Coach Andy Murray One And Done?

Former ATP World No. 1 Andy Murray made it clear after retiring a couple of years ago that he wants to help coach a WTA or ATP player.

He did coach Novak Djokovic for a few months and the results were substandard, producing no major titles for the 24-time Grand Slam winner.

Since Djokovic and Murray ended their collaboration this spring, Murray has not been asked to coach any players. This is a surprise considering the enormous wisdom Murray has to share with players who haven’t won any important titles yet.

Many players are unwilling to attach themselves to a high profile legend like Murray because it can be intimidating and also the larger than life presence overshadows the player.

The most successful example of a super coach helping a player is probably Ivan Lendl who helped Murray win his first Grand Slam title at US Open. But there have been more than a few failures – Lendl with Zverev, Agassi with Djokovic, Rios with Shang, Navratilova with Radwanska, Connors with Sharapova.

Today there are a handful of quality baseline players who seemingly would benefit very much from the knowledge of Murray such as Tommy Paul, Emma Raducanu, Taylor Fritz, Jaume Munar, Alex deMinaur, Felix, Stefanos, Tiafoe, Michelsen, Nakashima, Norrie, Fonseca, among others.

Murray should be a hot coaching commodity of infinite value despite failing in his first and only opportunity so far with Djokovic. The way things are trending now, it’s possible the great Andy Murray may never get a coaching job offer again.
