Loco Fabio Wished Bomb Exploded At Wimbledon

Fabio Fognini’s loose cannon behavior reached a new degree of craziness today at Wimbledon.

The hot headed Italian, ranked 10 in the world, thought he had a favorable third round match up today vs. American Tennys Sandgren, a player he won both of their previous ATP meetings with last year on red clay.

But those two wins were very narrow on his best surface and today Sandgren outplayed him on the Wimbledon grass 63 76 63.

Fognini could not contain his frustration at the unexpected turn of events and unleashed a shocking verbal tirade in Italian that was understood by courtside observers. Down two sets, Fognini kicked a ball with his feet before scooping it up with his Babolat racquet and then said perhaps the worst thing any player ever said on a professional tennis court. ‘It’s fair to play here? Damn English, really. Damned, really. Wish a bomb would explode on this club. a bomb should explode here.’

Fognini was displeased about having to play on outer court 14 which he felt the conditions were subpar and contributed to his losing performance.

After the match, when posed with questions about his tirade, Fognini apologized but offered little explanation. The 2019 Monte Carlo champion could face a severe punishment, fine or even ban because he’s already on a two year probation for an incident at 2017 US Open where he called a female official a whore and a ****sucker.

Sandgren advances to his first round of 16 at Wimbledon where he will play compatriot Sam Querrey for a slot in the quarterfinal.

But Tomic has not publicly complained or challenged this fine so maybe he did tank.

Wow! This site turned into a Women’s/250’s/Canadian Tennis site. Men’s quarters at Wimby and not a word? Querrey bashing? Newport’s coming? Nothing. Kozlov won 2 matches😀😀😀

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 10, 2019 at 6:26 pm

Fed beating Kei and Rafa beating Q and Agut beating Pella and Djokovic beating Goffin is exactly noteworthy or remarkable Harold. Perhaps the most noteworthy tennis news of the day was Lloyd Harris hiring X Malisse to be his coach for summer hard court season.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 10, 2019 at 6:27 pm

Yes Kozlov did win two matches and the win vs Maceiras Menendez is big because he was 0-2 vs him.

Federer ready for Rafa on Friday: “Well, we have a lot of information on Rafa, and so does he about us. It’s grass-court tennis and I’m going to come out there and play attacking tennis.’ And if he can defend that, that’s too good. And if he can’t, well, then, that’s good for me.”

Scoop, do you know exactly what Fognini said? It sounded like he was comparing the court to a filed that had been bombed, and blaming the English for putting him on such a court. I don’t think anyone thinks the whole place should be blown to smithereens. What purpose would that serve? There’s a big difference between calling people names and wishing for wanton destruction.

  • Vijay · July 10, 2019 at 9:46 pm

Dan, I’m curious. What will you do if your son starts yelling at his coach or, Heavens forfend, you? Tennis may be a vicious sport but we all need to draw lines somewhere. For what it’s worth, I’ve seen a couple of top juniors yell at their parents and coaches. They went on to some excellent colleges and now lead perfectly dull lives, I assume. Save for the espisodes of yelling.

I was also a little surprised that yesterday passed without comment on this site. Wasn’t there a single word to say about any of the men’s matches ? I didn’t see very much so left it to other more expert pens and they too stayed silent.

There are a couple of women’s matches today I believe but I don’t expect much excitement there so perhaps another dull day on T-P.

  • Hartt · July 11, 2019 at 7:55 am

Catherine, I did not see much of the men’s matches yesterday, but from the scores the Big 3 all went into dominating mode after the first set. Darren Cahill was very critical of the way Goffin, and other players, tend to stop fighting when a member of the Big 3 starts to turn the match around. He said that they needed to show some fighting spirit even if the score ended up the same. He also said that you couldn’t see the match as a marathon. He thought that at each changeover the player needed to think about the next 2 games and concentrate on winning one of those.

I did watch the mixed doubles between Dabrowski/Pavic and Siegemund/Sitak. It went to a TB at 12-12 in the third, the second match at this Wimby to do so. For those who enjoy conflict, there was plenty of that in this match, largely directed to the officials. And it’s true that there were some bad line calls. Siegemund played very well in the TB and was key to her team winning the match. Gaby and Mate gave their opponents a frost handshake at the net, so there were bad feelings there as well.

Gaby and her partner Xu had won their doubles match earlier in the day, so are in the SFs. As is so often the case, she is the last Canadian player in a big tourney.

  • catherine · July 11, 2019 at 8:29 am

Hartt – thanks for that info on a match that wasn’t reported anywhere but sounds as if it was quite lively. Laura Siegemund is a good doubles player but doesn’t seem to have it for singles.

Cahill’s advice seems pretty good – I wonder if he tried to drum it into Simona during their time together. She and Svitolina have just started on CC. Elina is leading the H2H by some margin.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 8:29 am

The quote is in the article, he wanted a bomb to explode at wimbledon. Nuts

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 8:31 am

All the singles matches seemed inevitable, like we knew who was going to win and there was no resistance by the inferior players. Hopefully today’s single semis don’t follow suit.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 8:33 am

Sounds like the match of the week Hartt, Dabrowski and Xu are consistent. I need to interview this unique team someday.

  • Vijay · July 11, 2019 at 9:13 am

Scoop, lots of people wish that some others would, for instance, ‘burn in hell’. Surely you don’t take that seriously? Why are you so worked up about Fognini?

  • Vijay · July 11, 2019 at 9:16 am

I realise this isn’t an a horticultural site, but perhaps someone knows the answer.

What’s with the grass at Wimbledon? It’s clear that players don’t serve and volley much anymore, and that there’s no grass on the baseline after the first week. But look at the spots where the ballkids are standing. Why is there no grass over there? This seems very different from 20 years ago. Much more so that when Borg played 40 years ago. Why the difference? Surely the ballkids aren’t doing anything different now, are they?

  • catherine · July 11, 2019 at 9:28 am

Simona’s into the final 6-1 6-4 and that was hardly a match. I’d guess the next one will be the same and Saturday Halep/Williams will face up.

I wonder if Angie is watching this somewhere and if she is feeling sad. Her presence at Wimbledon this year was so brief it was hardly noticed – defending champion and she was gone like a puff of smoke. But she has her name on the wall and the little badge and that’s a lot more than most players can dream of.

  • catherine · July 11, 2019 at 9:31 am

Vijay – it’s possibly a different type of grass – or else the ballkids are wearing shoes with extra tough soles 🙂

  • catherine · July 11, 2019 at 9:56 am

Sorry – Simona won 6-1 6-3, even better.

I’m afraid Scoop’s hopes will be dashed.

  • Vijay · July 11, 2019 at 11:08 am

[I tried posting this before, but it didn’t seem to go through.]

What’s up with the grass at Wimbledon?

Yes, the baseline is shorn of grass, but what about where the ballkids stand? Why is that area so devoid of grass? I don’t recall it being like that 20 years ago, and much less so when Borg an co played 40 years ago.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 11:09 am

Vijay, Not worked up, Fognini is one of my favorite players to watch. But I think it was astoundingly terrible that he said this and it should not be taken lightly or swept under a rug, it’s far worse than anything Tennys Sandgren tweeted about gays and the Bible or what Margaret Court said about her religious beliefs. Plus, it’s not the first time Fognini has said something so inflammatory. I don’t understand why the tennis world came down so hard on Sandgren and Court and are turning a blind eye to Fognini.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 11:11 am

Vijay, the grass is slow, and it’s slowing more by the day according to Pella. Apparently Wimbledon wants slower tennis. Aside from the last two days, the tennis has been fantastic. Can’t answer why the ballkid spots are so bare.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 11:12 am

Serena is cruising too, easy first set. Ticketbuyers can’t be overjoyed. Hope they give them a doubles or mixed match bonus center court match.

  • catherine · July 11, 2019 at 11:23 am

Vijay – your post did go through and my answer is similar to Scoop’s – the grass is different because W’don wants ‘slower tennis’ – so maybe it wears differently.

Serena’s match 6-1 6-2. Not much value for the cost of tickets. Let’s hope the final is a better advertisement for women’s tennis. What was Stryckova doing in a semi anyway ?

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 11:48 am

Strycova was another Wimbledon comet, like Jerzy Janowicz who I forgot to mention in the Wimbledon comets article. Halep’s bad record vs Serena suggests another bad final. But for some reason I think Halep can take out Serena if she doesn’t let herself be intimidated.

  • catherine · July 11, 2019 at 11:52 am

BTW- nothing ‘slow’ about Serena’s demolition job – 61 mins of total efficiency. 89% 1st serve pts won; 100% service games won; 100% break points saved; 81% net points won etc. And 942 metres covered v 1098.

  • Michael In UK · July 11, 2019 at 12:08 pm

Yes, Scoop, a commentator on Wimbledon radio suggested that Halep might have better chance of winning this, now that she already has a grand slam win, French Open 2018.

I do hope she can make a better match of the final than the losing players in today’s semi finals, poor value for money as Catherine has said.

  • Harold · July 11, 2019 at 12:12 pm

Just listened to a podcast w/ Jimmy Arias, head of IMG tennis now..he claims its unworldly what the top 3 are doing, and claimed, they are widening the gap further between them, and the rest. Talks about kids at IMG, that will be joining the tour, doesn’t predict Future #1’s.. I think he’s afraid the top 3 will be killing these kids hopes for 3 or 4 more years.

Dont coaches, and Academies have to be taken to task for not building a new World # 1, over the past 10 years. The top 3, aren’t the same player, each has multiple excellent talents, from a little mechanical Djoko, to free lowing Fed, to Nadal bludgeoning opponents.
Why cant the so called Great Coaches bring along that next guy?

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 12:42 pm

Maybe the mixed doubles gave Serena the extra confidence and spark to do so well in singles? Will other top players follow this lead?

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 12:44 pm

The last thing the WTA needs is a bad final. We are due for a dramatic battle, both players desperate, though Serena of course will probably want it more and that will be the difference. How much does Halep want this? She may be content with another final.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 12:48 pm

Harold, it’s a unique situation, Fed Rafa and Djokovic are desperately desirous of being the GOAT with the most majors. They each inspire and motivate each other to outlast the other two. It’s a phenomenon that will never happen again. It’s ruthless fierce obsessed greed for major titles like we have never seen before. Eventually the successor will emerge. I think it’s Felix. Or Martin Damm Jr 🙂 The big lefty is into the semis of junior Wimby. He beat that Spanish teen phenom Garfia.

  • catherine · July 11, 2019 at 12:55 pm

I don’t think Simona will win this year, maybe another year – do a Kerber/Muguruza pattern, runner-up and then winner. Serena just looks too strong. And no Scoop, I don’t expect other players to follow her example in mixed. They just aren’t interested in the extra matches.

What’s the shortest women’s sf ever ? Probably BJK bt Rosie Casals 6-0 6-1 in around 30 mins in 1969. There’ve been some pretty short finals as well. More back in the days of s/v.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 11, 2019 at 12:58 pm

I don’t think Simona has the heart, the fearlessness or the mental toughness to bother Serena. Serena would DO ANYTHING to get 24. She would sell her soul. Simona will get steamrolled.

  • Hartt · July 12, 2019 at 11:13 am

Dabrowski/Xu won their SF match against the defending champs, Krejckova and Siniakova, so they will play in their first Slam final. They likely will face Strycova/Hsieh who are up a set and a break in the other SF.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 12, 2019 at 1:42 pm

They are great team, continuing the big results over and over and they stay loyal to each other.

  • Hartt · July 12, 2019 at 3:39 pm

It would be great if Dabrowski/Xu won their first doubles title. They seem to enjoy playing with one another, although occasionally Xu has to fulfil obligations in China, and Gaby has to find another partner for a tourney or two.

  • Hartt · July 12, 2019 at 3:43 pm

As a Fed fan, I was thrilled with his SF win over Rafa today. Roger had a second set walkabout, which he does on occasion, but he came back to win the next two sets. And he’d won the first handily. Rafa seemed a bit off through much of the match.

Now if Roger could just win the title it would be a perfect result for Fed fans. 🙂

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 12, 2019 at 3:56 pm

Federer may be at his all time best right now. No signs of any decline whatsoever.

  • Hartt · July 12, 2019 at 4:44 pm

Catherine, there has been some news on Bianca Andreescu. The good news is the experts think her shoulder injury is not a recurring one, and after it heals she should be fine. She is back doing some light training. Apparently there is a chance she could play Washington, but they aren’t even certain if she will play the Rogers Cup. But it looks promising that she will be able to play at least one tuneup event before the USO. Her coach, Sylvain Bruneau, warned that expectations should be kept low for her return.

So it looks like her team wisely is being cautious. But it will be great when she is finally back.

  • catherine · July 12, 2019 at 8:18 pm

Hartt – thanks for this info. We’ll just keep our fingers crossed. From this it seems she won’t be playing Rogers Cup.

  • Hartt · July 12, 2019 at 9:58 pm

It’s hard to know about Rogers Cup, but I probably won’t get a ticket. It is hard for the tourney because she is the “face” of the WTA part of the tournament.
