Thomas Muster hasn’t won a Grand Slam match since 1998 (French Open) but this week he made a most generous gesture.
The former ATP world number one and 1995 French Open king is auctioning off the trophies from his greatest successes to help people in need, the Generali Open 250 ATP tournament of Kitzbuhel announced.
Muster wants to donate the proceeds from the unique collector’s items to the “Ö3 Weihnachtswunder.”
Muster has a lot of trophies to donate. He won 44 ATP singles titles in his career that spanned from 1985-1999. The tenaciously fierce blond baseline bomber once described by rival Pete Sampras in colorful terms: “You just have to listen to him out there. He sounds like a bulldog who’s chewing on your leg and will not stop chewing, no matter what.”
The left-hander from Liebnitz, Austria may have never won a Wimbledon match on grass (four tries) but he did win 625 matches in his career (273 losses).
Muster will turn 57 on October 2.
