NBO Toronto Masters 1000 Notebook

Looks like Alexander Zverev has added Toni Nadal to his coaching team. Zverev revealed that it was Toni Nadal who made the first contact via a lengthy phone message. “He sent me a very long voice message and then I said, ‘Can we please talk?’ And then we talked on the phone for about an hour and a half,” Zverev told ATPTour.com. “It was such a nice conversation. It was about tennis, it was about life, it was about everything… The time (ten days) in Mallorca was amazing. I’m trying to convince him to do more weeks with me, and we’ll see how it goes, but he’s a very busy man. Also he has a lot of dates that he already committed to this year, so I’m not sure how much of him you’ll see this year.”

There is still the possibility it’s more of a business marketing collaboration to help Nadal Academy promote itself by connecting with an elite player, as the Filipina Alex Eala still hasn’t quite yet panned out.

Zverev sounds like he found the greatest coach of his life: “He has a personality that I think can give you a lot of confidence as well, because when he speaks and when Rafa speaks, you listen. Yeah, they definitely spent a lot of hours talking to me, and they gave me some great insight. Rafa gave me some great insight of what it actually is like to play against me, because he saw me as a player, he saw me now as a spectator as well. It was very helpful, and again, we spent hours and hours talking, sometimes until past midnight in some dinners and stuff like that. So it was great to be there.”

“I think at this stage for me it’s about winning, and trying to maximise what I have, and trying to maximise what I can become,” Zverev said. “Again, I think my team, but also Toni, are exceptional in that, in maximising what a player has. Of course, he was with Rafa before — which, I’m never going to compare myself to Rafa — but if he can maximize what I have, and he can maximize the potential that I have, I’m sure that I can have a lot more success in my career.”

Top seed Zverev opens against Adam Walton in 2R.

35 year old wildcard Vasek Pospisil played his final ATP match yesterday against Facundo Bagnis, losing 62 36 63 to the qualifier from Argentina. Pospisil was ranked a career high 25 in the world in 2014. He turned pro in 2007.

American Ethan Quinn, ranked 86, beat Yoshihito Nishioka 76 64 for this tenth match win of the year.

Tristan Schoolkate upset Joao Fonseca 76 64. The 24 year old 103 ranked Aussie had never beaten a top 50 player before. Schoolkate now has five match wins on the ATP World Tour. He turned pro in 2019.

Holger Rune will need all the advices Andre Agassi gave him in Washington DC as his first opponent in Canada will be the man who beat him in Basel 64 76, Giovanni Mpetchi Perricard.

Reilly Opelka opened Toronto with a 75 76 win vs Sebastian Ofner. Opelka is coached by Denis Kudla.

Neither Carlos, Sinner or Djokovic has elected to play this year’s Canadian Open.

Nicholas Arsenault In his first career ATP Tour match, knocked out no. 111 Royer for his first ATP tour-level win. The 636th ranked Kentucky Wildcard will advance to the 2R vs Popyrin.

Bouchard looked fantastic tonight in MTL beating Arango who is an excellent athlete. Very well played by both, high level tennis, Bouchard really really wanted this one and got the job done. Bouchard looked awful losing in Newport to Anna Rogers from 52 up in the first but she was much better tonight. She actually looked like a top 30 player tonight. She really had the fire tonight, which was totally lacking in Newport. Bencic will be tough task in 2R though.

Bouchard said if she wins the title retirement is off.
