Another setback but Gauff isn’t worried yet

Coco Gauff lost today in three sets to Belinda Bencic 63 36 46 and was asked if she’s concerned about the disappointing results she’s been having since January in Australia…

Question: “Coco, are you able to pinpoint what the reason is with some of the results of late? I think there is obviously a lot of expectation of where you are, the way you have finished 2024, and start of this year things have not gone according to plan as far as results are concerned. Are you concerned, and are you able to pinpoint reasons for, let’s say for your standard, this bit of a slump?”

Coco Gauff: “I mean, overall I feel like, I mean, it’s not as bad as it seems, I guess. Start of the year, I did well at United Cup and lost to Paula fourth round in Australia. Middle East wasn’t a great swing for me. Here, I mean, I lost 6-4 in the third in the fourth round against a tough opponent who’s coming off a 500 win. Obviously I wanted to do better, want to have better results, but it’s not something I can crush myself on. I’m trying to do better, and that’s all I can do. I’m trying to work on things in practice, and unfortunately right now it’s not translating how l’d like to.”

20 year old Gauff, ranked no. 3 in the world, made the QF at Australian Open (lost to Badosa) but then she lost first round at both Qatar and Dubai, to Kostyuk and Kessler, and now she’s lost in the fourth round at BNP Paribas Open. Gauff defeated the 28 year old Bencic in the AO 4R 57 62 61.
