Cressy Ends Seven Match Losing Streak, Paire Misery Continues

American Maxime Cressy, ranked 65 in the world, won his first ATP main draw match today in Munich since reaching the round of 16 in January at Australian Open (loss to Medvedev).

Today Cressy defeated Dan Evans 64 64. He had lost seven first round main draw matches in a row since AO.

Cressy was in the final of the year’s first tournament in Melbourne (loss to Nadal) and so now the 24 year old has a 10-9 record for 2022.

Not as fortunate as Cressy, Benoit Paire lost for the 12th time in 2022 in Estoril to Soonwoo Kwon 64 75, the same guy he lost to last week in Barcelona 64 64. Cressy’s only ATP main tour wins this year were in the first two rounds of Australian Open. He also won a round at Phoenix Challenger.

The 32 year old Paire is currently ranked 60 despite his two years of poor results.

Like Fognini, Monfils, Paire is perhaps THE most inconsistent player on tour. Who is more inconsistent? Guy has top 10 stuff (no one would disagree) but can’t put it together. On any given night he can beat a top 10 player or lose to someone ranked 300. I remember early on he was a racket-smashing regular… don’t see the temper as much these days. I root for him but it’s pretty much understood that he’ll beat himself. I saw a match in maybe November against Jele Sels where Paire was up 5-1 in the 3rd and blew it.

Cory, Paire has zero confidence right now, he has lost so many close matches over and over and over for the last two years now. Now when he gets in the next close match, he crumbles again like all the other times. He should consult with Spadea who also went through a similar heartbreaking slump of losing 21 first rounds in a row. But Spadea fought out of it and McEnroe and Hewitt said it was very impressive how Spadea never gave up and dug out of his deep hellhole of losing misery.
