Fiery Felix Slays Fritz At United Cup

The biggest surprise of the new season happened yesterday. Felix Aliassime Auger suddenly utilized emotional adrenaline to snatch a very impressive victory from Taylor Fritz in United Cup.

Felix was down a set and a break and was two points away from defeat at 45 30 all in the second when all the sudden the normally stoic and reserved prodigy showed flashes of young Lleyton Hewitt and Rafael Nadal.

Felix suddenly started grunting and fighting as if his career was on the line. And guess what? The change of mindset produced scorching winners all over the court. It was an astonishing transformation, a former junior prodigy, turned superstar prospect who then struggled with journeyman results, suddenly erupting and emerging into a top 5 caliber elite player.

Felix blasted the world no. 4 American Fritz off the court 46 75 63, which is a rare feat these days as Fritz can pummel the ball as hard as just about anyone. The win was revenge for Felix who was 0-2 career vs Fritz two close three set losses in 2022 at ATP Cup and ATP Finals.

It is very clear now Felix has a burning desire to return to the elite pantheon of the ATP or even higher and what he showed vs Fritz bodes well for this 2025 season. The 24 year old has a huge appetite for tennis destruction and does not want to linger around at no. 29 in the world for much longer.

It’s possible this was one of the most important wins in the career of Aliassime Auger. “No one can predict the future,” the polite well spoken gentleman said to the media after the triumph. “I’ve been training good. I’ve been feeling better physically. It’s really gratifying for myself and everybody that works daily with me because sometimes you feel like you’re practicing well, putting in hard work, but you don’t always get the results. Taylor is one of the top players in the world right now. He also works hard, puts in time, is ambitious. Today, yeah, I can say I’m really happy it went my way because it’s a really good feeling for everybody involved.”

Even more impressive is that this victory came a day after Felix lost to Borna Coric 60 46 46 despite a 60 20 lead.

It will be intriguing to watch how Felix progresses this year and how he will continue to utilize his new weapon of emotional adrenaline.

Felix is not the only player showing max intensity early in the season. The Cobolli vs Humbert match was more thrilling than some Grand Slam finals, all out grunting fighting high level match won by the Italian very impressively. The new season is off to a fantastic start. Nick lost a nailbiter to Perricard 67 76 67, not a bad start as we know Perricard is a monster nightmare to play with that power game and serve.

Nishikori beat Shapovalov and he had two Grand Slam champions coaching him in his box – Chang and Johansson. That has to be a first Chang is ranked 106 now.

Christina McHale is making a comeback, she lost this month in Tampa $25k in 2r from qualies. Beat Price in main draw then lost to Kalieva. Makes you wonder why she “retired” a few years ago?
