Tennis Behind The Scenes

Former 2015 junior Wimbledon champion Sofya Zhuk, who recently quit pro tennis at age 20, revealed on Instagram some of the trials and tribulations she endured which presumably led to her prematurely ending her once prospective WTA career.

TENNIS BEHIND THE SCENES by Sofya Zhuk

So I was thinking for a long time to post about what really happens behind the scenes of what you see on the TV.

1. It’s truly not that colorfully and fun until you reach like top 60-70 WTA. You’re still not making that much money because you have to cover travels expenses, coaches, hotels and living expenses. Plus to that you’re basically never home and always live in hotels…

2. If you’re outside of top 100 you have to play quailes on almost every WTA tournament which is far from how they treat you when you’re playing in Main Draw which is sad.

3. Often people forget about players who play ITF to get through to WTA. Many people don’t see how much effort and training it takes to even get to be playing ITF tournaments. And WTA and ITF are completely two different organizations and they treat their players way different which is also very sad to see, which Tara Moore had to fight so hard for the ITF players to get financial help from ITF during the COVID-19 because they weren’t gonna do it if not her.

4. We trained daily for hours and hours on the hottest weather out there just to be able to compete on the highest level when you see us on TV, but you never see what truly happens behind the TV like living on pain killers.

Anyway there is way more details in this but couldn’t type it all.

Players in the past rarely complained publicly about the losing side of the tennis universe, about the pains and agonies of not living up to expectation and dreams. In the past these players just floated away and disappeared, players like Kristian Pless, Brian Dabul, Julien Jean-Pierre, Levar Harper-Griffith, Monique Viele, Angelique Widjaja, Alexandra Stevenson, Nina Louarsabishvili, Melanie Oudin. But now some of these players like Zhuk are slowly, gradually speaking out and giving us a more complete picture of pro tennis.

I never forget the quote from Todd Martin about how he felt about Pete Sampras’ career. He made a semi joking yet truthful sincere remark about how Sampras had wrecked his tennis dreams. Todd was 4-18 career vs Pete and Pete eliminated him from majors six times, including Wimby semis and AO final, but Martin finally beat Pete in a major in four sets at 2001 AO R16.

Zhuk’s story reminds me of Máté Valkusz, junior no1 player. He’s had so many injuries and health problems, painful treatments, last year he came back but had another injury. His match with Sinner was epic, even though he was completely out of shape he made it very competitive, actually, he bagelled Sinner in the 2nd set! It’s just the lack of match practice that made him lose narrowly. From what i gathered from the net he’s fine now, hope he’ll have a good season next year.

Seems like she has wanted to be a model from a young age. Maybe she just needed to work harder and pose less.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 14, 2020 at 9:05 am

Karl, modeling life appears to be a lot easier and less stressful than a pro tennis career. What career for a girl is more stressful than pro tennis? They have to dedicate and sacrifice so much of their lives to just become an elite national junior – and then even most of those don’t come close to making it as a pro. But modeling careers are a different stress – lots of rejection and the top ones have to sell their souls. Was saddened to see that Naomi Campbell went to Epstein Island. My guess is Zhuk will get tired of chasing the modeling career dream and go back to tennis after a hiatus, like Capriati, Barty, Date, etc.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 14, 2020 at 9:07 am

JohnnyTD, forgot about Valkusz, so many no. 1 juniors drift away. Too many. You would think they all would make it.

  • Karl Martin · July 14, 2020 at 7:42 pm

She would have to be very critical of herself and her coaches to truly get to the bottom of her lack of pro success. She won early and never went all in to get to the next level. Her game was solid, top 100-150 solid, but never enough to get to the real money, top 50-70 level.

She never developed a killer weapon, no amazing serve, no amazing winner hitting forehand. She got her game to a good level, never risked redesigning it, taking a year or 2 and really getting herself a weapon. When you do not have such a weapon, the games and matches you play are longer and more grueling. Look at her record, so many 3 setters and 7-5 sets. Thus the need to “live on pain killers”. Her defensive style and lack of a weapon led to that as much as anything.

She was very interested in glamour life. She has been an IG crazed girl for years. Her talents were pretty good but would have required 100% buy in, along with developing a different kind of weapon.

So in the end, like anything, she could have changed her fate. Less posing and worrying about how cute she was, more taking a risk to develop a different kind of weapon, all would have helped.

Karl, good points. She got frustrated with the sport as many do, but I feel she will get bored with posing for selfies and cruising around Miami with little purpose. She will begin to miss playing, training, competing, the drive to improve. Her best friend roommate is a top 100 player, so she will get the itch again. She is a great player, just needs a little polish, refining and power. Easily can get better when her spark returns.

Credit to Bari Weiss for resigning from fake news new york times, the enemy of the people. Weiss asserts the nyt manipulated the public to believe the leftist agenda: “Stories are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than allow a curious public to read about the world and draw their own conclusions.” Like I told you, the mainstream media is about controlling the sheeple, they hate you if you have different beliefs. nyt is the true enemy of the people, as Trump boldly stated. boycott nyt.

  • JohnnyTD · July 16, 2020 at 3:10 pm

    ^NYT is a joke.

More tennis events got cancelled like the basel one and the american nationals.

Lots of players are still undecided whether to go to the USO or not.

This funny Djokovic article cheered me up though 😀

    https://www.sportskeeda.com/tennis/news-novak-djokovic-spotted-guru-claims-discovered-covid-healing-pyramids

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 16, 2020 at 6:55 pm

    They are lying to us.

The COVID results are false. They are counting negatives as positives.

None of the numbers are true.

    TRUTH BOMB Bomb

This isn’t about COVID 19 or BLACK LIVES MATTER. This is a major cover up for PEDOPHILIA and HUMAN TRAFFICKING.

Media refuses to ask any questions about Maxwell, the biggest arrest of the century. Fake fraud media wants the child sex rape trafficking stories to vanish, so they can control you with covid fear bs. Pro tennis, careers, lives, businesses are being ruined by a political hoax.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 16, 2020 at 6:56 pm

It’s sinister and calculated. They hate Trump because he’s about to expose all of them and their treason corruption and pedofile blackmail!!

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 16, 2020 at 7:10 pm

Now we are learning Washington Redskins owner Dan SNYDER is involved in sex trafficking. Trump is exposing them all. Best President in American history. Draining the swamp of all evil one week at a time. Just a matter of time before Patriots vanquish these satanic monsters.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 16, 2020 at 7:12 pm

In tennis news, Jack Sock beat Fritz in WTT, he also won doubles. Good wins for the comebacking Sock. Also Brenda Fruhvirtova, a 13 year old phenom from Czech Republic, beat WTA veteran and former doubles no. 1 Katarina Siniakova 76 61 in singles. Remember the name Brenda Fruhvirtova, who also has a phenom sister Linda. I’ve seen both play at Herr and Orange Bowl.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 16, 2020 at 11:30 pm

Clijsters beat Kenin too. Kimmy is back. Jen Brady looks really good. Sock beat Sandgren.

  • JohnnyTD · July 16, 2020 at 11:51 pm

I checked out Fruhvirtova vs Hannah Read, she hits very well, lots of easy power and great technique. No wonder she beat Siniakova.

Talking of the Orange Bowl, Sam seems to like Györe (Djere), he won the Orange Bowl, like many great players before him.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 17, 2020 at 9:52 am

A 13 year old beating an elite WTA pro is major major news. Like young Hingis and Capriati making headline making results at 14. Hopefully they will manage this girl’s progress carefully. There is another Fruhvirtova, older by a year or two, Linda, also an elite junior.

  • Jon King · July 17, 2020 at 11:05 am

Hi Scoop. Quick check in, hope all is well. Lets put our predictions on the record and check back in in 6 months and see who is closer.

Your predictions. Trump landslide, Weiner’s laptop and Maxwell arrest leading to downfall of most elite Democrats.

My predictions. Biden landslide, Weiner’s laptop a big nothing burger, NY state prosecutors get Trump tax returns and indictments come against his inner circle including at least one family member, Maxwell’s information leads a lot closer to Trump’s involvement with Epstein than any other major political figure.

Lets chat the end of the year and see where things stand.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 17, 2020 at 2:50 pm

Hi Jon, welcome back, glad to hear from you.est Tennis season is slowly but surely reviving despite this BS corona with all the fake rigged testing. Epstein is obviously a real evil tragedy, let’s see if they can assassinate Trump and steal the election – don’t count on it. Berman out so the laptop can be used as evidence. Hilary lost her appeal so she has to testify on 9-9. Not looking good for your side right now. Trump banned pedofile epstein from Mar A Lago after he groped a minor. You’re hopes that Trump was involved in Epstein pedofile blackmail is more grasping for straws.

  • Sam · July 18, 2020 at 2:40 am

    “^NYT is a joke.”

But not a very funny one. 😉

    “the american nationals”

    What’s the American nationals?

“This funny Djokovic article cheered me up though 😀”

It’s kind of a hit job, but funny in a pathetic sort of way. What country is Sportskeeda run out of?

Well, Djokovic really needs to be more careful about who he’s seen in public with. On the other hand, I noticed that he hasn’t made any new Instagram posts in about 3 weeks. That’s probably a smart move.

  • Sam · July 18, 2020 at 2:43 am

“Talking of the Orange Bowl, Sam seems to like Györe (Djere), he won the Orange Bowl, like many great players before him.”

It seems that Djere won it shortly after the death of his mom too. I feel so sorry for him and his sister—having to lose their parents so young. 🙁

Although his game seems rather limited on other surfaces, he does show a lot of promise on clay.

  • JohnnyTD · July 18, 2020 at 6:50 am

    “What’s the American nationals?”

tennis event for Americans and canadians

“What country is Sportskeeda run out of?”

India. Most Indian tennis fans are big Fedtards. Except Start da Game 😂

“Although his game seems rather limited on other surfaces, he does show a lot of promise on clay.”

He’ll be fine on other surfaces too, the problem is that after his breakthrough more real life problems were holding him back, he couldn’t even compete enough on fast surfaces.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 18, 2020 at 8:33 am

Djokovic is laying low in hiding since he supposedly tested positive for corona. The media crucified him for his Adria Tour. Still waiting for Anonymous to make his “earth shattering” reveal. Djokovic resumed practicing this week in Serbia …on hard courts.

  • Sam · July 20, 2020 at 6:26 pm

“India. Most Indian tennis fans are big Fedtards.”

    I see.

    “Except Start da Game 😂”

    Who is that?

“after his breakthrough more real life problems were holding him back, he couldn’t even compete enough on fast surfaces.”

That’s too bad. And no one should ever have to lose both parents by the time they reach their early 20s. 🙁

  • Sam · July 20, 2020 at 6:27 pm

“Djokovic is laying low in hiding since he supposedly tested positive for corona.”

    Smart.

“Still waiting for Anonymous to make his ‘earth shattering’ reveal.”

    Same here.

“Djokovic resumed practicing this week in Serbia …on hard courts.”

    Good for him.

  • JohnnyTD · July 21, 2020 at 12:54 am

    “Who is that?”

He’s a legendary Rafa fan with epic threads like the one about how Rafa lost some match at the coin toss 🤣

  • Sam · July 23, 2020 at 12:28 am

“He’s a legendary Rafa fan with epic threads like the one about how Rafa lost some match at the coin toss 🤣”

    Sounds pretty emotional. 😉

So not many other Indians are fans of Nadal? What about Djokovic?

  • Sam · July 23, 2020 at 2:00 am

Oh, speaking of Djere, this is kind of funny. Yesterday, he posted to Instagram that one key to life is to always “follow through.” And then shortly afterward, he retired from his match with Krajinovic. How’s that for irony??? 😉

Of course, if you’re so sick or injured that you can’t keep playing, it’s OK to retire. But does anybody ever retired when they’re ahead???

  • JohnnyTD · July 23, 2020 at 1:41 pm

“So not many other Indians are fans of Nadal? What about Djokovic?”

I heard from Start da Game that most Indians are Fed fans, also their commentators. He complained a lot about Indian commentators making “erotic sounds” when commenting Fed matches. He seemed to like Djokovic too but he was a Nadal fanatic. Clay Death is also a big Nadal fan, actually both these guys said that they were the biggest Nadal fans 😀

“Oh, speaking of Djere, this is kind of funny. Yesterday, he posted to Instagram that one key to life is to always “follow through.” And then shortly afterward, he retired from his match with Krajinovic. How’s that for irony??? 😉

Djere is big friends with other Serbian players, imo he tanked the match.

  • Sam · July 25, 2020 at 12:04 am

“I heard from Start da Game that most Indians are Fed fans, also their commentators.”

On what forum did you meet this guy?

“He complained a lot about Indian commentators making ‘erotic sounds’ when commenting Fed matches.”

    LOL.

“Clay Death is also a big Nadal fan, actually both these guys said that they were the biggest Nadal fans 😀”

I remember Clay Death from MTF. Is he Indian too?

“Djere is big friends with other Serbian players, imo he tanked the match.”

What would be his reason? Well, he needs to stop it with the “follow through” talk then. 😉 How common do you think tanking is among top 100 players?

Speaking of tanking, here’s a very interesting article about Andrea Jaeger. An excerpt:

“Andrea Jaeger . . . . tanked more than a dozen high-profile matches, including the 1983 Wimbledon final . . . and the U.S. Open quarterfinals against Pam Shriver later that summer. . . .

“‘There were times that I could not give my best because it caused a disharmony in me to do so. I gave my best, but not at the cost of hardening my heart, or grieving my soul or wounding my spirit.’ . . .

“She had profound ambivalence about winning. . . .

“In the [’83 U.S.] Open, Jaeger could’ve become No. 1 in the world if she had gotten by Shriver. She did not want to be No. 1. . . .

“‘I did my best according to what I believe to this day that God does approve of: “Be true to who you are in the person I have moulded you to be.”‘”

    https://www.pressreader.com/canada/edmonton-journal/20061214/282677567802653

It’s obvious that Jaeger cared more about people than about winning. Some people would call that mentality weak, but I think it’s very admirable. She’s actually one of the few athletes who I think it would be cool to meet. 🙂

Well, if you ever do interview her, Scoop, please ask her lots of questions about the tanking. 😉

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 25, 2020 at 7:28 am

I will Sam, Jaeger pops up now and then on the pro scene, haven’t heard much about her lately, not sure if she is still involved with her ranch for kids or whatever it was in Colorado, which I remember McEnroe donated to.

  • JohnnyTD · July 25, 2020 at 2:23 pm

    @Sam

Clay Death is from Mississippi, he’s from an Indian family, I met him around 2004 on tennis.com, it used to have an old school forum but they closed it. Start da Game lives in India.

    “Andrea Jaeger”

From what you told about her she must be a very interesting person 😀 That would be an epic biofile for sure.

Well, it looks like this annual event got canceled:

I guess you traveled a long way to meet him then. 😉

“From what you told about her she must be a very interesting person 😀 That would be an epic biofile for sure.”

Indeed. And here’s another interesting article about her. Incidentally, Navratilova sounds really cold and selfish. 😛

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-560743/Why-I-nun-tennis-star-Andrea-Jaeger.html

“‘I think that’s why I struggled so much on the tennis circuit because you have to be selfish to succeed in an individual sport.’ . . .

“‘I didn’t enjoy locker-rooms. I got in trouble at Wimbledon because I’d hang out in the third players’ locker-room when I was supposed to stay in the seeded players’ locker-room but I didn’t like it up there.

“‘Everyone seemed to be happier in the lower players’ locker-room. They weren’t thinking about the semis or the final and weren’t focused just on tennis. They were just happy to be at Wimbledon.’ . . .”

  • JohnnyTD · July 29, 2020 at 7:58 am

“I guess you traveled a long way to meet him then. 😉”

I haven’t met these guys in person, from the tennis forums i met only Betty. We also have plans to meet Mimi and Diana. Mimi sent us mooncakes and other things from Hong Kong, my gaming buddy Mildren also sent Mimi gifts, like that acid resistant steel plaque for example. Mimi also sent gifts to Mildren.

Haha i can empathize with Andrea. Here til 89 most families didn’t have Bibles and didn’t go to church either, there were communist snitches everywhere and those who went to church couldn’t get into good positions at work, etc.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 29, 2020 at 8:42 am

I noticed that too, all Indians love Federer. I do know one who loves Nadal though, Tom Michael is a big Nadal backer, one of the biggest.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 29, 2020 at 8:42 am

Just sent in a note to Andrea for a Biofile. Fingers crossed…

The other thread got closed, so moving this here: 🙂

“For some works like harvest you need helpers but for pruning it’s impossible to get any qualified or experienced ones, we do that ourselves.”

How many trees do you have?

“Quince is the most expensive and most popular one, it has awesome taste. It’s hard to prepare because the fruit is hard and you have to grind it 3 times.”

I’ve never had quince alcohol, but I’ve cooked the fruit. You generally simmer quince for about 3 hours on the stove, at which point it starts to turn pink.

“I convinced some customers though to buy ‘borpárlat’, like it’s clean, smooth, like Finlandia vodka, and they’re addicted now. But most people want quince or plum.”

Do you have to have a license in order to make alcohol?

    “This is pálinka btw: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1linka

    Looks interesting.

“Their admins were famously bad, many of them weren’t even involved in the community and the games, they were just trolling legit members.”

Did they get paid for their role?

“permabanned members under alt accounts, for example that Bakano guy is a permabanned guy called JolánGagó.”

    Interesting.

“The useful and good members have more pride than that so they don’t even bother.”

Yeah, if I ever get banned from a forum, I kick the place to the curb. 🙂 Free Republic is one of those sites.

“99% of the ditched admins disappear forever because they are so hated by the posters by the time they got ripe for the change.”

Can’t they just change their names?

“and google made it even worse for forums this year.”

    How so?

  • JohnnyTD · August 2, 2020 at 6:06 am

“How many trees do you have?”

    I don’t know exactly, hundreds.

“I’ve never had quince alcohol, but I’ve cooked the fruit. You generally simmer quince for about 3 hours on the stove, at which point it starts to turn pink.”

My mom also cooks some 😀

“Do you have to have a license in order to make alcohol?”

Since we have the Orbán government you can make home-made one without a license 😀 With equipment like this: https://www.palinkafozo.org/sites/default/files/field/image/Palinkafozes.com-112_0.jpg They know how to catch voters 😉

However, we take our fruit to a brewery cause we are not able to handle those quantities with a little machine like that.

“Did they get paid for their role?”

Imo no. From what i read on adminzone on some vs forums in the early days some admins were paid, but i haven’t heard anything like that about mtf.

“Yeah, if I ever get banned from a forum, I kick the place to the curb. 🙂 Free Republic is one of those sites.”

This was the first time i heard about that site, i checked it out and a google link took me to this urbandictionary entry, looks like others had bad experiences too 😉 :

“Last year I posted my reflections on the Iraq war on the “free republic” website. First, the war rationale was based on lies. Second, the goals of the Bush administration were: To find and destroy weapons of mass destruction, to save the lives of Americans, to oust Saddam Hussein, to turn Iraq into a free democracy, to stabilise the Middle East, and to keep oil prices low. I politely pointed out that the Bush administration had achieved only one of these goals, the ousting of Saddam Hussein, and that they had failed (and still do) quite miserably in the pursuit of all those other goals.

The free republic operators then politely and silently removed all of my posts (even those not related to the topic) and closed my account. Truth hurts, baby. Not that I am surprised.
“Hey, why don’t you use Windows Media Player? It’s free!” – “You mean free as in free speech?” – “No, dude, free as in free republic!””

  • Sam · August 7, 2020 at 4:34 am

    “I don’t know exactly, hundreds.”

Well, how would you ever know if somebody stole one? 😉

“My mom also cooks some 😀”

They can be very tasty. I’ve planted a couple of fruiting quince trees too, but they don’t grow well in my area. They flower well in the spring, but always pick up a disease called cedar-quince rust. 🙁 I guess they’re only meant to grow in Europe. In our grocery stores, you can only find quinces (occasionally) starting late October until early December. They’re also very expensive! I always peel them, since you can’t find organic ones.

“Since we have the Orbán government you can make home-made one without a license 😀 With equipment like this: https://www.palinkafozo.org/sites/default/files/field/image/Palinkafozes.com-112_0.jpg They know how to catch voters 😉”

Guess I’ll have to order one of those. 😉

“However, we take our fruit to a brewery cause we are not able to handle those quantities with a little machine like that.”

You’d probably have to buy a bunch of them.

“Imo no. From what i read on adminzone on some vs forums in the early days some admins were paid, but i haven’t heard anything like that about mtf.”

That’s interesting—I don’t understand why you’d become an admin then. Maybe it’s a power trip.

“This was the first time i heard about that site”

Really? It’s a popular conservative Web site.

“i checked it out and a google link took me to this urbandictionary entry, looks like others had bad experiences too 😉 :”

Funny, thanks for posting that—I had no idea there was an entry on Urban Dictionary. The guy who posted that probably created a brand new account there, so I can maybe understand why he got banned. In my case, it was completely different. I had been posting there (off and on) for over 7 years, and had never even been given a WARNING. Then all of a sudden I got banned. The reason given?? “Troll.” 😛 It was totally ridiculous.

I think they banned me for suggesting that Donald Trump may have had a consensual relationship with E. Jean Carroll. She claimed that he raped her, which I’m skeptical of. However, I think they may have groped each other consensually in a dressing room in that New York City department store. But Trump claimed that he never even knew the woman. However, I also posted a picture from 1987 of him with Carroll, who was very attractive at the time. So, if they posed for a picture together, it’s hard to believe that he now has no idea who she is. 😉 Anyway, can you believe that they would ban you for something so mild???

There are actually a lot of intelligent posters over on Free Republic, but the admins obviously need professional help. 😉

Here’s one thing I’ve learned: If you ever get banned but actually did nothing wrong, then they’re doing you a FAVOR. 🙂

  • JohnnyTD · August 8, 2020 at 3:44 am

Maybe it was a new admin. It often happens on mainstream forums that a new admin comes who doesn’t know who the core members are and bans them, i saw that phenomenon on all kinds of mainstream forums. It’s plain stupid to ban people who have been members for 7 years.

And they did it despite your being a Trump supporter, i bet that clueless admin didn’t even know that.

You know one thing that Trump and Trump supporters could do better is relax a bit. It’s not good for example that Trump is worrying about what the liberal media would say if he slipped on that slope at westpoint? and other little things.

Orban is considered a dictator by western europe for example, one thing he does better than Trump is that he’s clowning and joking lot, on the surface he doesn’t take himself too seriously and just laughs off all kinds of trolling and mocking. He has all kinds of legendary bs like he has dakota and other “exotic” sayings for everything. Meanwhile he controls everything with iron fists.
