Tennis legend Jimmy Connors made a curious analysis of the 2025 Wimbledon final this week. The former world no. 1 and winner of 109 ATP tournaments said he thought Carlos Alcaraz “gave up too easily” in the final against his arch rival Jannik Sinner.
While most tennis observers viewed Alcaraz’s 64 46 46 46 defeat to Sinner as a hard fought, authentic contest, apparently Connors saw it differently.
Though the tenacious Spaniard is known worldwide for his extraordinary fighting spirit and super human effort levels, the experienced and astute eyes of Connors detected that Carlos didn’t play up to his maximum level.
Carlos lead the head to head rivalry vs Sinner by 8-4 before Sunday’s final and had won the last five times they clashed including the 2025 Roland Garros final in an electrifying five sets 46 67 64 76 76. For Connors to suggest Carlos “gave up too easily” vs Sinner is a fascinating allegation, which fuels suspicions that the manufactured rivalry is not entirely organic. Both Carlos and Sinner are sponsored by Nike and Rolex.
Connors has raised a red flag about the Sinner vs Carlos rivalry which now will come under heavy scrutiny on their future duels.
Carlos currently lead the head to head rivalry by 8-5. Carlos won their first meeting at 2019 Alicante Challenger R64 62 36 63.
