Kei Pulls Off AO Miracle Win

Kei Nishikori was getting battered by Thiago Monteiro for two sets, enduring a 46 67 pummeling from the Brazilian lefty, who seemed to have too much firepower, blasting winners all over the court.

But the 35 year old didn’t give up. Instead he engineered one of the best over 35 Grand Slam wins you’ll ever see.

I don’t have any idea how he did it because it was bedtime after the second set. The morning score showed Kei prevailed 75 62 63 which is hard to believe considering the evidence of the first two sets.

Kei just be in iron man shape right now to still have the belief he could overcome those first two sets against a starving Grand Slam player – Monteiro was 7-23 in Grand Slam matches going into the duel.

The AO site shows Kei saying the crowd helped him get through and “I almost gave up. He almost deserved to win today but somehow I fought through.”

Monteiro earned to match points at 45 in the third but big serving saved Kei, who now has produced five wins from two sets down.

This was Nishikori’s first match at AO since 2021 because he was hampered by hip, knee and ankle problems.

It wasn’t quite agony for Monteiro at the end though, as he was all smiles and respect at the net handshake for his conqueror. It was a stinging defeat but the 30 year old surely learned some valuable lessons from the old master.
