In late 2023, the Italian tennis player Marco Bortolotti tested positive for clostebol following a match in Lisbon. Similar to the initial ruling in Jannik Sinner’s case, an independent tribunal determined that Bortolotti bore “No Fault or Negligence.” The panel accepted his explanation that the substance entered his system through unintentional contamination, resulting in no period of ineligibility (no suspension).

Matt I never heard of this player and never saw his name anywhere. Did he even ever play any Challengers? It’s weird how they catch these guys nobody has ever heard of. I even wonder if some of these players even exist and are not some fabricated phony identity pawns to make the testing system look tough.

I was listening to Greg Rudesky’s podcast and he had the bad of tennis testing, and she mentioned Bortolotti ‘s car. I am just saying that happened a year before Sinner and I believe the colbesterol is in products like neosporin in Italy.
It’s not as cool as Gasquet’s case but to say it’s unfair is not true.
Unfair is the suspensions.

Matt, these drug ban cases with mystery players is a pattern. Nobody in top 100 seems to get nabbed. Where is Jordan Thompson? Hasn’t played since losing in four sets to Borges at AO. He is connected to Purcell (his doubles partner) and Matosevic, both involved with PEDs. But no news about it.

Botolotti is 35 years old and has played one pro match in four years and his career high ranking 355 was a decade ago. It appears the machine sacrificed a pawn to make it look like Italian players are not above being caught and banned. This looks like a set up for optics.
