Priscilla Hon Saves Five Match Points To Qualify For Wimbledon

27 year old Priscilla Hon has never played a Wimbledon main draw and yesterday was on path to extend the trend as she was down three match points 46 56 and love-40 to Canadian teen Victoria Mboko.

But the Australian veteran amazingly ended up saving five match points and survived Mboko to reach her first Wimbledon main draw.

On the first match point down serving at love-40, Hon attacked with an aggressive forehand cross court and then converted a forehand volley winner… then Hon hit two backhands down the middle provoking Mboko to miss a backhand wide… then a daring swing volley off a big serve to Mboko’s forehand ended up in the net by the teen prodigy… Two more match points… a service winner… then a lunging backhand volley winner dropper off a Mboko laser beam backhand cross court pass.

Hon then won the second set tiebreaker and finished the job in the third set with a serve and volley, a bold, firm forehand volley which Mboko’s attempted pass went wide. It was an incredible win for Hon, who is coached by former doubles no. 1 Cara Black. The final scoreline was 46 76 (4) 61.

This was Hon’s seventh attempt in Wimbledon qualifying.

“It’s huge to finally get into the main draw,” said the WTA world no. 137. “I have no idea how I did that! Apparently, I was down five match points, but I only remember three of them!”

“I was just trying to play point by point. I felt completely out of it. It was my third time in the final (qualifying) round and I thought, ‘Great, it’s happening again’. I’m glad I kept fighting.”

“There really is nothing like Wimbledon, so much tradition, I can’t wait and I’m very excited to play.”

“It helps that my coach is Cara Black, she’s won loads of Slams in doubles and done really well in singles. I’m glad I could execute all she has taught me today.”

Since 2016, Hon has played in seven Grand Slam main draws, only reaching the second round twice, at 2019 French Open and 2020 Australian Open. She will play Ekaterina Alexandrova in her first Wimbledon main draw match.
