Is this the year for American Tennis at US Open?

Four Americans are in position to become the first US player to win the New York City Grand Slam since Andy Roddick in 2003.

Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Brandon Nakashima have all reached the fourth round of the 2024 US Open and with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic already eliminated, each has to be savoring their chances to capture their first Grand Slam.

26 year old Tiafoe will face Djokovic slayer Alexei Popyrin today. Fritz will duel 8 seed Casper Ruud today. Nakashima takes on Alexander Zverev today and then Tommy Paul meets top seed Jannik Sinner tomorrow.

With a dwindling tennis market, the emergence of Pickleball and Padel, and mainstay tournaments falling off the schedule, American tennis can surely use the surge of adrenaline right now.

The men have also been joined into the second week by three women players – Jess Pegula, Coco Gauff and Emma Navarro. 30 year old Pegula will face Russian Diana Shnaider on Monday while Coco and Emma will face off today, a rematch of their Wimbledon showdown earlier this summer.

Coco played a terrible match. DFs and UEs galore. I remember her as as a 12/13 year old shouting about being the GOAT. Seems nobody told her to get some in. The hype started there and hasn’t stopped.

She looks far from happy out on the court.

I read Harold Solomon’s piece and I while I aknowlege his status as an analyst (rather superieror to mine) I’m not changing my mind on Coc’s standing at the moment. I didn’t honestly think it was a good match for level at a GS.

I’d like to see Coco improve but there are a lot of players out there who won’t want to give her elbow room.

Catherine, has Coco really improved in years? Her results supposedly got better, more wins but if you look at the actual work, she’s the same player as four years ago. Some people suspect she got a gift last year from the field and Sabalenka in the final and frankly, it’s hard to argue that. She’s basically the same level as Collins, Kenin, Navarro, Keys, Pegula, without the the excessive media hype. Navarro looks like the best of the American lot right now.
