Idea: The Anti Laver Cup… The Michael Russell Journeyman Cup

By Scoop Malinowski
The Laver Cup is a fading, declining idea which probably will not survive much longer without the star power of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic to build it’s production around. Fritz vs Ruud and Cerundolo vs Zverev exhibition matchups have very limited appeal.
I wonder how an anti Laver Cup would do, a team tournament with non stars ranked outside 100-500. I’d be more interested in that than another Laver Cup.
It could be a team competition – North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa.
Guys like Ruud and Fritz are very good players but they are on the brink of being overexposed. I think tennis fans would rather see up & coming players or low ranked outsiders determined to crash the big show.
The success of certain ATP Challengers like Newport, Sarasota, Tallahassee, Savannah, Quimper, Mexico, etc proves there is a market and demand by tennis fans to see players ranked outside the top 100. US Open qualies starring players ranked outside 100 is always a sensational event to experience. The tennis sells itself, whether the player is ranked 50 or 250, they all can play high level. These lower players just need a platform to compete on. If the ATP can’t be bothered maybe PTPA can get involved and do it, even as an off schedule event.
The Laver Cup was a good idea for a while but it’s stale now. New ideas and concepts need to be innovated to keep the sport evolving and ahead of the competition.
Call it “The Michael Russell Journeyman Cup” to honor the term Andre Agassi infamously insultingly called Vince Spadea before their Grand Slam showdown which was actually won by Spadea in Melbourne. Michael Russell never won an ATP title and spent the majority of his career (1998-2015) ranked outside the top 100. Iron Mike’s best ranking was 60 in the world and he famously held match point on eventual Roland Garros champion Gustavo Kuerten.

That’s a super cool idea Scoop Malinowski— hopefully the PTPA can step in and arrange tournaments that are advantageous to the lower ranked players and that tennis can be a much more wholesome, fun experience too.
