AO Day 3 Observations

Taylor Fritz annihilated Jenson Brooksby easily in three sets, the man he lost to at US Open a few years ago. Brooksby changed his serve but looked ordinary from baseline, lacking his old pop to hurt Fritz. Hard to tell if Fritz got so much better or Brooksby lost power.

Eva Lys lucky losered into main draw when Kalinskaya dropped out and beat Katie Birrell 6262. I think it’s her first Grand Slam main draw win. The German just signed with Evolve agency.

Corentin Moutet is a blend of Marcelo Rios talent shotmaking and Lleyton Hewitt fire. A joy to watch. He mastered Popyrin in four dynamic sets.

Ben Shelton utilized his fire and emotional adrenaline advantages to rout the robotic Brandon Nakashima in three tough sets.

17 yr old Iva Jovic won her second first round Grand Slam match in a row and looks like a future champion. The Californian also won as a wildcard at US Open last year vs Magda Linette.

Joao Fonseca blitzing Andrey Rublev might be the most stunning Grand Slam debut since… I can’t even remember… Federer vs Sampras?

Nishesh Basavareddy is the new sensation but he lost both ATP Challenger matches last year to Learner Tien, a semi and final. Tien won yesterday in five sets vs Ugo Carbelli.

Lorenzo Musetti from Nike to Asics. Moutet from Asics to Celio. Popyrin from Fila to a new mystery brand with a rabbit logo. Tiafoe from Nike to Lululemon.

Rooting hard for Fokina right now. So many frustrating matches. Almost breaking through but not yet. Hopefully he can best FAA in 5.

Tonight battle of the great one handers. Shapo vs. Musetti. Slated for 8:30ish PM EST.

shameful how that ump tried to cheat Fokina, time violation warning while he was waiting at line for crowd to quiet at 22 duece. clearly trying to help Felix. but it backfired, Felix was the one who crumbled, didn’t want or need any corruption help.

It was disgusting for the ump to call that in the 5th set. Felix can’t seem to hold any momentum in his career.

    The other Canadian:
I really like how Tipsarevic was coaching Shapo. Physically showing him to stick his chest out and show confidence rather than throwing child-like tantrums over nothing. I fear Tipsy has arrived five years too late for Denis.

I’ve seen them both practice and Musetti is extremely disciplined his approach and works very hard while Denis was giggling through a practice set with Hurkacz. I don’t think Tipsarevic will allow this.
