Korda Kicks Off Roland Garros With Win

Sebi Korda continues to impress the tennis world with his total all court game, today he won the first morning match at Roland Garros by besting 36 year old Andres Seppi in four sets.

The 20 year old lost first round at US Open as a wildcard where he was defeated in four sets by finalist Alexander Zverev. This was Korda’s first ATP match win. Korda sealed the milestone triumph with a smooth two hander up the line winner and a loud roar.

Korda will likely face John Isner in the second round in Paris, as Isner is cruising to a victory over French wildcard Eliot Benchetrit.

Jannik Sinner demolished David Goffin 75 60 63 in the debut match in the new Court Philippe-Chatrier stadium roof arena. Sinner is now 2-0 head to head vs. the 11 seed from Belgium. Sinner will play Benjamin Bonzi next. The French wildcard beat Finn Emil Ruusuvuori.

Birthday girl Simona Halep posted another strong performance by beating Sara Sorribes Tormo 64 60. Halep turned 29 today.

Vika Azarenka continued her fine play with an easy 61 62 win vs. Danka Kovinic.

American Shelby Rogers was upset though, falling to the unknown 19 year old Russian qualifier Kamilla Rahhimova 62 63.

Elise Mertens and Maria Sakkari also both won in straight sets.

Taylor Fritz won in five sets vs. an unknown 19 year old Czech named Machac.

Venus Williams lost in straight sets to Anna Schmeidlova.

I’ve seen Machac in some Challengers, I think he’s a future top 50-75 mainstay… he had a brilliant turnaround against Fritz after being down 2-0 in sets.

The big question is what is going on with Goffin? He’s been bad for a year now, looks dull and uninspired. And some of his losses have ugly scorelines like yesterday. We know Sinner probably has a top 20 future in him, so good for him, but man Goffin has to clean up or he’ll ranking will continue to dip.

Cory, what an incredible ATP grand slam debut my Machac. Very impressed how well he played vs a tough cookie like Fritz. If that was a fluke performance I would be shocked not to see Machac become a top 20 player soon. Super win for Fritz to survive that storm. Also very impressed by Cocomania’s quality win vs Konta, she played so smart using slices. Konta was the one who looked shaky and unconfident in the longer rallies. Well done.
