Former NHL player analyzes Serena vs Wang

Kent Carlson was a physical defenseman for the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals back in the 1980s. He also watched last night’s epic Serena Williams vs Qiang Wang Australian Open third round clash and shared his perspective…

“DAVID vs GOLIATH. When your physical gifts are so above all others in your sport you should win. But yes many other things are involved too….mental toughness, heart, determination, grit, competitiveness, etc. But I see Serena Williams as a bully, classless, an excuse maker for bad behavior. A prima donna who is fawned over by so many which confuses me. Don’t we still like the underdog, the humble one, the one who loses with anger but composure? I’ve never been more stumped by an athlete’s popularity as I am by Serena Williams. I was so amazed by Wang Qiang’s tiny self digging so deep and beating the Goliath bully Serena at the Australian Open last night….AWESOME. If you question me on this remember Serena threatened to shove a ball down a female lineswomans throat and Utube the rest……sorry for all who don’t follow tennis.”

An interesting, honest analysis to say the least. Serena is a goliath figure in pro tennis and yet the crowds always do cheer for her as if she was a David.

Never heard of this clown. Serena won 23 Grand Slams. Michael Jordan is about as big a jerk on and off court as there could be. Anyone can google his Hall of Fame Induction speech and see what kind of POS he is. Yet everyone fawns over Jordan.

Larry Bird treated his kids and wife like crap…everyone fawns over him. Kobe Bryant was a jerk to his teammates and cheated on his wife many times.

John McEnroe? Treated people like crap, acted like a total jerk on court. Now, beloved.

So many of the all time greats were and are a holes. So?

Interesting that he picked Serena out for his wrath. Imagine that….a 58 year old white guy, and all the total jerks great athletes he has seen over his long life….and the black lady is the one who draws his fire.

  • Harold · January 25, 2020 at 12:34 am

Probably a drunk tweet by an old hockey player who couldn’t remember where he left his dentures

  • Dan Markowitz · January 25, 2020 at 5:17 am

Never heard Larry Bird was a tyrant to his wife and kids. And I covered both Bird and Jordan and Jordan while he definitely competed hard, he was a good if not great sportsman. He played under Dean Smith in college. Smith would not have let him be a bad one.

But I agree, hockey player, great diversity in that sport. Serena has has had her boorish moments on and off the court in pressers, but she’s 38, she’s had a kid, she;s one of the greatest female competitors in any sport. She;s still the no. 1 player most fans want to watch play and that’s because she’s a great champion and overall, seemingly a great person and she’s gone through a lot in her life from growing up in an impoverished area; being thrust full-force into a sport with very few black players; to Indian Wells debacle, to her parents’ divorce, to losing a sister. The list goes on and on, but she’s still competing hard and never talks about anything but going for slam championships.

  • Jon King · January 25, 2020 at 8:47 am

Bird’s daughter Corrie Bird gave plenty of interviews in the 1990s where she detailed Bird’s apathy towards her.

  • Jon King · January 25, 2020 at 9:05 am

Dan, Jordan was a total jerk. Not only did he push off on both his biggest game winners, his hall of fame speech had the audience cringing. Plenty of examples of him treating people like garbage and being a jerk are out there.

    https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1943095-top-10-stories-of-michael-jordan-being-the-greatest-jerk-of-all-time#slide2

  • Dan Markowitz · January 25, 2020 at 9:25 am

Complicated guy, Jordan. Greatest competitor any sport has ever seen in my opinion. I think having his father killed in his 20’s, who he was really close to, snapped something in him. It’s got to be tough to see guys like Kobe and LeBron compared to him when he thinks or knows in his heart of hearts these guys wouldn’t match him when the stakes were highest.

I don’t know, most superstars, Mac, Connors, Borg, Mickey Mantle, Bill Russell, were not very nice guys. They didn’t think much about others; weren’t compassionate. It’s just the nature of the beast I guess. But none of them as far as I know and Serena hasn’t either, went on to do heinous acts.

  • Harold · January 25, 2020 at 9:34 am

Jordan and Bird did commit heinous crimes…took the heart out of Knick fans for 15 years.

Birds dad committed suicide..Jordan’s dad murdered….these guys went through crazy stuff..why am I supposed to automatically believe Birds daughter, don’t know both
    Sides

Dan becoming SW’s biggest fan is quite the 360. If I remember back in the day, not so much

  • Jon King · January 25, 2020 at 9:51 am

I am sure we can debate the character of all the greats. All humans have plus and minuses.

But in this case, seems interesting how this former hockey guy choose to take a stand on Serena. She certainly has had her share of regrettable episodes….but so have pretty much all the greats.

  • Dan Markowitz · January 25, 2020 at 10:35 am

I’m not a big Serena Williams fan. I’ve said many times that she is an exciting player to watch at times because of her strokes and power and emotion, but her game is not diverse or very artistic. As for her personality, I’ve also said she’s a diva which doesn’t really appeal to me, but she’s got a lot of charisma and I just think both Venus and her have done something no one 30 years ago could’ve imagined two black girls from Compton who’s parents had no experience with tennis to say nothing about high-level tennis, could ever have done> I mean this is tennis, a very exclusive sport, the most exclusive of any major spectator sport I’d think.

  • Harold · January 25, 2020 at 11:20 am

I think her footwork and strokes are horrible, and getting older isn’t helping..Her Serve, competitive spirit, and scaring the crap out of scared little girls has taken her to the top..credit and respect..

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 25, 2020 at 2:18 pm

Dan, so you think the NHL should balance diversity and add more blacks to rosters? Do you hold the NBA to the same edict, that more whites must be on NBA and NFL rosters?

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 25, 2020 at 2:20 pm

Hingis said the Williams sisters being black was actually an advantage for them. I found quotes where Serena was asked if she ever encountered racism in tennis and she had no answer to give. INdian Wells was caused by the Williams cheating the ticket buyers out of a semi when Richard pulled Venus out of the semi and left the ticket buyers cheated. Venus had no injury and played Miami the next week. The ticket buyers were very upset by the fake injury pullout by Venus and booed their discontent. In sports and pro wrestling the fans can boo or cheer whatever they want. It had nothing to do with racism.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 25, 2020 at 2:22 pm

Kent is not taking a stand against Serena, he just offered his thoughts on the match. One former pro athlete commenting on an athlete from another sport. Serena not giving Wang any credit at all was disgusting. Wang played the match of her life and Serena gave her no praise at all. Wang made Serena make those errors with her excellent play. Sometimes Serena can be a real jerk in defeat.

  • Kent Carlson · January 26, 2020 at 7:25 am

Im a big tennis fan. Played it for years. Id be an idiot to pick on Serena because of race. People who say that offend me. Hated McEnroe’s behavior too but im not going to prove crap to anyone over that. Scoop said it so well how Serena also can never credit an opponent after a loss either!! Its so egotistical, selfish!! Its always that she played poorly or had an off day!! COME ON!!!

  • Dan Markowitz · January 26, 2020 at 8:02 am

Look I have as little interest in hockey as I do in soccer. Probably less with hockey. I’m not criticizing the sport, I never played it, it just bores me. As for its diversity, it has little of it. At least basketball has the European leagues and college where a lot of the players are white.its true, white American are a dying breed in NBA basketball. They either don’t think they have a cjance to make the NBA anymore because it’s a game predicated more on athleticism or they become fringe players like a Kyle Korver. Kevin Love and Gordon Hayward are the only semi-white American stars in the NBA today.

Am I shocked a white European hockey player doesn’t like Serena? No. Once Serena is gone and only Gauff is a great black American player, there won’t be as much dissent as all the ova’s will take over again with their thin legs and braided blond hair and things will be back to order. Serena’s rocked the boat in more ways than on the court and her outrageous father tipped it over. There are no Chris Evert’s becoming no. 1 anymore, but at least white European’s will be happy with a Halek or Kerber gaining the top spot again or their successors.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 8:20 am

Dan don’t racialize it. People can dislike serenas behavior and poor sportsmanship while still respecting. It’s ok to criticize Serena, sometimes she deserves it. You seem to pretend its illegal to question or rebuke Serena. When someone does bad, they deserve to be called on it.

  • catherine · January 26, 2020 at 8:34 am

I’m a white European and I don’t care what colour a person is who occupies the top spot in tennis and I’m sure plenty of other white Europeans share my views. But I dislike Serena’s downgrading of her opponents when they win – eg saying Halep and Kerber’s Wimbledons ‘don’t count’, and dismissing Wang at the AO. It’s unnecessary.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 9:00 am

Catherine it’s horrible when Serena does that, she is one of the best champions in female tennis history but her poor sportsmanship disqualifies her from the top spot IMO. Graf and Court were true champions. Serena is not. Her display at US Open a year and a half ago was the ugliest episode in Grand Slam history.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 9:08 am

I think Serena deep down knows she can’t do it anymore, she will not get 24. The girls like Wang have passed her out, they are better than her now, tougher, smarter, better. Serena knows it and is trying to psyche them out by belittling them. But it’s making her look bad and it’s throwing dirt on her own legacy. The media will keep protecting her and turning a blind eye to her episodes and tell us what a wonderful mother and champion she is. That is the agenda. The Tennis Lord works in mysterious ways doesn’t he?

  • catherine · January 26, 2020 at 9:09 am

And just for fun I’ll point out that Martina Navratilova wasn’t a natural blonde, and neither is Chris Evert.

And Kerber hasn’t got thin legs and Halep doesn’t braid her hair and isn’t blonde either. Neither are her legs noticeably thin.

    I could go on.

  • Jeff · January 26, 2020 at 9:50 am

Serena is as much of a jerk as Jordan was for sure. Both are beloved but yes, they are both big-time jerks. In any case, to the victor goes the spoils and in life many, many classless people succeed. I think you all know what I mean.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 10:23 am

The real American tennis hero right now is Tennys Sandgren. Again he’s the last American man standing, and he just demolished Fognini and all his gamesmanship BS with spectacular performance. It was pointed out Sandgren has a better record vs top 20 than most of the elite players. Sandgren is a major success story, the guy did not win one single ATP main draw match for SIX YEARS until he finally beat Sugita at Citi Open at 1130 at night on court 3. Two years ago, that was his first ever ATP main draw win after six years of Futures and Challengers and failing I think 9 times in Grand Slam qualies. Unbelievable story. We should be talking about Sandgren, enough of Serena and her idiot excuses at press conferences.

  • Dan Markowitz · January 26, 2020 at 11:17 am

To Kent Carlson, nice to have you on Tennis-Prose, please contribute more of your opinions. Scoop, I love it when you say the media protectsSerena. It seems to me she gets her share of criticism from the media especially two years ago with the Osaka match.

Jeff is right. If Serena won only a handful of slams; if she wasn’t still a big story in the game at age 38 and after all the Capriati’s, Hingis’, and Clinsters’ and Henin’s have long since our their racquets down, she wouldn’t get a pass for her boorish behavior in not praising opponents who deserve it.

Love of the game; building the game’s popularity; iconic figure; Saturday night US Open women’s final prime-time; this is all mostly because of Serena. It’s not like we haven’t seen Federer also not praise opponent’s in defeat too. So please, a lot of it is about race. Stay in your place Black Woman. You may be the GOAT, but you never got the endorsements of a Maria Sharapova who couldn’t compete with you and also was caught taking PED’s. Can you imagine the outpouring of clamor if it was Serena and Venus who got caught with PED’s? I’m sorry, Venus and Serena aren’t perfect, but they’ve been very good examples of how to balance long successful careers along with becoming mostly exemplary human beings.

  • Jon King · January 26, 2020 at 11:24 am

Fognini’s act cracks me up because we have seen a good number of mini Fognini’s in training in juniors over the years.

At a junior tournament there will be the 12-13 year old boy, good player, everything matches from his wristbands to his shoes. He yells “ayeeeee” or something else that sounds cool after every shot. All the girls think he is sooooo cute. The referees allow him to get by with more antics than anyone else. He preens, saunters, fixes his a little too longish hair, yells at his parents and coach when he misses, who just smile back at him, he tosses the balls in disgust, tosses his racquet. You know….just imagine Fognini at age 12.

Good for Sandgren to overcome the nonsense.

  • Jon King · January 26, 2020 at 11:32 am

John McEnroe’s poor behavior, awwww, lets make a cute commercial about it. Serena’s poor behavior, see, she is a terrible person. Enough said.

  • Kent Carlson · January 26, 2020 at 11:34 am

Im American btw. Born, brought up here. Can’t stand people trying to say its race, her size, her looks etc that are the reason anyone ever criticizes her!! I think she is beautiful but i don’t care about that. I care that people see her as a great role model. She is a role model for her hard work but not for her behavior and my own son see’s that too. If she was called out more by brave people like Scoop than maybe a tad of humility would be something she would consider. But people enable her…she is not the example of sportsmanship that any kid should think is….

  • catherine · January 26, 2020 at 12:50 pm

Jon – that’s simplistic. Maybe because I’m not American I don’t see things the same way. I thought some of Mac’s behaviour indicated that at the time he pretty much was a terrible person and plenty of people felt free to say so. I really don’t care about Serena’s colour but I care that in disparaging her opponents she’s insulting them as competitors and taking away their pride in accomplishment. Not that I imagine Halep or Kerber, in the case of Wimbledon, would be bothered about it. They know Serena. But it’s unsporting and selfish of her and deserves criticism.

  • Andrew Miller · January 26, 2020 at 1:41 pm

Sorry to say, we don’t know the player’s lives. Truly don’t. For all I know Gauff receives hate mail and that’s why she has a twitter video addressed to her haters after winning her first WTA title. In fact she receives tons of messages that told her she was a one-timer.

Who are we to say you know what, she should just deal with it. Guess what…she is.

Or when Donald Young was sent plenty of twitter messages that were equally horrendous.

Don’t under-estimate the mean spirited-ness and cruelty directed at players. There is plenty of venom directed their way and that is likely why so many people say awful things about Serena Williams.

Do I like that she says it was more about me than my opponent? No. But do you like it when Margaret Court goes out of her way to talk about how she’s the greatest that ever lived, and says some very spiteful things?

You can dislike both of them. But there’s plenty of invective send Serena’s way. That comes with her celebrity and also with people just wanting her to do badly.

I don’t. I respect her and her game too much. I don’t like what she says sometimes. But I don’t like what Federer says some times, and I don’t like what Nadal says some times either. You’re just not going to like what everyone says.

There’s no requirement either. If I were to advise players I’d say don’t be uncharitable because you don’t want to give a player an edge next time you play them. Be generous. And be honest about your own game and things you need to look at. Just be frank in an informed way.

  • Andrew Miller · January 26, 2020 at 1:45 pm

Connors was cruel sometimes, too. Then people loved him. But he was a first class jerk.

So what do you take away? First, great competitor and great player. Never say die. Knew the crowd was part of the match, brilliant stuff.

And, don’t do what he did. Don’t be mean. Don’t put your opponent down like Connors did after playing Courier and Courier iced him for the final against Edberg at the US Open in 1991. Courier seriously believed he was a contender and wouldn’t give a scintilla of credit to Courier, and it was ugly to see that.

So you can love Connors for his competitiveness. But you can dislike him for it, too.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 1:58 pm

Jon, McEnroe never threatened violence at an official or to kill. Serena went way over the line McEnroe drew.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 2:02 pm

Dan, Serena locked the drug tester out of her house and she hid in her panic room. Dodged the test, should have been banned like Troicki who did the same thing. Venus and Serena are both allegedly on the therapeutic use exemption list to use PEDs, but nobody in the media is able to obtain that TUE list information, it remains secret. Serena may be a worse drug cheat than Maria but with better protection. Fact is Serena ducked that drug test at her home which is a very serious violation, as Triocki found out.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 2:10 pm

Agree Kent, Serena is a bad very bad example of sportsmanship. Good examples – Djokovic, Barty, Rafa, Murray, Delpo, Stan, Goffin, Agut, Raonic, Felix, Tsitsipas, Federer, Thiem, Hsieh, Halep, Keys, Konta, Kenin, Wang, Suarez Navarro, Kuznetsova, Pliskova, etc.

  • Dan Markowitz · January 26, 2020 at 3:00 pm

    Scoop,

You make good points about Serena dodgy PED evasion tactics. She’s not a great sportswoman and that’s important to me. My son just got awarded the 2019 USTA Eastern Sportsmanship Award and was given four tickets to the Feb.15th NY Open semis where he’ll be honored. So Callum does display good sportsmanship and I told him it’s rare for the no. Player in a section’s age group to also receive the Sportsmanship Award and that shines very well on him.

To Kent Carlson, I’m sorry I thought you were European like the Dane player I used to like, the lefty Kenneth Carlsson.

  • Dan Markowitz · January 26, 2020 at 3:20 pm

Got to hand it to Sandgren. He’s a warrior and could have easily been a Challenger casualty, but here he is in second slam quarters. How about Fed’s easy draw so far; to get to slam semis he’s had to beat MILLMAN, Fucosvics and now Sandgren.

  • catherine · January 26, 2020 at 3:20 pm

Andrew – Margaret Court is an old lady now and says a lot of odd stuff but when she was a player she was always courteous to her opponents – at least I never heard otherwise. Certainly not spiteful or boastful. That wasn’t the Australian way.

  • Andrew Miller · January 26, 2020 at 3:55 pm

Sometimes the draw gods smile 🙂

  • Andrew Miller · January 26, 2020 at 3:56 pm

Yeah, a stain on the M. Court legacy. So be it.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 4:04 pm

No Dan, Kent Carlson is not a European, he’s a super tough American. One of the toughest guys in the 1980s, check out this video of Kent, while with the Montreal Canadiens (red sweater) giving my childhood hockey hero Paul Holmgren a drubbing in Minnesota. This was a big fight in the NHL that made a lot of people including Fred Shero, say Whoa. Very few people could do that to Paul Holmgren. Congrats on Callum he just keeps adding to his impressive credentials as a champion tennis player. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KS9FZdU-D0A

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 4:13 pm

Court was and is a class champion. She simply adheres to the Bible and strict conservative values and is not afraid to speak for it. Respect for her bravery in doing that in these modern times where she is subject to constant attacks and character assassination.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 4:15 pm

There is no stain on Court’s legacy, she is a great champion and always will be. She is brave enough to stand up and fight for what she believes in. A true champion. BJ King is honored and saluted and celebrated for standing up for what she believed in. So too should Margaret Court.

  • Hartt · January 26, 2020 at 4:37 pm

How great that Callum won the Sportsmanship award – very impressive!

  • Harold · January 26, 2020 at 4:40 pm

I thought it might be Kent Carlsson the Swedish tennis player from the early 80’s

  • Andrew Miller · January 26, 2020 at 5:09 pm

Uh ok, Scoop. Whatever, man! No, please, no one celebrate Margaret Court’s opinion. She’s entitled to it. But it’s a mess. It is as offensive to her peers as a player as it is to the world at large.

She will always be a great champion. But greatness on the court isn’t the same as grace off it. Her views off it aren’t charitable. And they do end up taking away from her achievements, especially given her competitors end up being the targets of them. Which is too bad.

It is what it is. They don’t take away slams for what people think. She earned those. As well as the scorn afterwards for saying some things that don’t check out.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 5:32 pm

Andrew, Equal prize money is just as offensive to some, so is equality. But we move on. Differences of opinions make the world go round. I like Sandgren to beat Federer and Jabeur to win the title, now don’t shoot me!

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 5:34 pm

I did a Biofile with the Tunisian tornado Ons Jabeur https://www.tennis-prose.com/bios/biofile-ons-jabeur-interview/

  • Andrew Miller · January 26, 2020 at 5:58 pm

For sure. Like I said, tennis balls don’t care what anyone things!

  • Andrew Miller · January 26, 2020 at 6:02 pm

Sandgren’s showing at slams is impressive. The guy is a big match player. I thought he had a lot in the tank on the challengers. He should be an inspiration to other challenger players. I don’t know if any are wise enough to ask him how he has performed like this on big stages.

He said he likes playing for few as much as for tons of people, so he is a gamer. I appreciate the gamers out there. I hope other players get inspired to put up these results. I have to believe at some level that Sandgren lives for tennis. With his two QF slam showing he becomes one of the best U.S. men on the biggest stages since Roddick’s retirement. Only Querrey and Isner have more QF appearances among active U.S. men.

He has put to shame all the young U.S. men, though some have shown some promise and some potential and desire to do well at these events. It will be interesting if any are curious enough to try to do what Sandgren has done, and live for the big events.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2020 at 6:23 pm

My take on Sandgren – and I do know him pretty well, we talked for over a half an hour twice, first in Sarasota, and in Tallahassee, also a long conversation in DC after his very first ATP main draw win two years ago at 1130 at night. He was not even the no. 1 guy at UT, Rhyne Williams was. He had a slow progression into the pros, the results did not come, he was stuck well outside top 100, was stuck in Futures and Challenger for six years, kept falling short in his Grand Slam qualies attempts and there were injuries, a hip a believe. I actually saw his breakout in 2017 at Sarasota Open, he beat Opelka 76 in the third in the first round from two breaks down. Huge win. Made finals and lost to Tiafoe. Then he got the most points on that WC circuit (Savannah, Tally) and got his first main draw entry into a major in Paris but lost 1R. Finally got his first main tour win at Citi Open vs Sugita in a tough 3 setter, beat Kyrgios the next night, incredible display, Nick took him lightly. Then in January came the Aus Open run to QF. We talked again last year in Sarasota where he made finals (lost to Paul) and Tally before he beat Kozlov. Very intelligent guy, great athlete, took a while to mature, said he had some bad moments in Futures and Challengers, mistreating people, kids. But he learned how to deal with the emotions and became a better person and competitor. He learned not to talk politics or controversy anymore in public, just stick to tennis. His career has taken off. He went from being a sore sport to really popular and well liked by ballkids and volunteers and adults. As we see, he’s a fantastic athlete, mover, mentally tough fighter, big forehand, backhand and serve too. Guys like Fognini underestimate him as a sub journeyman grinder. And he gets up for big matches. He won Brisbane last January with some super tennis. He parted ways with former coach Carseten Ball last spring and was on his own the rest of the year with USTA’s Brian Baker. Mike Russell is obviously clicking better. Can’t put a limit on anything Sandgren does now. He’s impossible to read. Should make the Olympics now with Isner and Querrey expected to decline as they did in Rio.

  • Jeffa · January 26, 2020 at 10:48 pm

Kent is right. Serena should be admired for her tennis but her sportsmanship is about as bad as it gets. And yes, too many people enable such behavior – threatening a lineswoman, yelling I am a mother. I am not a fan nor do I root against her but her act is worn out.

I also disagree that she gets more abuse than others. Federer fans constantly abuse both Novak and Rafa. I am certain Novak gets more hate than anyone since the Rafa fans pile it on him as well. Not like Sharapova has fans to go after Serena and what would they say anyway, my player can’t beat yours?

Sandgren should be getting more due as the last American left. It speaks well for the Challenger tour. If he can beat Fed, Novak and Rafa to win the tournament, it would be the greatest story in sports history. I think he can knock off Fed and am confident he will win at least one set.

  • Andrew Miller · January 26, 2020 at 11:20 pm

Kontaveit-Swiatek down to wire; Bertens-Muguruza, may not seem like it, should be quite a match.
