Nakashima, Isner Advance To Roland Garros 3R

Brandon Nakashima defeated Tallon Griekspoor 76 64 62 to advance to his first Grand Slam third round. The 20 year old, ranked 75, has been somewhat forgotten as a rising young American in part due to the flashy successes of Sebi Korda and Jenson Brooksby, and his own recent, average results, but the Californian’s overdue anticipated breakout may be about to happen.

Nakashima is 29-24 in his ATP career so far and 9-10 this year. In the third round he will meet world no. 3 Alexander Zverev in a rematch of their 2020 US Open four setter won by the German 75 67 63 61. Zverev had to save a match point today to survive five sets with Sebastian Baez of Argentina.

John Isner has won two four setters in a row vs Quentin Halys 76 46 76 76 and Gregoire Barrere 64 64 36 76 and will next duel 131 ranked Bernabe Zapata Miralles, the conqueror today of 13 seed Taylor Fritz. 25 year old Zapata Miralles has only won 11 ATP Tour matches in his career – Isner, age 37 and ranked 26 now, has won 470 ATP matches and 16 singles titles.

Isner and Nakashima are joined by several other Americans who still remain in the draw – Frances Tiafoe, Korda, Mackenzie McDonald and Steve Johnson.
