Rafa and Nole Are Passing By Roger

Today Rafael Nadal dominated Roger Federer in the French Open semifinal 63 64 62. The loss for Federer proves again that both Djokovic and Nadal have passed him, particularly in majors.

Federer is now an abysmal 9-19 vs Nadal and Djokovic in Grand Slams. That’s a devastating statistic.

If you do the math and combine, Federer can’t claim a positive head to head at any majors vs Djokovic and Rafa.

Australian Open: 2-6 (1-3 against Rafa, 1-3 against Djokovic)
Roland Garros: 1-7 (0-6 against Rafa, 1-1 against Djokovic)
Wimbledon: 3-3 (2-1 against Rafa, 1-2 against Djokovic)
US Open: 3-3 (no match against Rafa, 3-3 against Djokovic)

The longer Federer continues to compete on the ATP Tour, the disparity of these major head to heads will expand wider and wider.

Which will weaken the position that Federer is the greatest of all time.

Oh, I understand now, you were making fun of the reporters. I am glad to hear that because, as I said, I thought she looked to be a similar height to Evert, and wondered how I got that wrong.

Knowing your interest in Kerber, here is a link to a letter she wrote to Steffi Graf. it is quite long.

“Tennis – Germany’s Angelique Kerber has wished fellow German and 22-time Grand Slam champion Steffi Graf ahead of her 50th birthday. The German legend turns 50 on Friday and Kerber wrote a heartfelt letter to Graf on Bild for the occasion.” (Tennis World)

Scoop, I was interested to hear how Evert influenced you to follow tennis.

There is a book about the rivalry between Chris and Martina, and their friendship. The two women were interviewed after they had retired and I remember Chris saying that she did not like the “goody two shoes” image the press created about her, and that it was far from accurate.

Hartt, Evert was the first famous person I ever met or saw and she was super kind and it made me like her instantly. Then naturally later the chance to see her play on TV created a fascination with the sport.

Hartt – thanks for the link. Bild is a big circulation German tabloid and the letter is a translation I presume. Very generous and heartfelt of Angie – I imagine she was asked for a comment as the top German player and chose this form, which seems appropriate. She’s often mentioned Steffi as her early inspiration although their games are quite different. Did you know Angie grew up living above a tennis/sports centre ? Good way to start.

I really hope she’s over her injury and can make the most of the remainder of the season – it’s been a fairly bumpy ride in parts so far.

Re Chris – no, of course she wasn’t ‘goody two shoes’ but that image suited the press at the time. A few years ago, after her divorce, she gave a fairly frank interview in Elle magazine, putting a lot of her life in perspective. The pressure she faced growing up as a player, from the time she was 15 or so, was enormous.
