Hitting Next To An ATP Champion in Bradenton

Our “ghetto courts” are still open in Bradenton and each day I’m there an array of quality players of all ages come to these courts which are the only unlocked public courts in Bradenton.

Today I saw a former ATP Champion who won two singles titles, both in Moscow at the Kremlin Cup. You may remember Andrei Cherkasov, who achieved a career high ranking of 13 in singles and made the quarterfinals at the Australian Open (1990), US Open (1990) and French Open (1992).

The 49 year old Russian, who coaches at IMG, won a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, notably beating Pete Sampras from two sets down in the third round.

Cherkasov won the inaugural Kremlin Cup in Moscow, beating Tim Mayotte 61 62. He defended the title in 1991, overcoming Jacob Hlasek and two championship points in an epic 76 36 76 win.

His most epic of all wins though came in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1993. In the third round, Cherkasov survived a three hour and 54 minute war with Andrea Gaudenzi, saving three match points in the 67 76 75 conquest.

Today, Cherkasov was hitting with his daughter Anastasia. Wearing an orange Mizuno shirt, white Asics shoes and wielding a Dunlop racquet, the five foot, eleven inch Cherkasov is still super fit, agile and strikes an impressive ball, especially on the backhand wing.

He was doing all kinds of special drills with his daughter. First I noticed playing baseline points and then he would loft up a slow, high semi moonball. The daughter would attack it with an offensive shot and then attack the net. Cherkasov would rip a clean desperate backhand laser beam but she was at the net every time and converted every volley. Many of them impressive because her father’s shots were ATP caliber.

Then they played points where she served and they completed the point. Cherkasov said they were working on special points but I didn’t notice exactly what.

I challenged the girl, age about 16 or so, but she tweaked her back of the left knee and couldn’t play a tiebreaker with me at the end. Cherkasov said it was her second session of the day. But they will be at the courts again tomorrow. I will try to do a Biofile with him tomorrow.

Cherkasov told me Mikhail Youzhny is in Bradenton now working daily with Denis Shapovalov at a nearby academy which is still open for members.

A number three ranked ITF junior, Cherkasov achieved a very good pro career, winning the two Kremlin Cups, three major quarters, a 13 singles ranking and over $2 million in prize money, including an overall win loss record of 193-214. He lost in four other singles finals in Bucharest, Brussels, Bologna and Sydney.

Cherkasov retired in 2000 at age 30 without ever having won a match at Wimbledon.

He did play Futures matches in 2013 and 2007 in Russia, losing both to Russians ranked 401 and 1068.

Should I take a lesson from the former ATP Champion?

“Should I take a lesson from the former ATP Champion?”

Hell yes. What a great experience that would be. Ask him to play you in a set without holding back. See if you can win one game.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 14, 2020 at 9:51 am

Good idea. I haven’t had a bagel in six months )

  • George · April 14, 2020 at 11:31 am

You will be lucky to win even a single point.

I get lessons with Jack Brasington and Michael Russell. When they play at ATP level, I can barely get my racquet back in time for the ball. Everything is moving so fast.

The difference between pros and recreational players is mind boggling. They are really playing a different sport. It really becomes about holding serve, and that is impossible to do against a pro or former pro for that matter.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 14, 2020 at 11:50 am

George you are possibly right. Cherkasov is super fit and agile, saw him doing stretches after playing. He’s still a tennis machine. He beat Pete Sampras from two sets down in the Olympics. That says a LOT. But I did see his daughter have some success against him, maybe he let her, so I will take that as inspiration to cause the big upset πŸ™‚ I was hitting with some good players and coming out on top. I noticed he was watching some of it. Petr Korda watched me playing a match next to him and his son Sebi practicing at Sarasota Open two years ago. I have some weapons, can move. Not sure if it can hold up against pro world class level. Only one way to find out.

  • jg · April 14, 2020 at 12:02 pm

you should do it Scoop–I think you can probably hold your own (no saying win by any means) in a baseline game and on your serve–the big difference is his serve, you probably won’t get a point, unless he doubles.

  • Sam · April 15, 2020 at 2:22 pm

Just curious–is his daughter ranked as a junior or anything?

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 15, 2020 at 7:31 pm

Sam, Yes Anastasia is more than ranked, she has WTA points already at 16. Earned in Cancun. She was up a set and a break on Coco Gauff a week and a half after Coco won French Open juniors two years ago but couldn’t finish her off. I played Anastasia today ) I had the court hitting with the Dominican coach Jose who was waiting for his lesson. I told her and her brother, they could have the court but one had to play me in a ten point tiebreaker. She stepped up and beat me 10-4. But I have excuse. I brought by Yonex racquets not my favorite Head Speed Pro which has a worn out grip and I haven’t been able to get a new overgrip. And in the last minute of hitting with Jose I popped a string on my Nalbandian Yonex and had to use the E zone which I don’t like as much, less control, less feel. She whooped me. Great backhand and volleys, very good forehand, pretty good serve. I want rematch! After tiebreaker I gave copy of Facing Marat Safin to Andrei Cherkasov and we did a Biofile interview. Superb Biofile too. He beat Sampras three times.

  • George · April 15, 2020 at 9:31 pm

Imagine if you played the father.

The chasm between recreational player and ATP level is wider than the Grand Canyon.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 15, 2020 at 9:56 pm

George, Andrei said he can beat Anastasia pretty easily, even if he plays the style that suits her game and how the other girls play, which he does, intead of playing to make her uncomfortable with different spins and speeds and heights. This is a player who beat Pete Sampras in the Olympics and another time. Amazing player. But I also saw in his results he beat a Polish guy I played once like 62 63 and I played this Polish guy and lost 75 75 five years ago, I had no idea this Polish guy Piotr Szczepanik was once ranked 501 in the world and even beat Youzhny. Cherkasov played the best in the world and held his own and beat some. He would crush me easily if he really tried. I might win a few points. The daughter is very good too. So many talented players out there.

  • Jon King · April 16, 2020 at 12:12 am

Scoop, you must be talking about Anastasia Sysoeva. She is actually 17 years old. Okay player, saw her play our friends daughter who we train with occasionally when they are in FL., Charlotte Chavatipon, about a year ago and she got crushed 6-0, 6-0. In competition she was very defensive, way behind the baseline. But she should be a solid college player.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 16, 2020 at 1:06 am

Jon, is Charlotte Chavatipon from California, and tall and skinny with long hair and a baseball cap? I met her and her father at Eddie Herr a few years ago, she beat Owensby or some name blonde American girl I believe. She really impressed me.

  • Matty · April 16, 2020 at 5:47 am

George I occasionally hit on the courts next to the 51st and 82nd ranked ATP tour players at my club. I’m a solid 4.0 – no way I’d get a game off either. Pace, depth, spin rate, ball striking, recovery. These guys hardly miss and never take a point off!!

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 16, 2020 at 7:53 am

No 4.0 could get a point from anyone with ATP points. It’s just another galaxy.

  • Jon King · April 16, 2020 at 9:43 am

Thats her Scoop, very tall, the family lives in Cali, mom is originally from Guam. Her dad had her training 6 hours a day from a very young age. She signed a letter of intent with U of Texas.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 16, 2020 at 10:04 am

She stood out to me, good fighter, tough competitor, fine strokes. Nice people. She beat Sysoeva 61 62 not 6060 according to ITF )

  • Jon King · April 16, 2020 at 10:10 am

They have played twice. She beat Sysoeva 1 and 2 in Texas last October. The match we went to was in Carson last April. She beat her 0-0 in that match.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 16, 2020 at 10:38 am

    Gettin closer!!

  • Jon King · April 16, 2020 at 10:46 am

Ha, true. Charlotte is almost exactly a year older so making progress against an older girl is all good.

  • George · April 16, 2020 at 11:52 am

“No 4.0 could get a point from anyone with ATP points.”

I’m an upper level 4.0. Won several tournaments last year. Probably should move up, but discovered by playing some 4.5 guys that there is a big jump to 4.5.

I cannot win a point against former pros Michael Russell or Jack Brasington, and they are in their forties.

I hit one of best forehands in the corner against Michael Russell. He just casually flicked a short crosscourt winner to the opposite side. He then said that is what Federer does to him!

The levels in tennis are just not comprehensible unless you play with these guys. It looks so easy on TV.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 16, 2020 at 12:07 pm

Jon, yes she really impressed me, she could hit a hundred ball rallies no problem and a good mover. Tough opponent. Good athlete. Wonder who her coach is?

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 16, 2020 at 12:10 pm

George, good job, 4.0 is a battlefield, so may players condensed at that level. 4.5 and 5 are attainable, i know guys in their 60s and late 60s who are 5.0s. I play 5.0 tennis at times, I can win games off guys who had atp points and rankings. Takes speed and to hit 3 winners in one point! Sometimes 5 winners in one point!

  • Jon King · April 16, 2020 at 6:18 pm

Jimmy Johnson and Vasileios Psyrras have worked with Charlotte. Johnson runs a tennis academy in Cali.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 16, 2020 at 6:25 pm

Thanks I have not heard of either of them. So many quality coaches out there.

  • jg · April 17, 2020 at 10:58 am

Laver Cup put off a year (2021 in Boston)–so the US Open will most likely be canceled (they are deciding shortly, including whether to hold it without fans) and the French may very will happen in September–I cannot see it happening without some limitation on the number of spectators or no spectators.

  • Jon King · April 17, 2020 at 2:58 pm

I am surprised tennis has not put together interesting player matches without fans. Opportunity to give ESPN live sports. Tennis is missing a chance to fill a sports void. Gauff vs Serena. Rafa vs Djoker, etc.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 17, 2020 at 3:41 pm

Did you know Shanghai and Beijing never shut down? Quite telling eh?

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 17, 2020 at 3:42 pm

Jon. I agree. And Catherine’s favorite matchup…serena vs McEnroe. How about it for corona charity.

  • Anonymous · April 18, 2020 at 12:39 am

Many of you may have seen the Djokovic proposal on the player relief fund. Keep in mind this is just a proposal and not anything anyone has agreed to. I am hearing there is much work to do on this and it’s pretty clear that the aim in the players putting this out is to publicize this issue and see how much the tour is willing to contribute.

One interesting aspect of the Coronavirus fallout for the tennis world has been that this has cooled off chances of Gimelstob coming back this year as was anticipated. His PR tea is still hard at work with a scholarship donation and a fluff piece by a pseudo-journalist in recent days but I am told that there ar many other considerations now in tennis than for his eventual return to be a priority. I would assume he and Djokovic have spoken over the last month or so but I doubt it was over anything concrete on how to proceed.

  • George · April 18, 2020 at 8:50 am

“I play 5.0 tennis at times, I can win games off guys who had atp points and rankings.”

    Scoop,

Have you tried playing in an USTA open tournament? In Texas, the players are usually about to be college or college level. Points consist of huge serve followed by huge forehand.

    Curious about your experience.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 18, 2020 at 9:12 am

George Yes I have played and won open tournaments, have beaten and played tough vs D1 and D3 players. And some very good juniors. I played Ben Zink last year in an open in Lakewood ranch, he was no. 1 NC State ten years ago and was 700 in the world in doubles and I was up 2-0 in the second set and lost a deciding point for 3-0 because I strained my calf on the previous point and could not run anymore. I tried to win point for 3-0 and retire. But I retired at 2-1. I am capable of reaching the level to compete with strong players like this. But also can be blown off the court by this level. Feels great to play high level tennis though. Last one was vs Tomasz Borucki who was 1300 in the world in doubles ATP in 2003. He beat me 6-1, his serve was pro level. SOme of his shots sounded like MLB batting practice. But I did beat him in baseline game without serves 12-10!

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 18, 2020 at 9:26 am

Anonymous, you should come around here more often, your intel posts are fascinating. Makes sense the players are putting a sort of squeeze play on the ATP and majors. I noticed Tennis Channel showed an old RG match last week with Gimelstob calling the action and he was good, and it seemed like a subliminal way of gently bringing his presence and energy back. Time heals all wounds. I missed the fluff piece, presume it was by Clarey. Who sat next to me one year ago in Miami Open press box while he was doing a phone interview with Gimelstob. I overheard the whole thing.

  • Jon King · April 18, 2020 at 11:42 am

Gimelstob was a great chess player when the players had some cards to play. The virus and the aging of the big 3 have put that in the past. ATP will find sponsor money harder to come by post virus. In addition, once Fed, Djoker, Rafa are done, which will be soon in relative terms, players have zero power at the top.

After the big 3, fans do not and will not care as much. No all time greats, no all time rivalries. Players will be interchangeable, a meteoric rise here and there, then back to the pack. The odds of having the dapper Fed, the suave young Rafa, and the uber talented yet somewhat villain in Djoker at the same time was one in a trillion. Murray tossed in for a while added to the greatness of that era.

Just like we look back at the glory days of the 1970s-1980s where a tennis marriage was the biggest story in the world, we will look back at the big 3 days as the glory days. Once its done, tennis will fade even more into the background. Too much competition for interest, and that will get more intense going forward.

The ATP will have less power in the grand scheme, but the players will have almost zero power. Same with WTA, players are going to learn that instead if 100-120 making a good living from tennis like now, maybe a third of that will make a living from tennis in 5-10 years.

It cracked me up to see Alison Riske calling for lower ranked players to use the lay off to organize. Seriously? The money pot will shrink fast and all but the top 15-20 players will be glad to pay their bills with tennis.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 18, 2020 at 1:12 pm

Jon, I disagree. People thought the end of Pete and Andre would be a down period too but look what happened. New super stars and super champions will arise from the ashes when Fed Rafa Djokovid depart. No doubt. The wta will continue to ride shotgun )

  • Jon King · April 18, 2020 at 1:37 pm

Scoop, its never just one thing that leads to downfall. I built up and sold 2 businesses over the years, its always dominoes that lead to success and failure.

Tennis has multiple issues going forward. The loss of the big 3 is one of them. The odds of multiple other players coming along, in their prime, with great stories, staying healthy and on top for a decade is slim.

But even if another big 3 would emerge, sports has changed. Young folks are into esports, wrestling, etc. 1000 channels, streaming services. Tennis fans are older and dying off.

The third domino is the current economic situation. Less money in fans pockets, less money in sponsors pockets. So you have a one, two, three strikes all coming for tennis at the same time.

The USTA announced $20 million in pay cuts and marketing cutbacks. Just a tip of the iceberg for tennis federations around the world.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 18, 2020 at 2:09 pm

Jon, you didn’t even mention Pickleball. Yes this govt shutdown has been devastating (by design?) to Americans and how the people respond after this mess ends is unknown. The future of many tennis clubs is also a ? The future of smaller tournaments is a ? Just wish these dirty democrats would work to end this thing instead of extending it and endlessly attacking Trump. Beijing and Shanghai never even shutdown, would you believe that? Shanghai is 500 miles from Wuhan. Now the latest is Obama donated $3.7 million to the Wuhan lab. Further leading to the possibility the democrats rigged this virus entirely to destroy America so they can blame Trump and win the next election with their zombie Biden. If true, these treasonous traitors need to all be HUNG.

  • Sam · April 18, 2020 at 3:15 pm

“Sam, Yes Anastasia is more than ranked, she has WTA points already at 16. Earned in Cancun.”

So she’s probably not going to become a college player?

“I told her and her brother”

    How old is her brother?

“they could have the court but one had to play me in a ten point tiebreaker.”

    A stern ultimatum, huh? πŸ˜‰

    “She whooped me.”

Scoop, have you ever gotten beaten by a girl before? πŸ™‚

    “I want rematch!”

Maybe you’ll get one if you stick around long enough.

“After tiebreaker I gave copy of Facing Marat Safin to Andrei Cherkasov”

    Autographed?

  • Sam · April 18, 2020 at 3:19 pm

“Now the latest is Obama donated $3.7 million to the Wuhan lab.”

Are you serious??? Where did you hear this?

Just like almost everything else, this virus is apparently “made in China.” πŸ˜›

“can blame Trump and win the next election with their zombie Biden. If true, these treasonous traitors need to all be HUNG.”

I’d be surprised if Biden were to win. I just don’t see it happening.

  • Sam · April 18, 2020 at 3:22 pm

Did you hear about this? Germany is acting like it’s going back to its Nazi past:

    https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/04/a_german_crackdown_on_shutdown_dissenter_has_a_distinctly_fascist_feel.html

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 18, 2020 at 7:51 pm

Yes I play a lot of junior girls and high school and college girls, I lose quite often. Good workouts. No I didn’t sign it to Andrei, he didn’t ask for that. I tried to get rematch today but she’s in Naples for the weekend. Brother Nikolay is 15.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 18, 2020 at 7:55 pm

Sam, a fair reporter asked about it in the Trump press briefing yesterday. Obama gave the money in 2015. Trump replied by asking the reporter who was president in 2015? Trump is in control. Obama is going down, he’s in deep shi7. He may be the first high profile indictment Q alluded to, which will shock the world and be the first domino. Demonrats are trying to rig the election with mail voting. They are all conspiring to demand mail votes for next election. Biden is senile and can’t even handle press questions.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 18, 2020 at 11:15 pm

Check out ESPN 3 tomorrow at 10 am for live pro tennis from Bradenton Florida. The international tennis series. Week 1 of mini tour. Lorenzi. Evan King. Adrian andreev. More…

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 19, 2020 at 10:11 am

California is now bulldozing sand to ruin skateboard parks. This is about using evil power to ruin our country. They hate people. They will do anything to ruin Trump and take power back. They will try to ruin tennis courts next? I’m not being quiet anymore. At some point the poeople hav to rise up and fight. We are at war.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 19, 2020 at 10:24 am

Bradenton FL International Tennis Series live stream now Lorenzi vs Preston Brown https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/4e2a9f9d-5c37-4686-bc78-b8cf48e29cd3/bucketId/8894

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 19, 2020 at 11:31 am

Lorenzi beats P Brown 43 40. Now Brown is playing Cerretani.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 19, 2020 at 11:38 am

Preston Brown, who is said to beat Raonic in practice sometimes, and is 18, wins the first set vs Cerretani, the doubles journeyman and friend of tournament founder, 4-1. Brown was down 15-40 in the last game but managed the hold. Cerretani is at a disadvantage as Brown just played two sets and Cerretani came in cold. This is really good tennis to watch, as good as any pro event. But in a way it’s more special as it’s tennis rising from the ashes. The vision of one man Harry Cicma who made the vision a reality.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 19, 2020 at 12:18 pm

Brown beats Cerretani 41 42. Good match. Now Lorenzi plays Evan King. This is amazing to watch. Pro level tennis on a random private court. Dunlop and Sported.tv two main sponsors so far.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 19, 2020 at 12:29 pm

Evan King leads 3-2 on Lorenzi. Gambling sites have made wagering on these matches possible.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 19, 2020 at 12:53 pm

Players calling their own lines. IN three matches not one controversy. King up on Lorenzi 42 13. Good battle.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 19, 2020 at 1:19 pm

Lorenzi up 24 41 32 30 love. This is pure tennis. No long lines, no waiting, no ballboys no linespeople. just pure tennis.

  • Sam · April 19, 2020 at 4:06 pm

“Yes I play a lot of junior girls and high school and college girls, I lose quite often.”

Nice of you to let them win–very gallant. πŸ™‚

“I tried to get rematch today but she’s in Naples for the weekend. Brother Nikolay is 15.”

At what age do you think she and her brother started playing? About age 3?

Also, do you think kids like these are just “genetically” gifted? Or do you think lots of folks, given the same training and coaching at such an early age, could produce similar results?

“Sam, a fair reporter asked about it in the Trump press briefing yesterday.”

Thanks, Scoop–I did some Web searches and found a bunch of articles too.

“He may be the first high profile indictment Q alluded to”

    What is Q?

“Demonrats are trying to rig the election with mail voting. They are all conspiring to demand mail votes for next election.”

Let them try every trick in the book–ain’t gonna happen.

“Biden is senile and can’t even handle press questions.”

Well, recently he said that he’s the only candidate still left who can beat Ronald Reagan, and I agree!!! πŸ˜‰

You know, he’s starting to make Jessica Simpson look really intelligent! LOL. πŸ™‚

“I’m not being quiet anymore. At some point the poeople hav to rise up and fight. We are at war.”

Yes, we should not be quiet. Freedom of speech is a precious thing. Use it or lose it.

Glad that the Bradenton event went forward today. Hopefully things are gradually starting to get back to normal.

Hope you get your rematch with Anastasia soon. πŸ™‚
