Mari Osaka Retires

Mari Osaka has retired from pro tennis at age 24.

The lesser-known, older sister of Naomi Osaka, was at one time the more accomplished and talented Osaka sister during her teenage years. But Mari Osaka, currently ranked 335 in the world, never managed to establish her own identity in the WTA.

Osaka was given a wildcard into the 2014 Bank of West Classic in doubles but lost first round to Tomljanovic/Lepchenko. She also received a wildcard into the main draw of the 2019 Miami Open but was defeated in the first round by another wildcard Whitney Osuigwe in straight sets.

Mari Osaka reached four ITF pro tournament finals but lost in each (2012 to Jamie Loeb in Amelia Island 36 57; 2017 to Peangtam Pliptuech in Korea 67 06; 2017 France vs Lina Gjorcheska 26 75 67; and 2018 Florence, SC vs Bianca Andreescu 46 62 36.)

Her final pro record in singles stands at 196-162 and her highest ranking was 280 which accumulated just over $90,000 in career prize money.

In a social media statement, Osaka said she did not “ultimately enjoy the sport” and is looking forward to moving on to new projects .
