Monfils 0-17 vs. Djokovic, Seeks First Win in Madrid

Gae Monfils has won 11 ATP singles titles and 522 matches and over $20m in the ATP since turning pro in 2004 but he has never beaten Novak Djokovic in seventeen tries.

Today in Madrid, Monfils will play Djokovic for the 18th time. Djokovic is the only player of the Big Four the 35 year old has not beaten – Djokovic (0-17), Roger Federer (4-10), Rafael Nadal (2-14) and Andy Murray (2-4).

Currently ranked 21 in the world, Monfils has an 11-5 record this year. Of his failure to beat Djokovic, Monfils told the ATP site, “The guy is better than me, that is it,” Monfils said of Djokovic on Monday. “Every match is an opportunity to win, I try to take some lessons. He can beat me tomorrow and maybe at Rome and then Roland Garros and then, maybe, I can beat him once.”

The first match the two ever played was a five setter at the US Open 2005 and the score was 75 46 76 06 75.

Actually Monfils does have an ATP win over Djokovic – it happened in 2004 at a Futures in Italy on outdoor clay in the QF, 64 67 62. The dynamic duo’s most recent meeting was 2020 Dubai semis and the score was 26 76 61.

Djokovic wins it, 62 63, now 18-0 vs La Monf. 18-0 vs one player is another unique ATP record Novak now owns.
