Iga Swiatek Will Win Roland Garros

Iga Swiatek is ready to become a major champion. Today she decimated Simona Halep 61 62, making the Romanian two-time major queen look like an ordinary NCAA player.

Swiatek is 19 now and ranked 48 in the WTA, and she has never looked better on a tennis court. Firepower off both wings and in all directions, fine volleys, smooth movement, and emotional arenaline, expressed by several CMONS. But it was the tones of the CMONS, that struck your ear. They were CMONS that expressed, “This is mine. I know it, you know it, give it to me!”

Swiatek’s emergence in the WTA came two years ago in 2018, when she 17 and still a junior, she skipped junior slams to play pro ITFs and her results were strong enough for her WTA ranking to rise from 727 to 174. Swiatek had already won Wimbledon juniors and Roland Garros doubles.

In 2019 Swiatek made final in Auckland but then she slowed down. Defending champ Halep beat her at Roland Garros in the fourth round 60 61 in 45 minutes, so avenging Halep today proves Swiatek has improved considerably in the last year.

The manner in which she pulverized poor Halep today was as impressive as any Grand Slam performance you will see. And it’s the big step a young player needs to take to prove in their own minds they are ready.

Swiatek is ready now and she will raise the trophy next week.

Post match quotes:

Halep: “All the credit to her, she played unbelievable today and she was everywhere and she hit all the balls very strong, very powerful.”

Swiatek: “I just felt that it’s possible and I could do it.”

“I think it’s really nice that we have many younger players coming up and that aren’t scared. And I’m happy that I am one of them, and I am going to continue in that way.”

“I always liked to make progress one step after another, because I feel like I can be more consistent in the future, and pressure is a little bit lower. I made it two times already to the fourth round and I feel like that was the perfect opportunity for me to be in a quarterfinal.”

“I’m really glad I wasn’t in the final of [Roland Garros] last year because I feel the pressure would be too big. And I like that I have time to grow up and I think it’s perfect for me doing it one step after another.”

Based on the quote above, it sounds like Halep was gracious in defeat. Good for her.

In my opinion, the two most important things for an athlete are: 1) to have a good work ethic (regardless of your actual results) and 2) to show good sportsmanship and treat others (including fans) with respect.

Not everybody can become a champion in sports, but any athlete can strive for those two goals.

Swiatek and Kenin have not played on the professional tour, but they have faced each other on the red clay in Paris. Swiatek beat Kenin 6-4, 7-5 in the French Open junior event in 2016 in the third round.

I guess I’m the only one to predict the Swiatek Roland Garros win six days ago.
