Scoop’s Roland Garros Notebook

Daniil Medvedev was not a happy camper after losing Cam Norrie in the first round at Roland Garros in five sets: “Honestly, man…I might skip the clay season next year. F–k clay.”

So Coco Gauff walked on court for her match vs. Olivia Gadecki but supposedly forgot her Head racquets. Sounds like another publicity stunt for media attention. Manipulating the media to talk about what she wants the to talk about. There was one incident of a player forgetting his/her racquet. In the Biofile interview, Frank Dancevic told me he was so engaged in a marathon pro match battle that he walked out to the baseline after a changeover empty-handed, he had forgotten to pick up his Wilson racquet.

Once again players are complaining that not enough women players are being allowed to play the night match on Chatrier. Ons Jabeur mentioned it when asked by the media which is provoking the issue: “It’s unfortunate for women’s sports in general. Not just for tennis, but in general. I hope whoever is making the decision.. I don’t think they have daughters. I don’t think they wanna treat their daughters like this. It’s a bit ironic, you know. They don’t show women’s sport. They don’t show women’s tennis. Then they ask a question. Yeah, but mostly they watch men. Of course they watch men more, because you show men more. Everything goes together. It’s a shame from the federation. It’s a shame from prime TV that they made such a contract like this. A lot of great players deserve to be there. One of the matches was Naomi and Paula. Such an unbelievable match. They were supposed to be there. Iga and Naomi last year were supposed to be there. A lot of great matches that should’ve been there. Not sure what kind of fans he’s talking about. I know I’m a fan, I would watch that match.”

I said in Miami that Fonseca is now a big stadium player after seeing how he packed the stadium vs. Learner Tien. Every one of his matches needs to be in the main stadium because he’s a superstar attraction who magnetizes the masses to come watch. French Open messed up. Witness in Paris: “Unreal scenes for Hurkacz vs Fonseca. Hundreds queuing around the court just to get in. How was this match not scheduled on a bigger court?” Fonseca won the first set 6-2 vs the Geneva runner up.

Grigor Dimitrov lost today to Ethan Quinn after winning the first two sets 62 62 and losing the third. He has now retired in his last four Grand Slams, Wimbledon and US Open 2024 and Australian and French Open 2025. A bizarre record but not as odd as Peter Polansky Lucky Losering into all four Grand Slams.

Federico Gomez got a big break after losing third round of qualies, he then LLed into the main draw today and won his first ever Grand Slam main draw match in four sets vs Kovacevic. Novak Djokovic reached out to help him in Miami shortly after he revealed his depression issues due to his stagnated, struggling pro tennis career. Djokovic was asked about 28 year old Gomez’s big win today: “I’m very happy for him because he’s a very nice person. He’s a player who fights a lot. It’s fantastic that he won.”

Fonseca routined Hurkacz 62 64 62. This is the kind of quality win over a dangerous seed that could cause one to get the idea that perhaps a second Brazilian major underdog can shock the world like Mr Kuerten, and win a French Open against all odds.

Nice Gomez story, hopefully he can build on this.

Arnaldi also coming through in five over FAA. Norrie celebrated his win over Meddy like he won the tournament.

Well it was a very important win for the ranking plummeting Norrie. It proves to him that he’s still a top 10 player and can play top ten tennis. Felix is a journeyman now. Armaldi, Navone and Bellucci are rising stars. Gomez could be too.
