Max Purcell has returned to action after serving an 18 month suspension. He has played three $15,000 ITFs in China and Japan starting in June this year when his ban ended.
The former 2022 Wimbledon champion (with Jordan Thompson) won a $15,000 singles title in Wuning, China beating Matt Dellavedova in the final 60 61. But then he retired in the next week’s Wuning ITF in the first round at 35 in the first set with some kind of injury.
Purcell also won both of his ITF doubles titles last month in Wuning and Tokyo $15,000s with different partners. But after the singles retirement in Wuning he hasn’t played since.
The 28 year old who also won a 2024 US Open doubles title was once ranked 40 in singles and no. 8 in doubles has won eight ATP doubles titles.
He is currently ranked 1111 in doubles and 1032 in singles.
On December 23, 2024, it was announced that Purcell was slapped with a provisional suspension by the ITIA (Internationsl Tennis Integrity Agency) effective from December 12, after he admitted violating Article 2.2 of the Tennis Anti-Doping Program “relating to the use of a Prohibited Method.” In an Instagram post, Purcell admitted he had “unknowingly received” an intravenous infusion of vitamins which was above the 100ml limit allowed under WASA (World Anti-Doping Agency) rules. In April 2025, Purcell accepted an 18-month suspension which, taking into account time already served, completed and ended on June 11, 2026.

You are mentioning a story that has been totally forgotten or covered up. Purcell was a top doubles player. Interesting to see if he can regain his peak form after a long ban. Love your Facing Djokovic and Facing Agassi books bro.
