Keenan Mayo’s Secret Tips

Last year I found Keenan Mayo’s old Head Tour racquet bag at a Goodwill store in Bradenton, a mile from IMG. I bought it for $9.99 as it looks nice and it goes with my two Head Speed Pros which I just started using last year.

The bag was fairly new and even had Mayo’s name embroidered on it. I had heard of the name of Keenan Mayo but didn’t know offhand that he was ranked 55 in ITF juniors and played at University of Illinois before transferring last year to Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount men’s tennis team adds transfer Keenan Mayo to the roster, as Mayo has signed to play with the Lions starting with the 2019-20 season, announced by head coach Tom Lloyd Friday.

“I am extremely pumped to have Keenan join our program,” said Lloyd. “He will bring immediate experience and impact to our growing program.”

Mayo comes as a transfer from the University of Illinois, where he was nominated for freshman of the year after putting together an impressive spring campaign, beating several ranked opponents in singles and doubles play. Mayo was ranked as high as No. 71 while at Illinois.

The Long Beach Calif. native was ranked as high as No. 55 in the Junior World Ranking and has a current ATP ranking of 603. Mayo represented the United States in the Junior Davis World Cup and is a two-time Gold Ball Singles winner.

“I believe LMU offers the perfect balance of academic help and stability needed to perform as a high-level student athlete,” said Mayo. “I couldn’t be happier to start a new beginning at LMU”

Inside Mayo’s discarded Head bag was a note presumably to himself to read before matches…

I will share the self-coaching tips with readers because they are valuable and instrumental for all players…

  • Finish on both serves
  • Approach line or inside
  • Aggressive second serve
  • Serve creates opportunities it doesn’t just start the point
  • Stay aware and don’t get distracted
  • Act respectfully
  • If you aren’t getting better you’re losing anyway

All players should follow these valuable tips I found in a discarded used tennis bag. Wisdom can be found in the strangest places.
