Biofile: Soonwoo Kwon Interview

By Scoop Malinowski

Status: ATP no. 70.

First Tennis Memory: When I was ten. I loved all sports like soccer, badminton and tennis.

Ht: 5-11 Wt: 159

DOB: December 12, 1997 In: Sangju, South Korea

Tennis Hero: Roger.

Tennis Inspiration: Like the fame and honor.

First Famous Player You Met Or Encountered: Hyung Taik Lee in Korea. Around ten years ago there was a charity event that Hyung Taik did with juniors.

Greatest Career Moment (so far): First time I qualified for main draw at Wimbledon last year.

Most Painful Moment: So even though I had pretty good results, the summer swing last year. Atlanta, Los Cabos, all the Masters before US Open, it was my first time on the journey. It was overwhelming. I had to modify and reschedule my schedules. New places every week. It was my first time. I enjoyed it but it was kinda hard.

Favorite Tournaments: Los Cabos and Montreal. I like the resort feeling, relaxing and the hospitality.

Three Athletes You Like To Watch & Follow: I like Kei Nishikori. And Novak Djokovic. And then Marin Cilic.

Why Do You Love Tennis: I like all sports. But I think this is the one I can really enjoy. Sometimes I feel I can release my stress in tennis better than in other sports.

Which Match Did You Feel At Your Best: First round Wimbledon last year, lost to Khachanov four sets.

Embarrassing Tennis Memory: This year in Kooyong Classic, I played against Raonic. Somehow I got too nervous and I felt embarrassed to stay on the court [smiles]. (Score?) 26 26.

Strangest Match: Semifinals doubles Eddie Herr. I teamed up with Seong Chan Hong and we played against Rublev and Zverev. Before the match we fell asleep together on the grass. We slept till the last minute [laughs]. And then match started and we were surprised because they were playing I formation which is uncommon in the juniors. We were behind love-five. We just woke up. And then we came back and won 8-5 [laughs].

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Haagen Dazs. (Flavor?) Cookies and cream.

Last Book Read: No. I don’t like books [smiles].

People Qualities Most Admired: Being courteous, gentle to everyone. Being nice to everyone. Passionate. And stay positive.

He sounds like a nice guy. Too bad about not liking books, though!

Very nice, very gentle off court but a lion on court, lots of muted cmons and fist pumps. I counted 9 and 3 of each in first set. He is too busy busting up the rankings for reading books right now. Another big win today vs harrison.

7-0 in tiebreak. R. Harrison should feel good about playing well. I think if Harrison keeps this up against good players like Kwon he should get back to his form and make some nice runs this summer.

Great fight by Harrison. He pushed Kwon hard and provoked the triple cmoncmoncmons from him. New level of intensity from kwon.
