Super Sunday Scoops

mesonGilles Simon is now 5-1 vs Ciic adding the latest win on grandstand tonight – a three set 6-3 in the third thriller. A huge Gillou fan was sitting next to me and he said Simon has had tough luck in majors – losing in five to Cilic (only loss to the Croatian) the year Cilic won the US Open. Also Simon lost in five to Del Potro the year Juan won the US Open. I wouldn’t have thought Gilles was superior to Cilic as he’s not as big and strong but the super fan said Gillou is “smarter.” Simon has beaten Federer (the first two times they played) and Nadal and also has a win over Djokovic the first time they played but Djokovic has won the next ten straight including a five setter this year in Australia. So one has to consider Simon as a possible shock major winner because of his 5-1 mastery of a major title champion… I was told by a source that a former superstar famous ATP no1 stiffed his coach Peter Lundgren out of a million dollar bonus that was in his contract by firing him two weeks before he became no1. The coach was due to earn a million bucks if/when the player ever achieved the no 1 ranking. Then another Aussie great did the same thing to Darren Cahill… Is Rick Leach the best doubles coach in the world? He coached Leander Paes for years but no more this year and now Paes is ranked around 70 and just outside of main draws. Leach also helped Scott Lipsky for a few weeks in Newport Beach a few years ago and then Lipsky went to the French Open and won the mixed as a result. After winning Lipsky went back to LA and voluntarily gave Leach a reward check of $5000 saying that he never would have won that major title without Leach’s advices. Talk about voluntary generosity… Ran into ex Argentine top tenner Alberto Mancini who is coaching Pablo Cuevas and he shared his Facing McEnroe memories which were fantastic… A nice French photographer had two of her cameras stolen off her desk in the media center while she was eathing lunch at the cafe about 30 yards away. It’s horrific because she’s such a nice hard working woman and the person who stole it had to be another press person because the criminal got into the media center (you can’t enter without a credential) and knew how to dislodge the lenses off both cameras. One of the managers told me earlier in the week that a couple of laptops were stolen years ago but since then to today it’s been pretty safe. Earlier in the week I left my fedora over night at my desk and the next morning it was gone – but someone brought it to the main desk and I got the fedora back in the afternoon when another reporter told me where it was. I had thought it was stolen. Just hope the catch this crook because it’s a bad representation fo America and also it’s just terrible for this hard-working woman to have to endure this … Dominic Thiem had a routine win over Nishioka and boy is he fun to watch. He gave two quick thumbs up signs to Nishioka after a successful drop shot off a drop shot and a crazy southpaw backhand pass. Thiem is looking more awesome every time I see him. Next up his Djokovic and about that match up Thiem said he knows Djokovic is far and away the best player in the world but he himself is also feeling the best he’s ever felt on court and he will not lay down for the world no 1 he will give the best fight he possibly can. Boris Becker is well aware of Thiem as they had the same coach (Gunter Bresnik) but Becker said to a German journalist (who relayed the quotes to me) that he sees greatness in Thiem in about four years he will be top four in the world but right now Djokovic still has a lot to give to tennis and will continue to dominate for years but after Djokovic Becker sees Thiem as one of the four players who will be on the top of tennis. Thiem has already played Djokovic once and this will be there second meeting… For tons of photos of today including Nick Kyrgios and a dog at his practice and Benoit Paire walking with his girl friend after practice before losing 63 60 to Gasquet go to the Tennis Prose Facebook page…

Scoop, you look pretty formidable in that picture. Do other journos have to come over and kiss your pinky ring before writing their stories? Doesn’t surprise me that players, even no. 1’s, would stiff a coach for a bonus. I think the coaching ranks must be very wary of how quickly they can get the heave-ho.

Murray-Dimi and Sock-Raonic should be good today. Maybe no surprise with Paes, the guy is 42 and he doesn’t seem to have a good partner anymore.

Paes is going through trying a lot of partners but not sticking with one or not getting the desired results – it’s hard to find a good partner as they are all taken – Nestor has now latched on with Stepanek – Saw Dimitrov yesterday leave the site he got into a big white Porsche Panarama by himself – before he finally climbed in he stood there and fiddled with his phone – almost a kind of to be seen kind of air – no coach no friend girl – just Super G leaving by himself in the big white Porsche – also saw Serena’s coach Patrick and hitting Partner Robby and the chubby other guy playing King of the court on a practice court around five at night – that guy Patrick is an iron man he stayed on one end and never stopped while the other two alternated – Robby hits the ball hard and the chubby guy is very good for having a big belly –

Sock and Smyczek in round of 32. Dimitrov…no wonder this guy doesn’t advance through a tournament draw anymore.
