I never looked at it for points or prize money, but I understand the group of players affected. It’s a lose-lose situation.”
