Is this the end for Victor Estrella Burgos?

estrellaVictor Estrella is 36 years old and ranked 156 in the world. In the recent months the Dominican hero’s ranking has dropped and now he has to protect his biggest batch of points collected last year when he won the ATP Quito Ecuador event (for the second year in a row). And guess what? Estrella has a winnable first rounder against a Czech player he beat last year in the draw but looming in round two is top seed Ivo Karlovic. Could this be the inevitable end of the incredible journey of one of the ATP’s most unlikely success stories? Or does this mighty gladiator (who was omitted from the ATP World Tour media guide this year along with other veteran players Benjamin Becker – Denis Istomin – Sergey Stakhovsky – Lukas Rosol – Ernests Gulbis – Radek Stepanek) have one last surges of greatness left in his body and spirit?

INcredible win last night by Estrella Burgos as he won 67 76 76 vs top seed Ivo Karlovic saving three match points to boot – Victor is now 12-0 in Quito where he has won the title the last two years – Absolutely incredible display by Victor Estrella once again with his career and ranking on the line – will face wildcard Gaio in the next round –

This is becoming a great story. I call Montpellier the “Richard Gasquet Invitational” because Richard has won it 3 times in the last 4 years. If Estrella Burgos wins Quito a third time think he deserves to have the “Victor Estrella Burgos Invitational.”

And how impressive is Karlovic? The guy is nearly 38 and is ranked No. 18.
