Danielle Collins Says Self Expression Is Vital

Former Grand Slam runner-up Danielle Collins revealed a secret to her success after beating Emma Raducanu in three sets in Strasbourg today: “To be good at anything, self expression is really important. There aren’t many successful people that feel like they can’t be themselves. I’m a competitor at the end of the day. I’m not meek and mild.”

“I’m not someone that’s just going through life quietly. And I want to succeed. And I know what it takes to succeed. And at this level you have to compete. And this is what competing’s about. You have to bring the energy, showing positive emotions, sometimes showing negative emotions and being upset with yourself. And then trying to work through those moments.”

Ha ha. If my memory’s correct I recall Collins beating Angie Kerber 6-0 6-0 in Aust.some years ago when Angie was ranked above her. Angie took a lengthy bathroom break at some point to no effect. Danielle pressed on.

    Their handshake was cool.

Collins is a bad ass, the outsider who made it big. Her father was a self employed landscaper in Florida. She’s the antithesis of billionaires Pegula and Navarro who never had to deal with money pressure in tennis which is something that capsizes many careers.

I’m glad she didn’t retire. Perhaps her dog Crash has inspired her. 🙂

I knew from the get go she was not going to retire. Not when she’s making millions per year and still an elite contender at all Grand Slams. I think there’s a behind the scenes story about that whole publicity stunt that we will never know about. The dog sideshow is another good publicity stunt. These modern players know how to self promote and maximize their popularity. Tommy Paul’s stunt about the truck repo is another good one, everybody is talking about it. Tennis needs these off court sideshows to talk about, instead of forehand and backhand questions. )
