Random Observations and Notes This Week

scoopten2Love the Houston event as it’s a player favorite and ATP guru Greg Sharko always praises this event and the wonderful venue … Victor Estrella Burgos played Herculean tennis to force Hyeon Chung to three sets in action yesterday but Chung finally finished off the Dominican dynamo 6-0 in the third after blowing a match point in the second … Chung is now wearing Lacoste attire instead of Le Coq Sportif which he had worn for a couple of years … Tommy Paul and Reilly Opelka won their first ATP doubles match by beating Nick Monroe and Neil Skupski in a super tiebreaker with Paul showing incredible court coverage and magic touch … Opelka is in the main draw as a LL for injured Dustin Brown and plays Querrey today … Guess who won the Miami Open Bud Collins hackers media tournament? Here’s the press release: The Miami Open has named its annual media tennis tournament The Bud Collins Memorial Media Tennis Tournament after the beloved journalist, broadcaster and historian who organized the tournament’s first “Media Hackers Open” in the early years of the event. Seventeen players turned out for the 2016 event on Saturday that preceded the women’s final between Victoria Azarenka and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Scoop Malinowski (Tennis-Prose) took first place in the competition, with Felix Perez-Suarez (Teenis) second and Maurico Paiz (Rackets ’N Golf) coming in third. A plaque commemorating the new tournament name was unveiled by media director Sam Henderson and will be displayed perpetually in the media center with the winner’s name added each year.

Scoop, you the man, who’d you have to beat to take home the winner’s trophy?

    Scoop –
Your praise of Houston (and the wealthy area and picturesque traditional surroundings) is a reminder of Gladys Heldman and her moving the old World Tennis there from NY back in the 70s – a great magazine in a time long gone.

And even in these more democratic days the Houston style still has its pull – as you say players love it and I think it was last year there that Chung first really showed himself. A writer on ‘another site’ analysed his game. I’ve followed him ever since (Chung I mean)

Tommy Paul vs. Hyung Chung. Paul dismissed Lorenzi – solid win.

In Paul, likely have a player that looks FORWARD to the French Open. That hasn’t been the case for a while. U.S. players tend to be allergic to clay (even if they can win Houston), though Isner likes the dirt.

I think that’s why the newest crop of U.S. players is unique – it’s beating established, ATP regulars on a monthly basis.

Catherine: I have never been to the great state of Texas but Greg Sharko has expressed high HIGH praise of the tourney – Chung’s breakout was actually in miami last year – I saw him give Granollers a first set bagel on court two then beat him in three sets – Granollers is one of the hardest working feistiest and best competitors on the ATP Tour – for Chung to just blitz a veteran like Granollers like that bagel showed me he is the real deal – also remember chatting with Reilly Opelka about Chung and he said he’s always been good – made finals or won junior Wimbledon –
