Former NHL player analyzes Serena vs Wang

Kent Carlson was a physical defenseman for the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals back in the 1980s. He also watched last night’s epic Serena Williams vs Qiang Wang Australian Open third round clash and shared his perspective…

“DAVID vs GOLIATH. When your physical gifts are so above all others in your sport you should win. But yes many other things are involved too….mental toughness, heart, determination, grit, competitiveness, etc. But I see Serena Williams as a bully, classless, an excuse maker for bad behavior. A prima donna who is fawned over by so many which confuses me. Don’t we still like the underdog, the humble one, the one who loses with anger but composure? I’ve never been more stumped by an athlete’s popularity as I am by Serena Williams. I was so amazed by Wang Qiang’s tiny self digging so deep and beating the Goliath bully Serena at the Australian Open last night….AWESOME. If you question me on this remember Serena threatened to shove a ball down a female lineswomans throat and Utube the rest……sorry for all who don’t follow tennis.”

An interesting, honest analysis to say the least. Serena is a goliath figure in pro tennis and yet the crowds always do cheer for her as if she was a David.

Sorry Monfils couldn’t trouble Thiem. Monfils! The man plays with a a joy d vie. Thiem does well to make the QF.

  • Jeff · January 26, 2020 at 11:39 pm

Matches today stink so far. Hate when the a gets added to my name. Arg.

  • Jon King · January 26, 2020 at 11:50 pm

WTA is allowing coaching from the stands without penalty on a trial basis. Verbal and hand signals.

  • catherine · January 27, 2020 at 12:55 am

Jeff – why do the matches stink ? WTA Everything going to plan. Halep, Kontaveit, Muguruza. Swiatek put up a fight.

I didn’t stay up to watch. Just in time for Kerber/Pavs.

The WTA will shortly allow coaches to be with the players on court during play. I know this.

  • Jon King · January 27, 2020 at 1:10 am

Tennis coaching is beyond bizarre. Juniors, 8-9-10 years old, no coaching at USTA tournaments except before a match tiebreak. If a parent or coach says a word the other parents explode on them. Yet college players can be coached. WTA players can be coached except slams and its obviously heading to more and more coaching.

What a strange sport where the youngest beginners can not be coached but the best players can.

  • catherine · January 27, 2020 at 6:03 am

Pavs and Kerbs slug away for 2hrs 20 mins in their 15th meeting and Pavs outruns Angie in the 3rd. Pavs 71 winners to 35 made a difference.

  • catherine · January 27, 2020 at 6:21 am

2 hrs 40 mins that was and Pavs meets Mugs next which could be good.

How many 5 set matches has Stan played ? Concrete legs.

  • Hartt · January 27, 2020 at 7:23 am

That was an exciting, high quality match between Rafa and Nick, with Rafa winning in 4 sets. I was impressed with the crowd. They cheered loudly for Nick between points, but generally were quiet when players were about to serve and during the points.

Nick kept himself under control for the most part, and concentrated on his tennis. If he continues to play like this perhaps he will make good use of his talent. But that is still an “if.”

Rafa gets Thiem next, and that should be another good match.

  • Hartt · January 27, 2020 at 7:25 am

Zverev beat Rublev in SS. I am still a Sascha fan, so am thrilled to see him back playing good tennis.

  • catherine · January 27, 2020 at 9:03 am

Angie’s last AO ? Could be. A good match to leave on.
She beats Giorgi and posts an IG victory yell – caption: ‘Here and Now’.

I’ll give her a caption losing to Pavs: ‘Now and Then’.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 9:14 am

Pavs was due, she’s always on the verge/edge of a great win. That looked like a tough match and good for Kerber for pushing it to its distance.

Amazing Muguruza d. Bertens. Thought that was possible, Muguruza wins a few matches before a slam then loses and is ready to dominate. She was making Bertens shake her head from the big shotmaking and Bertens doesn’t strike me as someone that shakes her head.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 9:16 am

Kontaveit and Swiatek put on a show. Amazing Swiatek hit those shots during a match. Kontaveit finally breaks through.

  • Jeff · January 27, 2020 at 9:17 am

Well these last two matches made up for it. Gotta give Nick credit. He did about as well as he could. When the Big 3 leave, I am sure that he has a shot to win a Slam.

Pavs v. Mugs with the spicy Sumyk subplot. I know Catherine will agree with me that Mugs should get her revenge.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 9:20 am

Medvedev falters, Wawrinka avenges US Open loss. All the predictions of Medvedev’s AO wins, including mine, did not come true. That should have been clear from Medvedev’s performance since the Paris Masters.

Miraculously Zverev d. Rublev in straights. No idea how Zverev pulled that off.

And of course Nadal survives Kyrgios. Sorry Kyrgios couldn’t close this out, for Australia etc. Those 7-6 scorelines hide how far away Nadal’s competitors are.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 9:21 am

Sumyk leading the race for coach of the year. pavlyuchenkova vs muguruza will be a good one.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 9:22 am

    Swiatek to win three majors.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 9:25 am

Since Medvedev became a normal guy, normal cliche quotes, he lost his edge and his results have lowered to normal. Anyone notice? Bring back the villain rebel edge asap.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 1:00 pm

Of women’s draw, 4 slam champs in QF. Halep’s the wildcard of the slam champs left. Not sure how Kenin, Jabeur, Kontaveit will fare – the rest of the way to the title is pure courage for these players in excellent tennis form.

    Barty vs Kvitova
    Kenin vs Jabeur
    Kontaveit vs Halep
    Muguruza vs Pavlyuchenkova

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 1:05 pm

Men’s draw, big guys closing in on another shut-out. I thought the Australian was the place for the next gen to dig in and turn the apple cart over. Seems less likely by the match. It would be good for Raonic to break through. I am sure Djokovic has paid some serious money to get the data on Raonic’s serving patterns.

Nadal vs. Thiem, Wawrinka vs. Zverev, Sandgren vs. Federer, Raonic vs. Djokovic.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 1:07 pm

Medvedev…that X on his back grew too large ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Jon King · January 27, 2020 at 1:23 pm

I like Kenin, Kvitova, Halep, Muga to win…..Nadal, Stan, Fed, Joker.

  • Hartt · January 27, 2020 at 1:47 pm

As though Novak doesn’t have enough advantages, Goran, as Milos’ former coach, will know the Raonic game very well. Novak won’t even have to pay extra for that info.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 2:09 pm

Andew, or O Shannessy paid Djokovic to be a part of the team. Like Serena/Mouratoglou and Gauff/Mouratoglou.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 2:10 pm

Djokovic is 9-0 vs Raonic but Raonic might be playing his best tennis now.

  • Hartt · January 27, 2020 at 2:46 pm

Milos is playing very well right now, but Novak is the worst possible match-up for him. Novak, with his brilliant returning, can negate Milos’ main weapon – his serve. Milos has had more success over both Fed and Rafa than he has with Novak.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 2:50 pm

Where’s the evidence O’Shannessy paid Djokovic?

  • Harold · January 27, 2020 at 3:12 pm

Can you post a list of coaches that pay vs coaches that get paid? This gets more hysterical daily.

If SW plays Gauff, where does PM sit? Where he is paying more, or paying less?

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 3:35 pm

Nobody beats Milos ten times in a row Hartt.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 3:40 pm

The Tennis magazine article makes no mention either way if Djokovic pays or 0 Shannessy pays. Because that important fact was left undisclosed, I will try to find out in Miami. It was a disappointment for O Shannessy to be dropped by Djokovic at his home country slam and by the defending champion. It’s a tough sell to get players to buy statistics of tendencies. If O Shannessy had a contract with Djokovic I think those details would have been made public.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 4:17 pm

That’s speculation. They worked together for two yearsm. O’shannessy referred to Djokovic as his client and they parted ways after two years. That analysis re he paid his client looks totally wrong. Last time I checked the client pays the business. If you part ways that means the business relationship ends.

The fact a decision was made at all suggests that he was getting paid and hikes fees following performance, just like a coach. And Djokovic treated him like a coach, and sacked him.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 4:19 pm

Contracts aren’t made public generally. Otherwise everyone would see them.

  • Jon King · January 27, 2020 at 4:37 pm

Mouratoglou barters Gauff in facilities use and other perks. Since she was age 13 she gets to use his academy facilities for training when they are in Europe. Also access to physios there. Not a bad trade off, free place to stay and train in exchange for him getting visibility for his academy being in her box. He also arranged the sessions for her and Serena in Boca Raton with Mike Tyson and a few other celebrities. They held an autograph session that some of our tennis kids went to.

Mouratoglou is in a unique position because he has his own academy. So being seen with Serena and Gauff causes kids to come to his academy and that is where he makes his money. Notice the M logo for his academy is prominent when he and his trainer sits in her box.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 4:39 pm

The article in Tennis says they were to work together again in Melbourne. Obviously Djokovic decided to discard O Shannessy for who knows what reason. If anyone believes O Shannessy discarded Djokovic, feel free to believe that! My guess is the Tennis magazine article gives O Shannessy too much credit for Djokovic’s major title wins. Djokovic does not need O Shannessy, O Shannessy needs Djokovic.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 4:47 pm

O’Shannessy doesn’t have that. He has to pay IBM etc and real vendors for the analytics. Can’t do that be giving free stuff to Djokovic as the highest-earning client. If you sell data you do it by figuring out the highest value data and shielding that from the client, give them some data and then give them a deeper set of data and work with their team so they know how to use it.

The evidence suggests that once Djokovic figured out all this stuff, and once Ivanisevic jumped in and said Djokovic stop with the data stuff (which Ivanisevic did), that Djokovic decided fine, no more.

It may have also bothered Djokovic that O’Shannessy began advising Berrettini – presumably another paying client. Given Berretini’s loss at the Australian I would presume that O’Shannessy has to prove himself again.

  • Andrew Miller · January 27, 2020 at 4:50 pm

My guess is that when you have coaches with egos and guys with data, most of the time the coaches with egos win out. Some people are more open-minded about it – Becker and Ivanisevic are not open-minded about it at all.

Gilbert is open-minded about it. Those other coaches, both of who worked with the data-minded Djokovic, were not. My guess is, speculatively, they didn’t like seeing Djokovic under the influence of someone else. And they probably didn’t trust anyone that would advise Djokovic on data and work with a competitor. I’d guess that was it for them.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 5:10 pm

There is no demand for O Shannessy’s data, he was unknown before Djokovic. He had no leverage to ask Djokovic for anything, it was more profitable for him to give it to Djokovic and hope to grow his business that way. I will try to find out the truth.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 5:12 pm

Mouratoglou is another example. I was told he pays Serena, Gauff and Ngounoue to appear as their coach. Serena never asks for his coaching and she denied his hand signals at US Open were coaching, though he claimed otherwise. I think the picture is pretty clear. He’s piggybacking off Serena and using her to establish himself as a “coach.” Mouratoglou’s track record as a coach before Serena is ordinary at best, none of his players did anything noteworthy. Mouratoglou’s coaching accomplishments or lack thereof are chronicled here. https://www.tennis-prose.com/articles/scoop/did-mouratoglou-mangle-the-womens-final/

  • Jeff · January 27, 2020 at 5:37 pm

I am just guessing here but I would imagine Shaughnessy gave away his info for free since wouldn’t he need to prove its value for Novak to pay him? I would highly doubt Novak paid him anything; just to work with the great Serb is a boost to his statistical career.

Kyrgios played very well and like I said I think he can win a Slam when the Big 3 are gone. But Zverev is my dark horse pick to win it. He seems like he is on a mission.

I think Novak is a nightmare matchup in best of 5 for Milos. I hope Milos can push him to 5 to make it interesting but I doubt it. The real focus is on the Sandgren express to see if he can make sports history by knocking off Fed, Novak and Rafa in succession. What a story that would be and I know we all want to see this happen.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 6:11 pm

Jeff that is the way I see it. Djokovic is the one winning majors, O Shannessy getting 3 pages in Tennis Magazine is three pages of credit that Djokovic deserves. We all know Djokovic knows how to play tennis. I highly doubt these stats helped him win any matches. To my knowledge Djokovic won all his matches and did not on the record publicly credit O Shannessy’s stats for winning anything. The only way this stuff has any value is if Djokovic says to a live microphone, “I won this match because of O Shannessy’s stats.” Maybe they helped him win a few points here and there. Telling the girl in 1995 to attack the net after the third slice is some basic advice that even an armchair champion could generalize. So I highly doubt Djokovic gave O Shannessy anything other than maybe a player guest pass.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 6:12 pm

Kyrgios does not have to win a major to be a champion, he is a people’s champion. Though I do believe Nick has evolved and matured and will win a major if he keeps up this new serious, patient, offensive/defensive, level headed play. He gave Rafa another big scare last night.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2020 at 9:24 pm

Kenin is a machine, all business, great fire, so focused, buzzes around the court between points with a purpose and positive energy. Jabeur looked resigned to defeat from the beginning, as if she knew she was going to lose. Negative body language and facial expression the whole match save for a few good points. Kenin looked like she knew she was going to win. Very impressive player, can win the whole thing. As Stubbs said, “Kenin is not afraid to win this title.”

  • Harold · January 27, 2020 at 11:01 pm

Theyโ€™re playing in Newport Beach. Bouchard goes out to A Glatch( seems like sheโ€™s been around forever) and Ryan Harrison lost to a wildcard

  • Jon King · January 27, 2020 at 11:43 pm

Kenin and her dad have never skipped any steps, a lesson for so many players. At age 5 dad saved every penny from working 2 jobs and hired Rick Macci. Macci taught her perfect technique. He then gave them some free time in exchange for filming several instructional videos made when Kenin was age 5 and 6. We still have our copies of those DVDs. Kenin was just as focused at age 5 as she is now.

Kenin and dad did not cheat to get early wins like many juniors, she did not push and play cautious to get early wins like many juniors. She had to win playing fair and going for her shots.

She had to work her way up through the lowest levels of tournaments. Did lots of strength and conditioning along the way, gradually built her body, mind, and overall game.

The result is a player who may not be the tallest or fastest or most powerful….but who reached 100% of her peak potential by doing things the right way and not cheating the process at any step along the way.

Even now that they can afford more, its just her and dad. Keep the circle small, grind it out match after match.

Her and dad are our tennis role models. And have been from the day I showed my daughter those Macci-Kenin videos when she was barely old enough to hold a racquet.

  • catherine · January 28, 2020 at 2:40 am

I’ve started to notice who looks at their box during matches after winners, and how often and why.

Among women, Kenin (see above) doesn’t, Pavs doesn’t, Simona does all the time, same Kerber, Barty sometimes – I’ll keep score.

Haven’t started on the men yet – do men do this less than women ? Is it just a habit or a confidence thing ? A sign of how well you’re getting on with your coach ?

Federer epic v Sandgren. Fed doesn’t look at his box very often.

  • Hartt · January 28, 2020 at 3:20 am

Fed pulled off a total miracle in winning that match! Even Roger said he was very lucky.

I totally gave up when an injured Fed couldn’t do anything, and just wanted the match to end, to be put out of my misery. I will never doubt Fed during a match again!

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 28, 2020 at 9:02 am

    Did Federer fake the injury?

  • Andrew Miller · January 28, 2020 at 9:20 am

Good news: Raonic, as ranking recovers, should get better draws. Another excellent Australian Open for him when none was expected. I hope he can pull off a Masters win this year. He can still improve a few areas and I hope he and his coaches are excited about this.

His goal should be to pull a Vitas G. on Djokovic ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Andrew Miller · January 28, 2020 at 9:24 am

Remember: Federer struggles against nearly all players he hasn’t played before. Excellent job by Sandgren to play the game this well. I’m still not clear why US players aren’t studying what Sandgren has done to compete in the biggest and best tournaments as a competitor. I can only believe that they don’t work enough on things and that they fall apart when facing larger tennis challenges. And that Sandgren’s competitive tennis knowledge is very high.

Sandgren may even pass Fish, Blake in # of slam QF, or tie Isner, Querrey by the time he hangs up his racquet.

  • Andrew Miller · January 28, 2020 at 9:28 am

Barty really impressive. Kvitova is such a good player. I don’t know if Kvitova can win a slam off grass. She has come so close and runs into the same problems, getting stuck in rallies. She’s no Pat Rafter.

  • Andrew Miller · January 28, 2020 at 9:31 am

Barty vs Kenin another big match. Can Kenin pull this off? I think the home crowd will be too much. This isn’t playing a popular hyped player. This is playing a national hero on their home court. She’ll need the equivalent of mental ear plugs.
