Hsieh Returns With Win In Madrid

Su-Wei Hsieh hadn’t played a pro match since the WTA Finals in doubles in Guadalajara in November 2021 but the long hiatus had little effect as she and partner Barbora Strycova beat the Chan sisters Laticia and Angel, 16 62 10-3 in their first match encounter at Mutua Madrid Open.

Match point was Strycova serving in the deuce court to Laticia Chan who missed the return wide. The winners screamed in joy – it was their first win together in over two years. Strycova has been inactive for over two years due to giving birth to a son and Hsieh played with Elise Mertens in her final tournaments before taking hiatus for presumably an injury but she’s never exactly specified why.

Hsieh is 37 now but still a winning force in doubles. She will also try singles later this spring.

Hsieh and Strycova will play Kato and Sutjiadi in the round of 16.

Scoop – you got here before me with that link. A good read – Hsieh’s take on the world should be preserved, bottled and marketed to anyone who wants to get the best out of sport and life 🙂

A frank but overall generous piece on Emma and outlines well the physical struggles that may shorten or even terminate her career. There’s also an underlying but well- supported suggestion that some of these struggles are psychological in origin.

What are we to make of her ‘press-conference’ ? I’ve never seen/heard a player (apart from John McEnroe) show their contempt for the whole circus so clearly. I laughed when I read the transcription but I wondered how much trouble she’s going to pull down on her head. She’s not at school anymore. Some of her sponsors were probably less than thrilled.

I really hope things can straighten out as Emma grows older because at her best she’s a lovely player with a quality which sets her apart from her peers. Not sure what that is but it’s there.

Catherine, Marcelo Rios did one worse at the US Open in 97 or 96, which I was a part of, trying to do a Biofile in the press conf because like one other reporter showed up, he gave answers, like, I don’t know, I don’t remember, dont’ ask questions like this. It was a famous press conference in the press room that fortnight. Tennis Magazine even ran my feature about it comparing the Rios biofile to Lapenttis. I could see Emma blaming injuries for her losses and failures, better to blame that than choking or just losing to better players. She can also play the pregnancy card, or fake pregnancy card, still not fully believing Osaka, her pictures looks suspect.

Catherine, Hsieh is a wonder of the tennis world, and the show isn’t over yet. She may have more miracles left in her magic wand.
