Fernando Verdasco defeated again by Taylor Fritz 76 67 64. The 35 year old is ranked 12 spots lower at 41 than the 29 ranked 21 year old. Fritz also beat Verdasco 76 in the third in Indian Wells this year. Verdasco won their first duel in 2016 in Winston Salem 62 in the third.

Fabio Fognini routs Sam Querrey 64 62, their first match since 2014 Australian Open, also won by Fognini in three sets.

Vasek Pospisil scored one of this best wins of the year, beating Diego Schwartzman, 14 seed, in three sets.

Wildcard Andy Murray beat qualifier Juan Ignacio Londero in three sets, another important singles step for the comebacking 2016 Shanghai champ. Murray will face Fognini in the second round, a tricky match up as Murray leads the head to head 4-3.

Marin Cilic continues to fall down the rankings, he lost to Albert Ramos Vinolas 64 64. At the start of 2018, Cilic was ranked no. 3, now he’s 25. Vinolas draws Federer next, who he beat in Shanghai in 2015 in three sets. Fed and Vinolas are 1-1 career head to head.

Denis Shapovalov bested Frances Tiafoe again 64 62, duplicating a three set win in Miami earlier this year. Tiafoe won their initial meeting two years ago in Delray Beach.

    This seems like the appropriate thread. Pospisil vs Sousa had about 2 dozen fans, and I am not exaggerating, you could count them! Fed’s match and also Andy’s were on at the same time, so those must have been hardcore fans of either Vasek or Sousa.

    After Vasek won in SS, all the fans moved down to the front row and Vashy threw things, including all the white towels, to them. I think nearly every fan got something. 🙂
