Dan, I’m curious. What will you do if your son starts yelling at his coach or, Heavens forfend, you? Tennis may be a vicious sport but we all need to draw lines somewhere. For what it’s worth, I’ve seen a couple of top juniors yell at their parents and coaches. They went on to some excellent colleges and now lead perfectly dull lives, I assume. Save for the espisodes of yelling.

Catherine, I did not see much of the men’s matches yesterday, but from the scores the Big 3 all went into dominating mode after the first set. Darren Cahill was very critical of the way Goffin, and other players, tend to stop fighting when a member of the Big 3 starts to turn the match around. He said that they needed to show some fighting spirit even if the score ended up the same. He also said that you couldn’t see the match as a marathon. He thought that at each changeover the player needed to think about the next 2 games and concentrate on winning one of those.

I did watch the mixed doubles between Dabrowski/Pavic and Siegemund/Sitak. It went to a TB at 12-12 in the third, the second match at this Wimby to do so. For those who enjoy conflict, there was plenty of that in this match, largely directed to the officials. And it’s true that there were some bad line calls. Siegemund played very well in the TB and was key to her team winning the match. Gaby and Mate gave their opponents a frost handshake at the net, so there were bad feelings there as well.

Gaby and her partner Xu had won their doubles match earlier in the day, so are in the SFs. As is so often the case, she is the last Canadian player in a big tourney.

I realise this isn’t an a horticultural site, but perhaps someone knows the answer.

What’s with the grass at Wimbledon? It’s clear that players don’t serve and volley much anymore, and that there’s no grass on the baseline after the first week. But look at the spots where the ballkids are standing. Why is there no grass over there? This seems very different from 20 years ago. Much more so that when Borg played 40 years ago. Why the difference? Surely the ballkids aren’t doing anything different now, are they?

Vijay – it’s possibly a different type of grass – or else the ballkids are wearing shoes with extra tough soles 🙂

Yes, the baseline is shorn of grass, but what about where the ballkids stand? Why is that area so devoid of grass? I don’t recall it being like that 20 years ago, and much less so when Borg an co played 40 years ago.

Vijay – your post did go through and my answer is similar to Scoop’s – the grass is different because W’don wants ‘slower tennis’ – so maybe it wears differently.

Serena’s match 6-1 6-2. Not much value for the cost of tickets. Let’s hope the final is a better advertisement for women’s tennis. What was Stryckova doing in a semi anyway ?

BTW- nothing ‘slow’ about Serena’s demolition job – 61 mins of total efficiency. 89% 1st serve pts won; 100% service games won; 100% break points saved; 81% net points won etc. And 942 metres covered v 1098.

Just listened to a podcast w/ Jimmy Arias, head of IMG tennis now..he claims its unworldly what the top 3 are doing, and claimed, they are widening the gap further between them, and the rest. Talks about kids at IMG, that will be joining the tour, doesn’t predict Future #1’s.. I think he’s afraid the top 3 will be killing these kids hopes for 3 or 4 more years.

Dont coaches, and Academies have to be taken to task for not building a new World # 1, over the past 10 years. The top 3, aren’t the same player, each has multiple excellent talents, from a little mechanical Djoko, to free lowing Fed, to Nadal bludgeoning opponents.
Why cant the so called Great Coaches bring along that next guy?

I don’t think Simona will win this year, maybe another year – do a Kerber/Muguruza pattern, runner-up and then winner. Serena just looks too strong. And no Scoop, I don’t expect other players to follow her example in mixed. They just aren’t interested in the extra matches.

What’s the shortest women’s sf ever ? Probably BJK bt Rosie Casals 6-0 6-1 in around 30 mins in 1969. There’ve been some pretty short finals as well. More back in the days of s/v.

Dabrowski/Xu won their SF match against the defending champs, Krejckova and Siniakova, so they will play in their first Slam final. They likely will face Strycova/Hsieh who are up a set and a break in the other SF.

It would be great if Dabrowski/Xu won their first doubles title. They seem to enjoy playing with one another, although occasionally Xu has to fulfil obligations in China, and Gaby has to find another partner for a tourney or two.

Hartt – thanks for this info. We’ll just keep our fingers crossed. From this it seems she won’t be playing Rogers Cup.
