Viktor Troicki yesterday: “I heard a rumor, (Novak Djokovic) wants a ‘big name’ as a coach. Honestly, I’m also guessing. I have no information and no idea who it could be. He’ll be looking for a big name with whom he can share experiences.”
This idea makes a lot of sense for several reasons. Djokovic needs a change of energy and ideas as he enters his 22nd pro season (he turned pro back in 2003). This year Djokovic did not win a Grand Slam title but he did win the Olympic gold medal. The presence of a distinguished coach/ex Grand Slam champion on his team would absorb some of the excessive media attention that always follows Djokovic.
Djokovic has not had a top notch coach in his corner since Goran Ivanisevic departed about a year ago.
It’s understandable why Djokovic would seek the presence of another super coach. Another Grand Slam champion legend in his corner would be thrilling and invigorating and inspiring. It would also be educational – as every tennis wizard is a unique animal with his or her own original concepts and secrets.
A few ideas come to mind immediately, the first choice would be Pete Sampras who was one of young Novak’s first tennis heroes. Sampras has largely stayed out of the public eye since retiring in 2003 but he did state in one rarely discussed CNN TV interview from years ago that he does have some interest in coaching the right player in the right situation.
Another option is Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the former Russian superstar, who won two Grand Slam titles, Olympic gold, Davis Cup and was no. 1 in the world. Kafelnikov may or may not be interested to return to tennis but surely he possesses a vast knowledge of the game which would help any player if requested.
Marat Safin is another super champion who has publicly stated that he would be interested to coach any player but oddly, no player has taken advantage of the offer.
Other possibilities: Jim Courier, Thomas Johansson, Andy Murray, Marcelo Rios, John McEnroe, Patrick Mouratoglou.
Novak Djokovic · Pete Sampras · Yevgeny Kafelnikov

Or Ljubicic, Seles, Guga?

Andy Murray would be an interesting and surprise hire. He’s a master of tactics and they would probably have a good time together for Djokovic’s last years.

Steve, it makes sense and they did play doubles together at Miami Open once, about ten years ago, they lost 1R, I was there, but I don’t know if their chemistry is strong enough together to do business. But it wouldn’t be a shock if Murray gets the call.
