Tennis Pros Close Encounters with Trump

My fourteenth book hatched from an idea. I realized three years ago I know a handful of people who have had close encounters with Donald Trump, from boxing, tennis, media and a few in business.

I compiled the first ten or so and decided to keep going and hunt for more. Eventually I collected 53, enough for a quick read book.

The encounters range from short and sweet to more deeper and revealing. Here are some of the tennis pro close encounters with Trump.

Tennis players close encounters with Donald Trump
Donald Trump has been a long time tennis player and enthusiast. Many former professionals discussed their close encounters with Trump

John McEnroe said Trump offered him $1 million cash to play a Battle of the Sexes exo vs Serena.

Johan Kriek played doubles with him and jokingly refused to comment about The Donald’s game except to say the Trump/Kriek tandem won. “All that matters is winning.”

John Lloyd said he played golf and doubles with Trump and that he’s average from the baseline but a net ninja. Lloyd also added that Trump is a notoriously fast golfer, the anti-Nadal, he rushes through 18 holes with Kyrgios quickness, marching up to the ball and swinging, opting for no practice strokes.

Ann Grossman said she walked by Trump on a midtown Manhattan street the day after she lost to Arantxa Sanchez Vicario at US Open and Trump recognized her and made a comment, “Great match yesterday Ann!.”

Trump came to watch Marcelo Rios vs Giorgio Galimberti US Open night match on Armstrong after seeing a blowout on Ashe. Rios had lost the second set when Trump arrived during the changeover, Rios noticed it and became inspired by being watched by Mr. New York and cruised to win the last two sets 62 62. It was some of the best tennis I ever saw from Rios at the US Open.

Vijay Amritraj did a TV interview with Trump in his Manhattan office. Vijay said he called Trump to set the interview and Trump returned the call shortly after.

Roscoe Tanner was invited to Mar A Lago to play a pro am.

I hope there is a juicy story about Sabatini dating Trump. What a bevy of ladies the man has and continues to enjoy! You have to hand it to him.

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 24, 2020 at 5:02 pm

I think the Trump-Sabatini relationship lasted as long as Kyrgios and Bouchard, if it really happened. Can’t remember Sabatini dating anyone. She seemed totally sheltered and kept in the tennis bubble.

Leo Borg vs Gulbis in Pau, France Challenger.

That should be on live stream, must see

I thought we weren’t going to bring up Trump on this web site? Just the mere sight of the guy gives me the shivers. What a complete and utter debacle. When he played tennis, he probably cheated just like when he plays golf.

Rick Reilly, the noted Sports Illustrated writer, wrote a book about how Trump was a merciless cheater at golf:

ā€œDonald Trump is the worst cheat ever and he doesnā€™t care who knows,ā€ Rick Reilly says as he describes a man he has known for 30 years. ā€œI always say golf is like bicycle shorts. It reveals a lot about a man. And golf reveals a lot of ugliness in this president.ā€

You should have interviewed Reilly for your book, Scoop. Please no more about Trump.

I found a guy who played 18 holes with Trump. Said he talked non stop for 18 holes and has a pretty good foot wedge.

    Scoop

Got to hand it to you. Your love for Trump knows no boundaries.

As I said before on T-P a short while ago that story about Sabatini and Trump is pretty much fantasy. Gabriela has always been reticent about her private life and DT is probably the last person she’d have been interested in.

When young she had a few arranged ‘dates’ with celebrity men for publicity purposes. She never discussed them.

And yes, please no politics here and no Trump or I’ll jump in with some juicy stories about Boris Johnson, D Trump in waiting.

    Trump and Tanner
    Trump Pardons Tanner
Trump makes Tanner head of Budget Management, and he robs us blind and ends up with all of Trumps previous picks..

Where are the modern tales. Sandgren and Isner werenā€™t available to you ave Orange Pom poms?

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 25, 2020 at 9:25 am

Sandgren of course was included in the book. Dave Koz, a TV show host, had several Trump interview encounters and I included Koz photo of him interviewing Sandgren.

Not a 100% Trump fan but he’s a lot better than the other options. A LOT.

  • Jeff · February 25, 2020 at 11:07 am

I think the Republicans should run someone else other than Trump to get his odious presence off the world stage. I am sure all Republicans would support that.

  • catherine · February 25, 2020 at 11:42 am

This thread is going to implode. We used to have this rule on T-P – no politics.

Do you want my views on Brexit ? No, I thought not šŸ™‚

  • Andrew Miller · February 25, 2020 at 11:49 am

Staying off this thread, but hopefully on the site. Sadly the politics ruins tennis talk.

  • Hartt · February 25, 2020 at 11:52 am

Maybe those Americans who want to discuss Trump (or other American politics) could find somewhere else to do that.

  • Jon King · February 25, 2020 at 12:18 pm

Count me among those who refuse to participate in this thread.

  • George · February 25, 2020 at 2:55 pm

Lol! What are the other options on the Democrat side?

The socialists will outlaw tennis clubs because of the income inequality. Then they will make free admission to the US Open since it is not fair for evil corporations to sponsor the event and take up all the first row seats.

God bless Donald Trump! The best thing is watching Trump Derangement Syndrome in the pompous, over-educated coastal elites.

  • Andrew Miller · February 25, 2020 at 3:03 pm

Above example why tennis, politics don’t mix.

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 25, 2020 at 5:05 pm

Trump tennis talk not political talk. The man loves tennis. Became a part of tennis world. That was the intent. Not political bickering.

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 25, 2020 at 5:07 pm

Can’t argue with you George. Well said.

  • Andrew Miller · February 25, 2020 at 6:08 pm

Relatives that worked at his tennis club. He was never there. Not all that much interest in the sport. It isn’t his sport. Enjoy.

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 25, 2020 at 6:14 pm

Trump did have a box at the US Open for many years Andrew. I saw him at Rios vs Galimberti on Armstrong, was surprised to see Trump trek all the way over from his Ashe box to sit with the regular people. Carling Bassett Seguso said Trump sat in her box at US Open with her dad John Bassett. The man loves tennis but doesnt play much anymore. All my sources say he has a mediocre game, solid at net but inconsistent at baseline.

  • Andrew Miller · February 25, 2020 at 6:18 pm

Mostly because he’s a New Yorker – is, was, will always be. John Bassett was world-class wealth.

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 25, 2020 at 6:21 pm

Trump grew up in Queens, never knew that. Lloyd Carroll told me that, he had a couple of Trump encounters related to his role as a Queens chronicle. Lloyd Carroll a three page part of the Trump book.

  • Andrew Miller · February 25, 2020 at 6:24 pm

Like I said, not my thread. The sport has many fans and they are rich, poor, tall, short, blue and red and whatever.

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 25, 2020 at 6:54 pm

Nishioka goes down to his Shenzen final victime Herbert, 75 62.

  • jg · February 25, 2020 at 7:13 pm

I saw a video of Trump playing tennis from a while back, he looked awful, couldnā€™t move, heā€™s more obese now, he can barely move, he was using a HUGE oversized racquet so it could appear he could swat a ball at the net, more important question and trivia is which recent president ripped up the White House tennis court?

On another note, I saw some of Leo Borg Gulbis, Borg should stick to juniors for now, he clearly has potential but itā€™s way too early for him to play players like Gulbis. That said check out his backhand, itā€™s Borgese, mirror image stroke.

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 25, 2020 at 7:27 pm

jg, no Trump is not going to win any USTA senior tournaments, unless he has me or Dan as his partner and a very very weak draw. I think I can carry Trump to a title, so too could Dan.

  • jg · February 25, 2020 at 7:31 pm

Ok I think the court is still there, I saw a pic of Obama playing hoops on a court that had tennis lines on it, of course Gerald Ford famously played there, George Bush sr too, I think Chelsea Clinton took lessons as did Obamaā€™s kids, although they took lessons where I play ( which is why I thought Bush jr ripped up the court) Could be Tiafoe played an exo there when he was a jr. No activity from Trump literally ( except lame golf playing with a cart Iā€™m sure)

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 25, 2020 at 7:37 pm

I actually played a very fit Air Force guy who said he used to coach Jimmy Carter to play tennis at Camp David. Didn’t say anything memorable about Mr Peanut’s game. Just like Kriek would give no details on Trump’s game other than they won. )

  • jg · February 25, 2020 at 7:40 pm

I remember my son played a jr tournament at Andrews Air Force base, had to go thru security to get in

  • Jeff · February 26, 2020 at 3:00 pm

Trump is an awful tennis player and terrible athlete in general. I saw footage and he was hitting the ball over the fence.

  • Jeff · February 26, 2020 at 11:08 pm

I am not sure Trump could run 100 meters without falling down. He has no coordination or balance. One of the worst athletes probably in the world.

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 27, 2020 at 7:29 am

Trump could ride a unicycle while juggling hot dogs.

  • Jeff · February 27, 2020 at 11:06 am

Judging by his physical condition, he wouldn’t have hot dogs to juggle since he would probably eat them.

  • George · February 27, 2020 at 12:33 pm

  • Scoop Malinowski · February 27, 2020 at 12:55 pm

Richard pagliaro claims he saw Trump devour two hot dogs in about ten seconds at a Connors senior tour eco in Westchester county.
