Biofile Eliot Spizzirri Interview

By Scoop Malinowski

Status: ATP no. 128.

Ht: 6-1 Wt: 175

DOB: December 23, 2001 In: Greenwich, CT

First Tennis Memory: Playing tennis with my grandfather at a club in Connecticut.

Tennis Inspirations: Roger Federer – the first person I remember watching on TV. All the American greats – James Blake, his brother Thomas is here helping me a lot.

First Famous Player I Met Or Encountered: I hit with Roger Federer at US Open. But that wasn’t the first one. I got invited to hit with Andy Murray in Greenwich where I live which was really cool because he was very personable and cool, he was very sort of encouraging and talkative and kind of interacted with me and that was special. I think I met Roddick before, when I was young. I met Murray in England at an exhibition thing.

Last Book Read: I’m reading a book now… The Power Of Now. I’m almost done, have like five pages left.

Current Car: Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Greatest Sports Moment: Qualifying at US Open (2024). In front of my friends and family (beat Joao Fonseca in a three set marathon thriller).

Most Painful Moment: Losing the national championship (with University of Texas).

Why Do You Love Tennis: I love the one on one, individuality of it. You’re out there… your best versus the other guy’s best. Nowhere to hide. That boxing mentality. And I have a love for hitting the ball. It’s cliche to say… I remember when I was seven, hitting a tennis ball was more fun for me than kicking a soccer ball.

Which Match Did You Feel At Your Best: Probably the Fonseca match. I lost match points in the second set, many of them, to qualify for the Open. And I just remember it not rattling me because I was so in the zone, having so much fun. I didn’t even think twice about it. Those blown opportunities. I was in the flow state. A little bit of parts of Miami Open this year. I was kind of in the zone in that third set (vs. Billy Harris).

Funny Tennis Memory: When I was twelve years old I pissed in my pants during a point. Twelve years old and one bathroom break a match or you get coded. I was playing a point trying to hold it in. I didn’t have a change of shorts. My dad gave me his shorts. Or I could have played in underwear and I was still playing with the wet shorts. If I remember it correctly. Real rough. That was pretty crazy.

Strangest Match: I had some lopsided ones. I remember I was playing Australian Open juniors and a ballkid got hit in the face when my opponent shanked a ball. She was young and we had to stop play. I think the strangest thing was getting under hand serve aced two points in a row by Corentin Moutet in Newport two years ago. On center court. On the grass twice in a row I got aced underhand by him. That was probably the craziest thing that ever happened to me. That will never happen again I think. I think I’m the only guy that ever got aced twice in a row underhand.

Favorite Sport Outside Tennis: Golf.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Cookies and cream.

Two rain delays Monday but full action was completed. Very good crowd, there is no drop in the vibe despite 250 status to 125 Challenger, in fact its a better vibe now w wta. Its all the same level of Atp players anyway and the tennis sells itself with the atmosphere, big stars not needed. Bouchard is the star here with Noah Rubin as her coach and companion. A bunny rabbit visited the center court during McHale match vs Miyuzuki. I did a biofile with Hartono. Kozlov vs Krueger was a good three setter, their tenth atp meeting, now 5-5 after Mitch prevailed in three. Saw Mannarino practicing his serve on hard court.
