Newport Notebook

Chris Eubanks came back from a set down to defeat Harvard prospect wildcard Daniel Milevsky in three sets. “He was serving like Pete Sampras in the first set but then I started to get a feel for my returns.”

Billionaire financier hedge funder Bill Ackman was spotted practicing and then scouting first round opponent in doubles Omar Jasika playing singles. 59 year old Ackman, who will partner with Jack Sock was doing some yoga core stretches while observing Jasika.

Later I asked if he noticed Ackman scouting him and if he was intimidated by it. He replied he did notice the Ackman entourage but wasnt sure he saw Bill dressed in all whites after hitting. He added that Ackman hit the ball well, has nice strokes but wondered about his foot speed, mobility and ability to play in front of a substantial audience. He also asked, “How old is he, 70?” One thing is clear, the billionaire isnt buying Jasika and his partner Bernard Tomic.

Eugenie Bouchard was in control of Ana Rogers at 52 but then lost five games in a row and was downed 75 62. Bouchard had no fire and looked broken in her first WTA duel in over a year. More matches would help her cause but with no ranking, she will need to go to the ITF circuit which probably isnt an option at this stage. I told Genie yesterday she should write a book and she seemed to like the idea.

Arianne Hartono was super aggressive like her heroes Clijsters and Serena in crushing Maria Mateas 6362 and so I gave her a prize for the impressive performance … A book copy of the most aggressive player of all… Facing Monica Seles. She was very grateful by my gesture.

Michael Zheng got a rematch with Bernard Tomic from last year but lost 64 63, blowing break points at 44. Tomic looked as great as ever, in full command of his baseline arsenal of flat forehands, slice backhands, drop shots and penetrating returns. Tomic shouldve been a top ten force.

Top seed and ATP no. 99 Brandon Holt walked by me today as he entered the venue. Earlier in the morning I found a copy of his mom Tracy Austins biography from the 80s by Christine Brennan at a thrift store for two dollars. Brandon said he has not read it but would gladly sign it for me.
