Roland Garros News & Notes

Sam Querrey is broadcasting for the TNT Network and he revealed Tommy Paul is the most popular player in the locker room.

If Casper Ruud really has a knee injury why would he play two losing sets 06 16 on it to Nuno Borges and risk further damage?

Witness: “Thousands of fans are requesting refunds after Roland Garros scheduled Keys/Boulter on Philippe-Chatrier instead of Djokovic/Moutet.

After their early losses at Roland Garros, Taylor Fritz will likely leave the Top 5 – Casper Ruud will leave the Top 10 – Daniil Medvedev will leave the Top 10 – Stefanos Tsitsipas will leave the Top 20.

Gilles Moretton of the FTF and Amelie Mauresmo, the French Open tournament director, presented Novak Djokovic with two trophy cup awards for winning his 100th ATP title in Geneva on his 38th birthday. However the presentation happened in some hallway in the stadium, not on the court for public viewing. Odd. We never saw Federer or Nadal being given awards in some hallway without media or photographers present.

Rybakina vs Ostapenko is a WTA blockbuster but it will not be on Chatrier today but Court Suzanne Lenglen. Paolini vs Stardodubtseva will be played on Chatrier though. Hmmm.

Iga Swiatek’s blowout of Emma Raducanu played on Chatrier looked about 80 percent empty.

Upset City: 21 year old qualifier Henrique Rocha of Portugal, ranked no. 200 in the world, came back from two sets down to beat world no. 19 Jakub Mensik 26 16 64 63 63 and reach the 3rd round of Roland Garros. This is Rocha’s Grand Slam main draw debut.

Comeback City: After leading by two sets to love, Arthur Fils roars back from 1-3 down and 4-4 0-40 in the fifth set to survive Jaume Munar 76(3) 76(3) 26 06 64 and reach the third round at Roland Garros for the first time. The match lasted four hours and 25 minutes.

Gasquet has played the big 3 53 times. Today he plays Sinner and is down 36 after first set.

23 year old American Hailey Baptiste is into her first GS 3R with a win today vs. Nao Hibino 6362. This is her 8th GS main draw starting at 2020 US Open.

At age 9 Gasquet was featured on the cover of Tenis magazine, “The Champion That France Is Waiting For?” Under that enormous pressure since age 9 it’s a miracle he even had a pro career, or one that lasted almost 25 years.

Loved the Gasquet send-off today. Very classy. Interestinly, Federer did not appear in the farwell video from his famous friends. His old friend Rafa featured prominently in the video. Rafa was the only top player to back him publicly during his coke scandal. The parting gift of the Roland Garros clay and gravel layers was just perfect –can I get one too?

He showcased his serve & volley, his feathery drop shots & touch and the famous backhand throughout the match. Great stuff.

The French gave a great effort all around today. Moutet played astoundingly well against Djokovic and Herbert gave Fonseca everything he could handle.

Now I have to hunt for the Bublik/De Minaur highlights. 🙂

Steve, I saw some of it, yes it was surprising that Federer did not participate and it makes you wonder why not. The emphasis by all the players was on the backhand and his long career and only Djokovic touched on his sportsmanship, humility and respect. My lasting memory of Gasquet is how he was just a pure total tennis player, never let emotions or ego or mind games infiltrate his performance. He never once had any kind of dispute or confrontation with any player, to my knowledge. Always perfectly behaved. The ATP Sportsmanship Award should be renamed in his honor IMO or shared with Edberg. Djokovic is the ultimate champion. Nadal was the ultimate competitive machine. Federer was the symbol of tennis artistry and perfection until Nadal and Djokovic came and knocked him off. Gasquet was the most pure total tennis player I ever saw. No nonsense, no BS, no mind games, no fake injury drama, no trickery, no arguments with officials or opponents, just 100 percent total love for playing the game and trying his best.

Yeah, Scoop, everyone that I know that have media access that met him all said he was extremely kind and perhaps the most soft spoken/shy athlete they ever talked to or interviewed of any sport.

His style was such that he could clearly fit in perfectly in the long pants/wood racquet days of tennis we see in black & white film footage when the players played a more nuanced & tasteful game.

In his book his main exchange with Federer outside of competing was that Federer once hooked him up with a jersey of one of his favorite soccer players. Apparently Federer used to send such jerseys to different players or perhaps he instructs his management to do it. I can’t remember if they are signed by the athletes or not.

It was nice of Djokovic to mention Gasquet’s humility.

Gasquet is a gentleman, lucky to interview him a few times, very polite and well mannered for a seemingly shy introvert type. Do you remember when Monfils said Gasquet didn’t like to play on big stadiums with big crowds? I don’t think he really liked the superstar centerstage aspect of big time pro tennis, just the actual playing part. I don’t think he really cared about winning major titles or being the best, he just loved to play at the highest level.

Gasquet sure does look like a throwback player from the 1930s in his style and mannerisms, he fits right into photos with Tilden, Budge, Lacoste, and von Cramm. Maybe he was born into the wrong era.

Djokovic has the best and smartest most original observations and compliments about Gasquet. All the rest sounded like parrots.

I read somewhere that a Spanish player was complaining about NOrrie’s on-court behaviour, specificly he was getting bothered by Norrie shouting VAMOS! after winning points.

I was watching him a few weeks ago and, yes, he was shouting VAMOS and he wasn’t even playing a Spaniard. Did he train in Spain or is the Brit from South Africa a Nadal fanaatic?

  • Scoop Malinowski · May 31, 2025 at 7:10 pm

Whatever he yells in whatever language should not bother any opponent of Norrie, they should only be focused on their side of the net. I’ve seen players yell vamos, cmon, allaiz, and it was not their native language. Anybody whining about Norrie’s language choices is a whiner.
