Fonseca Floundering But On Pace With Federer

Joao Fonseca lost another match today at Cincy Open to Terence Atmane 63 64. His career has stagnated since spring with a series of unimpressive flops at ATP tournaments after his sensational breakout performance at Miami Open and the thrilling win vs Learner Tien.

Right now Fonseca is ranked 52 in the world. He will turn 19 on August 21. So far Fonseca has a 20-20 record in the ATP and he’s won one title. His highest ranking was 47 which was achieved last month.

Roger Federer also struggled when he was 18. For six months Federer stagnated around 120 in the world but eventually figured out the dilemma and learned how to win more matches. By the time he turned 19 in August 2000 he was ranked 40 in the world.

Federer’s first ATP title was won in 2001 at Milan vs Julien Boutter. His first Grand Slam title was earned at 2003 Wimbledon vs Mark Philippoussis.

So though some of the tennis media and ATP World Tour observers are criticizing Fonseca’s ordinary results this summer, he’s about on pace with Federer at the same age. Federer would be ranked 13 in the world by age 20.

So the Brazilian dynamo is learning the details and nuances of being an elite player and his trajectory so far is comparable to Roger Federer.
